You might well be working class and badly educated, but the latter is often a problem with the system. But you cannot be a dunce if you find physics etc interesting. Loving finding out about stuff is. In my opinion, a sign of intelligence. People who wear a badge of ignorance with pride bemuse me. I am also working class but well educated, much if it from my parents and private reading as well as a few good teachers along the way. I am now old, have achieved no high social status but have met lots of interesting people on the various courses ive done over the years from night school basic archaeology to professional nursing, from night school silver smithing to a foundation degree in horticulture ....etc. now living in Spain and involved with a local language exchange group so have learned a lot about languages. Many of my friends over the years have been self educated as well. They are the people one enjoys spending time with.

I've been watching quite a lot of professor Al-Khalili's popular lectures on KZbin and have been captivated ever since. I’m 57 too, and I was very interested in science as a kid, I always wanted to know “why”, “how” etc. When I left school I studied Chemical Engineering for a year at University, but I didn’t like the career prospects (designing chemical factories basically) so switched to a general science degree and specialised in Biochemistry. I’ve always wanted to know how life began, what is the point of us etc. Unfortunately I grew up pretty poor so I had a motivation to do well financially, personal computers were on the rise and I could see there would be big money for experts. So I switched and got an entry level job as a Computer Programmer, which I was very successful at, ended up managing massive multi million dollar software projects. But I always wonder how things might have turned out if I’d followed my passion instead of money. In the last few years I’ve bought all the school and University textbooks and home taught myself. Can’t get a job doing it, but my point is science is not about having a job, it’s about satisfying the itch in my brain that wants to know how the universe works.

Great stuff! Professor Jim Al-Khalili got me, a working class quarry worker into physics and more importantly quantum mechanics. I still have no idea what's going on but I know I love it passionately. I get glimpses of what it all means. My kids have picked up on my enthusiasm. So much so that my 9-year-old came back from our local library with a book about physics aimed at his age group and he can't put it down.

Thank goodness for scientists like Cox and al-Khalili who take the time to explain things to the general public. It is this public, after all, who pay for CERN, the space telescopes, the LIGO and all the other very expensive paraphernalia of scientific research. They need and want to be educated to the limits of their understanding and share in the wonder that you find the natural world. It is certainly important to stir the fires of imagination and curiosity in the next generation of physicists.

I also caught Brians brilliant remark about how he has been studying Newton, that Newton made the assumption that there is absolute time, which was later rendered false by relativity. But for Newton to have the insight to be careful enough to make sure to establish it first as an assumption is of course brilliant but also Brians recognition of that has really doubled my respect for Brian as a thinker.

Prof BRIAN COX ON LIFE FALSIFIES THE BIG BANG 1. When speaking of the chance origin of life Prof Brian Cox said the following 2. _"All it takes is a system far from equilibrium with a flow of energy and a spark"_ 3. What he did not say was what he actually meant by _"far from equilibrium"_ 4. What he meant by "spark" is a random improbable event favouring a molecular replicator 5. But _"far from equilibrium"_ in thermodynamics means in a state of *ORDER* 6. That is from one state of *thermodynamic order* some energy may be directed to create more *order* 7. Directed energy in thermodynamics is called *work* but its creation is inefficient producing heat 8. Therefore the former state of order is always greater than the latter state of order it may create 9. That means the work which created the former state of order must have come from a higher state of order still 10. Such a regression must stop at an original state of maximum order consistent with a creation and the second law 11. The Big Bang creates a state of *HIGH DISORDER* as indicated by the smoothness of the CMBR (equilibrium) 12. The Big Bang is falsified as a violation of the second law of thermodynamics. Q.E.D.

You can have confidence in Science. You can have faith in God. And because of the bell curve and freedom of belief you can actually be both. This is an option and no negative judgment or connotation to that opinion.

Far from 'Standing on the shoulders of giants', modern 'big bang' supporters are dancing on their graves.. "What we observe is not nature in itself but nature exposed to our method of questioning" (Werner Heisenberg) "For the time being we have to admit that we do not possess any general theoretical basis for physics which can be regarded as its logical foundation." (Einstein, 1940) "All these fifty years of conscious brooding have brought me no nearer to the answer to the question, 'What are light quanta?' Nowadays every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks he knows it, but he is mistaken. … I consider it quite possible that physics cannot be based on the field concept, i.e., on continuous structures. In that case, nothing remains of my entire castle in the air, gravitation theory included, [and of] the rest of modern physics." (Albert Einstein, 1954) "I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it." (Erwin Schrodinger talking about Quantum Physics) "Some things that satisfy the rules of algebra can be interesting to mathematicians even though they don't always represent a real situation." (Richard P. Feynman) "Mathematics has the completely false reputation of yielding infallible conclusions. Its infallibility is nothing but identity. Two times two is not four, but it is just two times two, and that is what we call four for short. But four is nothing new at all. And thus it goes on and on in its conclusions, except that in the higher formulas the identity fades out of sight." First saw Jim Al Khalili years ago on Bbc tv talking about quantum physics. 1st time I had ever heard of such a thing as well despite being in my 30s. It was fascinating and have watched and listened to more and more science programmes since then. But am afraid that with my other interests I need more than 1 life to fit everything in.
@schmetterling44772 жыл бұрын
You need two years of physics to understand quantum mechanics mathematically. If you listened in high school to the explanations about momentum and angular momentum, then you are almost ready to understand it conceptually. Conceptually it's one of the easiest theories in physics.

There are things we know and things we don't know. If we know what we do know and we know that we can't know what we don't know then we know there are known unknowns. Are known unknowns; (a) possible? (b) impossible? (c) a paradox?
