Ive never seen moissanite before and I dont even know much about it so I decided to buy one!
I have mixed feelings about it. Im actually quite impressed with the stone but I dont like how its being created and marketed as a direct alternative to diamond.
Im blessed to have only ever worked with top quality diamonds through out my career (D,E,F colour GIA certified diamonds as a norm) and this stone simply is no where near as special as a D colour, vvs1, triple excellent diamond that it is pretending to be.

Moissanite is graded very similarly becuase they are similar in composition... they are NOT being advertised as diamonds. They are NOT fake diamonds.... Clearly you are very bothered and biased. They were discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan in a meteorite. A natrual moissanite btw its far more precious than a diamond every could be, however they only occur in small amounts. Luckily they found a way to replicate them and are affordable. 😉 A moissanite has a refractive index of 2.691 whike a diamond has has refractive index of 2.417 and gives off a rainbow 🌈 light while diamonds tend to give of a white refractive color. Moissanite also has more fire than diamonds .. if anything just watch the video by Charles and Colavrd the company who first patented moissanite

So am I correct in saying, Moissanite is "Man Made" & Lab Grown Diamonds are "Man Made?" Please correct me if I am wrong, but I have read several studies that claim Lab Grown Diamonds are "Real Diamonds", how can this be if it is man made? sure it's not a fake diamond, but isn't a real gemstone either... the very most of all moissanite on the market is lab grown, since natural moissanite is extremely rare. Guess that's what's making the common judgement of it being fake, or a simulant, which if we think about just a little more criticly just makes sense on a commercial level, not substantially

You’re almost correct. But none of the moissanite you can buy is natural. It’s so incredibly rare in nature that to get the stone to consumers, it has to be made in a lab. Personally, I have no problem with lab stones. I love that we have the capacity to make gems.

They’re chemically identical to their naturally formed counterparts and they tend to cost a lot less. This means that you can get a whole lot more bang for your buck. And generally, lab stones are more perfect. Fewer flaws/inclusions.

I was a pawnbroker so I heard about them because they test as diamond and we didn't want to lose our money. (I have never seen one though because they weren't common back then) As a guy who sits at the bench why would he know about them? He worked in a high end gaff that wouldn't go near such things.

There’s a video of a diamond, moissanite and 2 cz all being heated at a high temperature, the diamond was the only one that was completely ruined and turned cloudy. The moissanite did turn back into its original color which is yellow but was still very shiny and reflected light.

This video comes off as kinda pretentious, moissanite is it’s own stone, it’s hardly trying to be a diamond. Just because they are two predominantly colorless stones that are popular in jewelry doesn’t mean one is trying to copy the other. That’d be like saying white sapphire is trying to be a diamond. Diamond people are so strange, they constantly feel threatened by strange things that wouldn’t change the diamond trade if diamonds are so “rare” and “special.” It’s because they know they’re not special, they’re just overpriced pieces of carbon. It’s okay if you like those overpriced pieces of carbon (I do too), but stop trying to make them something they are not and stop acting like you’re better than someone because you have one, it’s intrinsically worthless. We add value to the stones in our engagement rings, whether it’s a ruby, an emerald, a sapphire, a moissanite, etc. They’re all equally beautiful. I have a diamond engagement ring myself, I’m just not an asshole about it.

Brilliantly well said. I found his video condescending, he’s a jeweller who’s never heard of Moissanite? Yet Moissanite has been available for a least 20+ years! Every one who knows what Moissanite is knows it’s it’s own jewel which just so happens to look similar to a diamond. I’d never buy a diamond not because of any ethical reason but because they are way way over priced for what they are making jewellers very rich, diamonds are no longer an investment because unless you know exactly what you are buying and understand diamond gradings which most consumers don’t your going to be 100% ripped off.

A diamond is single refractive whilst a moissanite is double refractive. Labelling a moissanite as a fake diamond is the same as labelling a spinel as a fake sapphire. All moissanite in the jewelry market is synthetic (lab grown) and not natural. It has been found in nature but those specimens are extremely rare and you'll never see one in jewelry.

Some corrections there. There is natural Diamond & lab created Diamond, both of these are structurally the same. Moissanite is made from Silicon Carbide. Natural silicone carbide is rare, I own some and it tests positive for diamond. It looks like grey lava covered in glitter and is ejected from meteorite craters.

