I don't care what anyone says, this game was the best in the series. Without a shadow of a doubt. The story , oh the story! I am a very story-driven person, stories are my passion, and this game (well, the series as a whole, but ESPECIALLY this game) is just a masterpiece in storytelling. I don't really care about the absurdity of Clive's plot, those final cutscenes were absolutely spectacular. They gave a real danger to the professor's foe - whereas before it was mainly just Layton, Luke and whatever ally they had picked up along the way that was in danger, here there was a whole city about to be destroyed. And the emotion running through the whole thing... I mean, I am a guy and I was 13 when I played the game but I am not ashamed to say I cried. And it wasn't even Layton and his love that made me cry - it was Luke's departure. I knew it was coming, and I thought I would be prepared for it. But I had gone three games seeing the relationship between Luke and Layton and it was perfectly done. And I just couldn't help but feel so sad at the splitting up of two characters I had come to love. It was the end. Professor Layton has become a bit of an inspiration for me. I always strive to be this thing we call a "gentleman" and I will never refuse people in need. In this way, I try to be like Layton. In fact, I have even gone as far as to get a top hat which I wear almost everywhere. That hat has become probably the second most important item I own. It has given me confidence I never knew I had, reminded me that I do have some importance in this world. Had it not been for these games I would not have discovered that I love the sound of violins and most of the music I listen to these days is because of the violins. And Professor Layton's sword fight in the Pandora's Box, pipe-on-sword fight in the Eternal Diva and the scene with him and Randall fencing in the Mask of Miracles were the things that stuck in my mind as I made the decision recently to take up fencing, something which has been fantastic for me in so many ways. Professor Layton is more than just a game to me; it has given me so much over the years, it has changed my life, quite literally. And hearing these tunes once again reminds me of all the things I loved. I still haven't finished the series - I am closing in on the end of the Mask of Miracles. I have been delicately savouring the taste of it, for I fear a life without those games in it. But even when it is finished, I will be left with so much more than just memories of the game. Without these beautiful games, my life would be less than it is, and I can say that with 100% certainty.

***** Then perhaps the genre of platforming simply doesn't appeal to you. I don't recommend you quit gaming for the reason that you did, since there are many other genres with different kinds gameplay that may entertain you.
@BPagan10 жыл бұрын
It's not that it doesn't appeal to me, it is that I just do not have the time needed to "do the job right". I should have been clearer in my post here. As with many in my generation, I started with D and D in the mid seventies and advanced to Game units with Atari and Nintendo. (Tons of quarters.....LOL) It was fun. My last "Computer" adventure would not really be called a "game". Kings Quest version V or VI (can't remember what version) and all the Myst adventures. My daughter took those over and was a wizard at computer games. I loved Super Mario Bros so I would always go back to that series. (Nintendo was my last personal game console I ever owned. Then CPU games started being written and I bowed out to to College and family at that time.) I've looked into online fantasy games recently and I might do that but it really looks like a lot of time to spend in order to really be competitive with other gamers. They would not want someone to be half assed and amateurish when playing these and I would not blame them. I am either working from home on structural engineering projects to earn my living, or using the time necessary to maintain our KZbin Channel. Not enough hours in a day for me. I miss it. But just don't have much extra time to enjoy it. If you have a helpful suggestion or two, I would listen and be grateful for it.gmingdude Megan K.

