Professional Spot Welds From a DIY Kit?

I've been fixing battery packs for a while, the Kweld DIY spot welder kit will help eliminate my need to solder the batteries in, saving me from damaging the new replacement cells. I had been looking at a spot welder for a while but the price was just too much for a decent unit. I think the Kweld solves this, not only is it an extremely powerful portable unit, it's priced really well for what you get. I used my 3d printer to make the case, and some battery clamps I had laying around to make it quick connect and portable.

Must be nerding out hard here, I'm still way to excited about how good this little spot welder works. Better yet, you'll get to see me fail hard and hopefully recover from it working on a dyson v10 battery.

i just get my self a kweld.. :D did u print the top part with face up or down? does it need support?

Face down, I did use supports.

I used once with capacitor bank .now I turn on and can't calibrate 🤯 overcurrent 🤯

Obviously followed instructions and a tutorial and re-uploaded. 😐😑 I have a manual calibration mega zero (cheap Chinese ender clone) NEVER had a problem.🤔 Never rely on auto calibration or saved configuration settings! The "wire cutter" is a crimp/stripper/cutter but you say you have no crimp tool? 🤔 A simple twin relay using a capacitor and resistor for setting timing is all that's needed with a MOT and cost is for me so far $2.00 being the relays I've had for year's hence the price

I wish I knew more electronically then I do, I know enough to just get started so I had no choice but to go kit. You're right wire cutters do have crimps, mine is just to small that's it. You should share what you've built! I'm sure there are quite a few people that would like a spot welder that doesn't cost a bunch.

These are unfortunately way overpriced for us in the USA because we are forced to buy them from a Canadian distributor. I can just dispose of and replace batteries rather than repair cells for the waste that the excessive $150-200 extra markup the Canadian distributor is selling them for. If I ever make a trip to Germany I’ll order one delivered to my hotel and get back the vat upon export. From a US consumer standpoint the existing Canada only option is nonsense. Maybe look for a US distributor as that would be better for all. Canada is known to be crazy high on taxes and duties. A US distributor should be able to sell them for your EU price minibus the 19% VAT and still make a profit rather than Canadas EU and VAT price plus $150. So Americans , don’t buy this thing as it’s relying on you being financially stupid.

And in the end, we could probably buy them for 49.99 if they were properly sourced, you're not wrong. I still love my kit, hopefully, someone will do it.

I saw your video recently and thought , hm might be nice to have on hand as my attempt to repair a SEARA NiCad battery was foiled by the lack of such a device about 10 years ago. But my core being refuses to participate in crappy.l business models. Economics is a thing and I can choose not to play. I’ve got no issues paying a reasonable price , but then paying $200 extra just because they want to force me to go through a Canadian distributor is a no go.

Sucks that the couple recent US distributors stopped selling. I know one of them is one of the sources of wisdom on Endless Sphere but he didn’t have the time and I think he was just doing it as a favor temporarily until someone stepped up and then I think Keith had medical issues so now we are stuck with Canada. At this point there are enough boards on Aliexpress that control the timing to choose whatever suits your fancy along with “energy storage boards” aka the heavy copper infused PCB boards you solder your mosfets to. The boards are $25’ish and $10’ish respectively and you can get away with $10 worth of mosfets or spend $20 if you want to use something pricier. Some of the timer boards are a bit more expensive. Then you can do the Lipo route, the Lead Acid/AGM route or capacitor route for power. I’m leaning towards a 2S or 5S 3000F capacitor bank and just having a PSU with some power resistors feeding it. Seems to offer more power than a 3S 5000mAh Lipo unless you parallel a pair of them but the capacitors are 100% safe and will never go bad. I’ve always wondered how much wire gauge plays a role here in the leads. The inventor of the Kweld has gone into detail about 1m round trip being the ideal length for all the leads with the ability to change settings and go up to 1.5m. Are the included leads 8AWG? Just curious if 6 or 4AWG silicone provides an advantage. Obviously 4 will be pretty unwieldy if the probe side is only 9” long

Good information there, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. The cables that came with mine are 8 gauge and they jump went you weld which makes me wonder if a larger wire might be better. Smarter people than me might know.

I wanted to buy one of these, unfortunately in Australia, just the kweld kit is $350 aud plus post from the Australian distributor, way too expensive. And if you want the whole kit with capacitor bank, kweld supply and kweld kit and hp supply is $899 plus postage. When I first researched this unit it was selling at 80 euro for a complete and tested pcb. The bus bars are not even copper anymore

Ouch that's way too much money. Too bad the price is so far up there. Otherwise it would be a lot many more people would get.