I first heard about moissanite when I was studing for my geology bachelor's degree. I never understood why it got so conflated with the diamond market, since it has such different mineral properties. It has a higher refractive index than diamond (that's why it has more "fire" or looks "fake" to some people), but honestly I like that about it! It disturbs me how many people try to cut moissanites to be less brilliant just so they seem more diamond-like. I think they should be treasured as a super cool gemstone in their own right and not some diamond substitute!

I love moissanite. I didn't for many years because it was more yellow but they've perfected it to a clear sparkly stone. It is my go to choice now. I love diamonds but even DeBeers said that diamonds are innately worthless. The value is the marketing of love emotion and memory that is attached. DeBeers has had the market cornered for YEARS. If I can purchase a beautiful, more sparkly stone for 75%+ less than a diamond but just as hard, why not? Its not like you can sell a diamond back for what you purchased it for.🤷🏽‍♀️

Real diamonds are basically a ripoff anyways, so moissanite is an amazingly good alternative. Buying a brand new expensive diamond wont even resell for the same price a decade later, it'll be less valuable most likely..."real" mined diamonds arent a good investment and there's been market manipulation around real diamonds forever now. Also, once lab made diamonds became a reality it made genuine mined diamonds even less valuable. You cant make gold and silver in a lab yet, and thats why the precious metals are still such an awesome store of value. Awesome video! I enjoyed watching you work through analyzing the stone. Thanks for sharing your skills, I have set two mossanite stones both certificated, I and the client were really pleased with the finish and that the stone seemed to have a greater fire than a diamond. Diamonds are fine if the client has the money to buy, but this is a very good alternative.

I got a Charles and Colvard forever one 10x8 oval for my soon to be wife (to be married in 3 days) ring. It was her choice to go moissanite. I made the setting after watching your, and countless other, videos. Im just starting in this adventure with the purpose to make her a ring. Silver setting, 2mm white sapphires in under halo and band. Turned out a lot better than i had hoped. The stone is awesome. You're right, you can tell it's not the same as diamond, but it is brilliant in full sunlight. Very bright, and lots of fire. Doesnt have the weight of a diamond, but doesnt feel cheap like a cz. Also, not being $80,000 helps.

Is it a viable alternative to diamonds? Of course it is! I personally hate that the diamond industry has really fabricated pricing and created a myth that ONLY a diamond is a worthy expression of love. The moissanite industry creates beautiful stones and jewelry that will last a lifetime, without breaking the bank. I have both diamonds and moissanite and can honestly say, I will never buy another diamond again, in fact I may sell my diamonds and just keep my moissies.

I made my husband buy me a Moissanite ring to replace the family heirloom he proposed to me with. He custom made it to look like my grandmother's ring. His family heirloom, which is a monstrosity, an absolutely hideous rose cut monster sits in the safe. I wear my Moissanite ring (2.8 karat, OMC) every day & get tons of compliments. Also, many people prefer Moissanite or lab-created diamonds due to environmental factors & human factors. Smart to add a line into your business!

I find your language throughout this video kind of annoying. Moissanite is its own stone and is being sold as such - You, as a professional, should treat it as an independent stone. You called it “fake diamond,” “space/meteorite diamond” several times and in doing so are perpetuating the idea that someone might try to pass this off as a diamond. It is sold as it's own independent stone in many places, including where ever you got yours from. Yes this certificate is copying the look of a diamond certificate but that does make a bit of sense as it is sold as a diamond alternative. People considering the two may ask for these details. Also, the paperwork does make it clear that this isn’t a diamond. To your point, because all moissanite that is sold in the jewellery trade is man-made and, as far as I know, internally flawless, it does seem a bit arbitrary to include those ratings on a certificate since the grade is the same for all stones. I had hoped that you, as a professional, would have given a more objective description of this stone. Talk about it’s dispersion, refractive index, and lustre. You boasted that you have worked with amazing diamonds and yet you couldn’t tell us what made this different - “there’s just something off about it” isn’t a good enough take from a professional - a layman could have said that.

So I wonder if he actually made a ring for it. I personally prefer moissanite over a diamond. Not just because it’s cheaper, but I just think it’s more gorgeous than a diamond. I already have 3 rings with moissanites as their center stone. One round and one emerald cut. Had to use real diamonds on the sides since they don’t make small moissanites yet.