I got into the Layton series a few years ago after finding my sister’s old copy of Curious Village, and I immediately fell in love with everything about it. The art style was unique and had lots of effort put into it, the story was entertaining while still managing to make me tear up a little at the end, the soundtrack was AMAZING, but to me, the best part was the characters. Each one was easily recognisable, they had humane interactions that really made me believe in their bonds and friendships, especially Layton and Luke, and they all had at least one charming thing about their personalities. I eventually got around to Pandora’s box, and it lived up to my expectations. I also cried more at the ending. But the problem I had with these endings was that they to sudden. They involved characters we only met about half an hour earlier who you never got the chance to know. But then, Lost Future. LOST FRICKING FUTURE!!! I don’t know what they did, but this game completely took all of my love and instantly became my most favourite video game ever. The gameplay was fun, the mystery was more engaging than it had ever been, and OH MY GOD, CLAIRE!!! Unlike Anton and Flora, we actually get to meet her early on in the game, and we get to see how she connects to Hershel (who is literally the most precious being ever in the flashbacks). We clearly see what she’s like, and can start piecing her story together before getting a direct answer. Speaking of, it was heartbreaking having to listen to Hershel explain how Claire died, and how hard he tried to learnt what caused the explosion purely because of his love for Claire, which later got him ASSULTED and HOSPITALISED! I had completely fallen in love with these characters, so to hear how horrible and tragic Hershel's past was physically hurt me. I felt incredibly bad for him. AND THEN YOU LEARN CELESTE WAS REALLY CLAIRE THE WHOLE TIME, AND THAT SHE IS LITERALLY GOING TO DIE WITHIN PROBABLY HALF AN HOUR!!! Seeing Layton cry as Claire kissed him and began walking down the alley felt so gut wrenching to watch, knowing that they were both going to have to deal with her death all over again. But then the title drop and Hershel yelling at Claire and begging for her to stay is what broke me. All Hershel wanted to was to be with Claire again. He couldn’t deal with the memory of her dying in the explosion, and the last thing he wanted was to watch her walk straight into that death and relive it again. Claire knew this, and felt exactly the same, but she knew she couldn’t stay in the present. She knew that there was nothing that would stop her from returning to that day, had already accepted that she couldn’t change her fate. But she also knew she couldn’t let the love of her life behind with even more trauma. All throughout the cutscene, she had a smile on her face. Claire wanted Hershel’s last memory of her to be as the happy-go-lucky girl he had fallen in love with. To be of her smiling one final time. They had so many plans for each other, and Claire had to remind Hershel what their future was. Lost. Unwound. She was the one who had to stop Layton’s denial, and that remind him that he had a different future to peruse without her. And the way Hershel stares in awe and turns away after Claire disappears is enough to make me cry, even without watching the rest of the scene. It’s amazing how even without saying anything, you understand everything he’s going though just from him taking off his hat from Claire for the first time in the series as he cries and stares and the sky. Later, when Luke has to leave, and tells the professor that he’s not a gentleman yet is a different kind of sadness, but still enough to destroy me in every way possible. After playing these games and seeing how much he trusts Hershel, seeing him break down when forced to separate is what really causes me to properly bawl my eyes out. This game will always hold a special place in my heart, and although I have yet to play the final games, I’m confident that they, nor any other game I play in the future will move me as much as this game did. Thank you, Akihiro Hino, for creating these amazing games

MasterQuestMaster I actually though about his a lot, and always come up with the same answers. The grandfather paradox is real, but it never became a problem because we never achieved time travel. We either went extinct before that feat, or we as humans simply can't survive it. The amount of energy needed for such a feat is massive. Another is the multiverse idea where it simply deviates to another time line, making time travel possible, but impossible 2 navigate to specific points (or universe) making it random what timeline we actually appear 2. But the multiverse idea is weird to me because if it were real, someone should have claimed to time traveled already, which leads that we simply can't do it as humans. We are limited by our frailness. But thats what i think, and i have fun thinking about it

I think that games series we like the most are series we saw beginning (and sometimes ending). It's very hard to start a finished game series and go back in time. I played Layton 1 in the end of 2008, then bought every game every time one was out. 1st and 3rd will forever stay in my heart, the 1st for the freshness and the 3rd for its story. 2nd has a nice spot. When one expresses his love for a game or a game series, other people cant understand why one loves it if they havent played the game at the time, let alone if they have a different age. Everyone has a favorite game or game series for truly personal reasons, and everyone is right to love it in their own right.
@greykoepp46249 жыл бұрын
+TheAlamla Yes, I agree. For me, my favorite game series is The Legend of Zelda. But really, I think that Professor Layton means more to me. I was there at the start and I followed through to the end. I experienced them without knowing where the next would lead. It's different. With Zelda, the only games I played without any prior knowledge was Twilight Princess, Spirit Tracks, and Ocarina of Time. All others I knew things about (though no big spoilers thank goodness). Professor Layton was something I got to enjoy in the purest way. So, even though Zelda is my favorite game series, it can't replace to pure experience that was the Professor Layton series, step by step, game by game.

+Akuma Masurao I have been desperately trying to play the Mother games since I learned about Ness from Melee! I could not find English Translations of the triliogy until recently. I am very stoked to play them, especially Mother 3! PS. I got the final boss to Mother 3 spoiled a while ago because I thought I'd never get a chance to play it. Now that I can, is it still worth it?
@AkumaMasurao8 жыл бұрын
Also-friggin-lutely! As far as the finale, it's more emotionally draining if you try it yourself. I'd put forth the theory that even if you watch someone play it before you do yourself (still not recommended) and then beat the game, it's still really hard to get through. Not even counting the finale, the entire game will stick with you long after you finish it. Everything in between makes the game as much as the beginning and end do. I'd go so far as to say it's a perfect game in presentation. It's not my favorite game, but I still consider it perfect.

EVERYONE HANDS DOWN. This is the best theme out of every PL's themes. I remember the first time I got this game I was like 9 or 10 and I loved (still do) to play a game : trying to know about the story just by listening to the main theme of a game or movie, etc... And, damn. I remember I felt so emotional when listening to it, feeling distress, epicness, huge encounters, and I was mainly right (I wasn't expecting to meet PL's dead girlfriend) . Anyway, I damn love this OST.

I'm so sad that Professor Layton's adventures are over... Katrielle's simply don't hit the same, and are more childish imo.
@aheghaugheggeyahg4 жыл бұрын
AlesandroDeMoor totally agree. Unlike Hershel, Katrielle was indeed a bit childish, the LMJ ending wasn’t even satisfying, since we were left with a cliff hanger, and that’s where the anime comes in, bringing an actual satisfying ending.

