Hi Karen thanks for that very helpful as I had a leak in my caravan earlier this year, eventually identified the top joint as the culprit. However as I was fearful of removing it I just siliconed around the edges, which seems to have done the trick. However if the problem returns I feel confident after watching the video,that I could do a more substantial repair. After all the work you’ve had done this should extend the life of your home and money well spent Cheers Paul
@danuk20056 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't really use silicone (the stuff used in bathrooms) on a caravan. You need a non setting sealant.

Travelling K that white extra tacky stuff that would have been on the seam trim. It’s designed to stay tacky all its life. Or certainly a long time. It’s when it goes hard that it stops being effective. Caravans are constantly expanding contracting and flexing with heat, difference in materials and road bumps and hence the “goo” used to keep them together and seal the joins needs to be and remain as flexible as possible. It can be bought on a roll, and that’s what’s used on awning rail, window hinges, seams etc
@TravellingK6 жыл бұрын
Ah ha! Ok. Bought on a roll? Do you have a link to some?

@CazPea6 жыл бұрын
Ha Ha, probably. Gotta keeps us Brits in work some how 😉 In truth, it’s more likely just a sign of the times, that was made in 60’s, I think ???? Thank you🌈
@TravellingK6 жыл бұрын
I think the caravan's doing well for living in it permanently and having a tyre blow-out. I think because they are built to be so light, there will be maintenance over time. But I'm still glad I went with the UK caravan 😀
@Runrig64innz6 жыл бұрын
NZ roads are hard on UK caravans. So far in my researching of caravans for my 2019 purchase I can see a dramatic diferrence in the weight between Aussie, NZ & UK caravans. I will look closely at water tightness. My Dad always said as a builder, the new methods had too much reliance on sealants instead of physical barriers to water @@TravellingK
@TravellingK6 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting observation by your dad! I was surprised that the awning rail was so important for water prevention! Will be interested to know what you find out from your research.