It took them awhile to prefect it as itself. Because it took awhile to figure out how to replicate a gem that came from outer space...Yeah "Ohhh a space stone". They're gorgeous! Better than a blood diamond. It should have its own certification. It shouldn't be touted as a diamond. It's lovely on its own.

Synthetic stones ARE real stones. Also no they aren't trying to pass it off as a diamond. On the certificate, really big you can see that it says moissanite twice. There are certificates like this for other expensive gemstones like rubies, emeralds, sapphires... also try telling apart one moissanite in between 10 other diamonds the same size. I dont care how many years experience you have, you won't be able to tell which is the diamond. This is why they have equipment to tell them them apart. Once you need all this complicated setup just to figure out which is which, dont you think it lowers the value of diamonds? I think this is what makes so many people angry about moisanites. Kind of what happened to African Amethyst after brazilian amethyst was found. Both real stones but Amethyst is no longer considered a precious stone like it used to be because it is so common now.

I've been wearing my 1.5 ct Moissanite earrings for the last 18 years, so I'm baffled that you just recently learned about it. Back in '04, '05, '06 when I'd walk into a jewelry store, I'd get 'those are gorgeous diamond earrings'... I was (and am) proud to say 'they're Moissanite, not diamond'. They always offered to clean them for me so they could take a closer look. Moissanite is a gorgeous gem in its own right.

You sound like you are biased against it before you actually looked at the Moissanite. Which I guess is a fair reaction, but I was hoping to learn more about the differences. Objective language is helpful as opposed to asking Siri like "what the hell is a moissanite?" I believe it should be looked at with objectivity and talked about as a separate stone, of its own merits and faults. The GRA copying GIA is a good start for interesting information, but that's how it is marketed by sneaky people and through no fault of the stone itself. Perhaps a comparison to show people the differences and why it justifies the price difference will be useful to laypeople like myself trying to learn more

I remember one time at a high end auction show with my dad looking at an entire case of huge beautiful diamonds that I could no way afford. For some reason I couldn't take my eyes off one of them. We checked the catalogue and turned out that it wasn't the biggest, clearest or best color of the crowd but it was cut perfectly (SUWA brand). That's when I realized how important cutting was to a diamond and that experience stuck with me.

I got an engagement ring with moissannite and I love it. We agreed on it with my partner because it ment I could have a more interesting/elaborate design (price wise) and I felt it was more ethical. It shimmers so much more than my friends diamond ring too. I love it so so much and 10/10 would do again. Tho I think unfortunately you need to have a thick skin to have it as an engagement ring because there are a lot of ppl who act like it's a fake and refuse to understand that it is it's own stone separate from a diamond. So if appearances are important to you be mindful it can make for some awkward conversations. Otherwise like I said it's super beautiful

I've got a few diamond rings. Firstly a moissanite is a gem in its own right. The second hardest stone after a diamond. When my fiancé proposed I was adamant that I didn't want a diamond, only a moissanite. I'd treated myself to a couple. We'd both been married twice before (to other people) and on my 50th birthday he proposed. Now, had I been younger, I would not have minded. But at this age I felt a diamond would be a waste of money and I'd preferred to put the difference towards our pension trust. The shine is so beautiful, I actually prefer them to diamonds. The prices are great and anyone who cannot afford a diamond will not be disappointed with a moissanite. Cubic zirconia get dull after a few weeks. But my moissy is as shiny as it was when he put it in my finger. People need to realise that not everyone can afford a diamond. I love them. And those jewellers who laughed. Shame on them. Moissanites are slowly taking over.

I have several moissanite rings. I love all of them. They're beautiful and I can wear them everyday without worrying about damaging them. I don't buy jewelry as an investment. That's a quick way to go broke. Just like cars jewelry looses value them moment you buy it. I don't buy moissanite as a diamond "alternative". I buy moissanite because I prefer it over diamonds.

I don't think double refraction is the word you were looking for to describe the way a diamond handles light. Moissanite is doubly refractive ie birefringent, diamond is not. It's a Moissanite, not a diamond. I like it for its own characteristics. I have a nice diamond which I enjoy very much but I also enjoy the space stone.