You’ve probably played it but for other people looking for a fix, Layton Brothers: Mystery Room is good. And Touch Detective is a bit like PL, no traditional puzzles though :(.

I, too, was the same! I was proven just how wrong I was when I watched the trailer and heard this song. It piqued my interest, and I quickly fell in love with the series. So you know just how great this series is, let me tell you: every game besides the first one has made me- and nearly everyone else who has played them- cry... and that's a tough thing for game makers to do, make a game so powerful it messes with the emotions of the players. Now get out there and get those games! ;)

Miracle Mask was my favorite overall. This one's insanely close second if only for the final part of it. Absolutely absurd story, still enjoyed it. Clive was a good villain. The final cutscenes killed my feels. This theme was so, so impactful when Clive nearly died in his fortress. That was the "oh darn, I'm in love with this game" moment for me.

... I've gotta be honest with you all... (Spoilers of every one of the 6 initial games): I didn't cry. I didn't cry when Layton saw Randall die, then seeing him again after 20 years with vengeance, and almost lost him again. I didn't cry when Katia revealed the truth to Anton, her grandfather, all was an illusion and a big missunderstaning, to finally see his already dead Fiancee forgive him from the heavens. Heck, I didn't even cried when all of the protagonists literally sacrificed their lives after learning so many important truths about their family and the most important ancient civilization, and the price of their resurrection being another live; Or when I learned about the actual death of Hershel's girlfriend and other 9 innocents, and the reason why Don Paolo became his arch nemesis. And... neither did I cried when I learned the vilain who almost destroys an entire city for revenge, was someone who Layton already saved in the past, and planned everything to save him again; Or when I knew Claire's time is running out. In fact, not only I didn't cried, but I actually barely felt anything like it during those events, unlike many fans of this series have. But you know what... the Professor Hershel Layton we all know... also didn't cried after all those events... All, except the very last one I mentioned... and on the instant I saw the Professor's eyes, after seeing all of those other things he had to went trough... I didn't cried... But I actually felt... something... ¿empathy maybe? Layton maintained the composure after so many things that happened to him. And on his last adventure, he gains hope again, only to be instantly destroyed... this was his breaking point. But to be honest... crying is actually a very good thing for the soul, even if the events that trigger it are tragedies that should not be repeated, and in some extreme cases (like this), worsened the life of the one who cried. And given that crying is triggered by an emotion, that reinforces that even such a mastermind gentleman like Hershel Layton, is a human just like you, me, your family and friends. But Layton is such a great human, he regained the composure after crying, not only that, but the one person who inevitably and unwillingly caused Hershel to cry, knew him so well she knew he would be fine without her, even if both of them didn't wanted to. As I stated, I didn't cried to this.... but it made me feel something close to empathy. But that isn't the end to this story, because after crying, we have to continue with our lives. And Hershel continued by having to say... not goodbye (I played the Spanish versions so I'm not sure which of all the possible translations of "hasta luego" said) to his young yet loyal friend, reminding him how does a great gentleman act. Now, we need more context.... please don't kill me for this opinion... but I didn't think Luke was a particularly great character (but to be honest, I didn't felt it with anyone of the cast, not even the protagonists... wich might explain why I didn't felt any emotion after all those events), and neither I felt his connection with Layton as strong as everyone on the fandom did... Until on this game, Luke started questioning his friendship, and started to remember how many times Luke risked his own life to save Layton ,which was specially important for this game... and for this dialogue line: "I'm sorry, Layton... but I'm not a true gentleman yet." Or in Spanish "Entonces aún no soy un verdadero caballero." (Then I'm still not a true gentleman.)... When Luke said this, I felt validated with my opinion... and I felt the same emotion when I saw Layton's eyes. Miracle Mask may be my favorite because I felt the story was just a tint bit more interesting during the whole playtrough.... But not only Unwound Future is a very close second (and has a more interesting concept), but the finale was superior to all of the finales of the other games... specially because this two scenes. So far the only other time a story made me feel something similar was the finale of the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. Probably I'm just not a person of highly emotional stories, that, or my brain has a minimum level of quality out of a story... which has not been reached on my 16 and 3/4 years of life.... And I've played Radiant Historia,Final Fantasy Vi and IX, Xenoblade Chronicles, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, and of course, the professor layton games. Seen Death Note,Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball Z, JoJo's Bizzare adventure golden wind, Digimon tamers, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Beastars... And watched The Tale of the bamboo cutter, the entire rocky series, Avengers infinity war and end game, spirited away, Hachiko (so far the only movie that truly made me cry), princess mononoke, and many of Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks's movies. Yet I'm still not as delighted with a Story as many people have, even when I learned to get my expectations low, I'm always disappointed, even if it's just a tiny bit, by many that are considered masterpieces. But somehow, the music of all these products always amazes me, and ends up being more important for my life than the actual journeys themselves.

i have been listening to this song for the past three days. When i am doing something, it pops into my head and i have the urge to listen to it again.
