Nice Job! I have one question though: Please tell me where I‘m wrong! If you sand the epoxy filler flush with the board, then apply two layers of fiberglass you should have a small bump where the new patch is right? If you again sand it flush afterwards, don’t you take away all the new fiberglass as it was „on“ the boards shape? Intuitively I would sand the epoxy filler down so that it is a bit „lower“ than the board. This way I won’t sand all the fiberglass of just to get it flush with the rest again.
@tbaart44286 ай бұрын
Yeah you’re right. 👍 U gotta sand the q cell filler and a little bit of the original board down more so that there is enough space for the fiberglass to fill in and not make a bump.

Great video mate, can you do a cracked tail, or particularly a chipped or cracked swallow/twin next time ones in. Always hard to get right so it doesn’t crack again.

good video!! Can I ask a question. What is q-cell? The full name is? And What is its function?
@Plaaggeest19919 ай бұрын
Since nobody ever replied; you use a mixture of resin and q-cell to fill up the part where there is normally foam. You mix it with that to reduce weight as the q-cells can be seen as little “air balloons”. Beside that, using only resin would make it more brittle/less flexible at the place of your repair.

loved the video ! any tips for me always getting air bubbles ? after it cures and i sand it back sometimes theres small holes because there was an air bubble
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
Yeh that’s pretty standard mate. Try using a stick to mix/tap the filler around and release the air bubbles. Or If it’s going to be sprayed over then just fill them with resin at the glassing stage. Alternatively you could just do another fill with the qcell after the first sand. Adds one extra step but it solves the issue.

Great video!! i have a question, why is resin tints preferred over just painting the foam? wouldnt the paint be more consistent than the tint?
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
With ding repairs painting is just as good if not better. And used with a tinted repair can make it look almost perfect. When talking about full boards the resin tint is generally a more richer colour than painting the foam. This is because the foam is porous and you can still see tiny bits of white foam when painting. The resin tint not only colours the foam but soaks into the glass and is in the resin which makes for a deeper / richer colour. Both are good and both are used for different aesthetics. 🤙

Can you use cab-o-sil and Q-cell instead of building a dam with tape?
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
Yeh for sure. The advantage with the tape on the rail is that when you pull it tight along the rail line it keeps the rail shape and leaves you with less sanding to get that radius back.

Did you use lam resin for patch or sanding. Also you applied a hot coat without sanding in the video?
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
Lam resin for patches. Yeh if you can keep it clean enough you dont need to do much prep work before you slap a fill/hot coat on it.
@dmac56782 жыл бұрын
@@Shrednaught awesome thanks for the super quick response. I only have solarez uv polyester sanding resin, so I assume I sand the lamination slightly and then hotcoat and then sand. Sometimes the repair is above the rest of the board but is smooth.
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
That solarez is good for small dings or quick fixes but if it is a significant ding try and get your hands on just straight up lam resin. The sanding resin has a wax in it that could cause delaminates. Yup you got it mate. If it’s slightly raised that’s fine. As long as it’s water tight you’re laughing 🤙

You ever get issues with fisheyes in epoxy hot coats? I seem to always get them no matter how well I clean...
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
Yeh it’s common. Choice of epoxy can change things. Also what are you cleaning with? You need to make extra sure with epoxy that it’s all sanded back and you’re not putting it on top of the original surfboard surface.
@andrew13212 жыл бұрын
@@Shrednaught i've been using acetone to clean the surface with a paper towel. i think i shoudl probably sand down a little more aggressively!
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
Generally you shouldn’t use acetone and epoxy mate. If you do need to use a cleaner with epoxy you should use isopropyl alcohol ( I think I spelled that correctly ) or just warm soapy water / compressed air. When I use epoxy I’ll do the lam then sand it , blow the dust off and then do my fill coat. Just use gloves all at times as the oils from your hands can also cause issues 🤙