Moissanite and diamonds are graded the same the only thing that’s different is that moissanite is not graded in cut. They are graded differently for cut. So basically 3 Cs instead of 4 Cs. Moissanite isn’t fake. It’s real and can be found in nature. It’s just more rare than a diamond because moissanite that is found in nature is to small to make into a gemstone so it’s lab made. And it does have more refraction than a diamond 2x more fire.

I would like to see a video review of the Charles and Colvard forever one (DEF) colorless moissanite. The original producer of moissanite. I have owned a Charles and Colvard 1.5 round moissanite set in 14k yellow gold for over 10 years now and still counting. It's as beautiful as the day I received it. I still received compliments today. To clean it, I use a colorless mild liquid soap, warm water, and a soft baby toothbrush at least once a week most of the time more or less. The moissanite has its own category. Like all other precious and semi-precious gemstones. I welcomed the newcomer. I enjoyed your video.

To me, like diamond, a moissanite is also a durable long term stone, unlike zirconia, that may scratch more easily. It is not pretending to be a diamond, it's another durable stone. It's synthetic, not fake.

That's not what double refraction is. You're thinking of dispersion, which is what gives it the colors. Double refraction is actually a terrible thing for Moissanite, because every internal reflection is doubled, making it blurry, versus diamond, which is singly refractive

Moissanites are very beautiful, and I certainly understand why people like them. But I prefer the white fire of diamonds to the rainbow fire of moissanites, so my little 30 point diamond pleases me very much, more than a larger moissanite would. And I think lab-created diamonds are fantastic, because they cost less and they are conflict-free. To each their own!

I just discovered Moissanite, and I have fallen head over heels in love with it - IMO it is more beautiful than a Diamond. As far as I am concerned, Moissanite is a Gem unto itself. As I am Retired my Diamond buying days are over, lol and Moissanite allows me to have beautiful, sparkly Stone jewelry without the prohibitive cost of Diamonds. I am glad to have an ethical and affordable alternative to Diamond and a durable and stable alternative to Cubic Zirconia. Moissanite is a dream come true.

I have a beautiful gold ring with moissanite and I love it! I think the diamonds sellers are worried to loose customer because of moissanite and are degrading it as much as they can.....but it will be a lost battle. I do not care about the reselling value I do not wish to sell it being them diamonds or moissanites I like the sparkles and the affordability of moissanite compared to diamond. :)

I would LOVE to see what you make with this moisonite! Another selling point to this stone is the mining process of diamonds and how horrible it is not only for the earth but also the health of the miner. I personally would prefer a moisonite because of these reasons alone. I would absolutely LOVE to have my bridal rings to be made of moisonite set in sterling. Thank you for sharing this with us. I really enjoyed this video but do agree it would be nice if they would create their own style certification! I think the replication of the proper GIA certificate makes the stone seem more counterfeit and thats unfortunate for such a beautiful stone.

You should try to burn it! its pretty cool! you wont ruin it! it will turn super bright yellow, then once it cools it fades back to its original color. this is how moissanite is more durable than a diamond. also the silica encapsulates the carbon so it wont loose its size over time like diamonds.

I got a moissonite ring from a brand called Imolove. Two jewelers tested it and it tested positive for moissonite. The mystery is that it doesn't seem to be doubly refractive. It’s not fake! 😂 Mohs scale a diamond is a 10 and Moissanite is a 9.25 to 9.5 depending on the stone so, very close and both very durable For fire a diamond is 0.044 and a moissanite is 0.104, for Brilliance a diamond is 2.42 and moissanite is 2.65 to 2.69 And then adding in the ethical side and rarity Moissanite is a definite winner in my personal opinion. But, to each his own

I have a family piece that my grandad bought in Pretoria SA in 1920. It's an old mine cut 1.9 carats set in a vintage rose gold ring. It was costing a fortune to insure. 5 months ago I found a supplier who got me an old mine cut moissanite with a F rating (just like mine). Had my jeweller recreate the setting and put the original in the safe. Side by side in the same setting I can't see a difference (untrained eye maybe but I have been wearing the original for 30 years). The old mine cut makes it look realistic 😮

I Absolutely Love Moissanite gem stones… they are very strong and look even better than diamonds!! Over the years I’ve had diamond rings.. Diamonds are nice but Moissanite is just stunning and very durable can also cut Glass. You can also get them in any color.
