@@2fast2block I'm pretty sure he didn't say that. We don't know how the universe came into existence and as a scientist, he would never claim he has the definite answer. But the possible answer 'literally nothing' is still way more acceptable than 'god did it', or it is at least much more interesting and thought-provoking than just giving some god the credit.

@@selfdex "I'm pretty sure he didn't say that" Why would you be pretty sure? It's because that would be a very stupid thing to say, wouldn't it? Yet look how you go to his defense. If you're "pretty sure" then what are you sure about? "We don't know how the universe came into existence and as a scientist, he would never claim he has the definite answer." And what if he did? What would that change about how you think of him? "But the possible answer 'literally nothing' is still way more acceptable than 'god did it" Wow, so to you it's more logical that "literally nothing" did it than a supernatural God creating it. How is that more logical? Does "literally nothing" show it's more capable of doing something? Of course it does not to a logical thinking person. What does that say about you? "or it is at least much more interesting and thought-provoking than just giving some god the credit." Great, so what runs through your mind that will continue to speculate how "literally nothing" can not only do something, it can create the universe. I'd dwell on it in less than a second knowing nothing can't do anything. But not to you so please give how you would dwell on that as "much more interesting and thought-provoking". That shows me you really do think that there are possibilities of "literally nothing" doing something even though it takes so little to see that's absurd but not to you. God is less of a chance in doing such a creation. You sure are coming across as not very bright.
@selfdex

@@2fast2block I find it interesting that you rather think about what i say says about me rather than think about what i actually meant. The idea that we don't have an answer (saying 'nothing created the universe' is just a posibility) makes us look for the 'right' answer. Saying 'god did it' implies that the question about how the universe came into existence is a settled question, wich it is most definetly not. Giving a god the credit for various things we don't for certain know (religious fundamentalist go even further by saying 'god did it' to things we do know the answer of) makes us not question and think about those things anymore, wich seriously limits human knowledge. I genuinly hope you don't reply anymore (by saying this, you probably will reply) because i don't think a reasonable discussion is an option.

@@selfdex A well thought-out and well written description of 1/3 of what I call the three problems with most religious dogma. #2. The concepts of forgiveness of sin, divine response to prayer, and all-powerful deity, tend to erode the requirement to take personal responsibility for our actions and outcomes. #3. The concept of life after death erodes the requirement to live every day to the fullest, and to connect closely to the people you love. I cherish every second I spent with my Dad before he died...would I have done that if I believed I would have an unlimited amount of time with him later? Keep on spreading clarity of thought. Be at peace. 😊

My favorite part of this well-known clip isn't the facts Dawkins presents, although he's entirely correct that science isn't circular because the results speak for themselves. It isn't the way Dawkins lays it out with a figurative mic drop at the end, although it's funny and memorable. It's the fact that Dawkins is clearly not out of touch. So many apologists and other idiots of his age and in a similar place as him would act like it's still the 1850s, and not just because religious people are always *at least* that far out of date on their understanding of reality. So many churches try to seem cool by embracing 20 year old fashions, wearing their baseball caps sideways, and rapping like anyone but the 80 year olds in their parish know what rap is anymore. Dawkins isn't some stuffy old retiree who doesn't get it. It's a funny and endearing clip, and for that reason I've always liked it. It would've been so easy for his response to be boring and his attempt to spice it up be forced and eye-roll-inducing. So many religious bobbleheaded mouthpieces for ignorance would've come in carrying a skateboard and saying "Word to your... uh... mother? Am I saying that right?".

To think throughout my entire online life, I worshiped that very statement but a little while ago my life has had a complete turn of events once I realized (not just knew, but seriously understood) that science and morality are two completely different domains that want to be together, the bridge between the gaps isn't through a rational and logical perspective. The scientific method works, it's a tool that allows things to actuate but the choices that govern the operation is fundamentally a moral dilemma. As soon as one forgoes the rationalization that only religion makes good people do evil things, the realization is that axiomatic systems create hierarchies, hierarchies create borders, borders create wars. This could be external or internal of the conscious mind but what these axiomatic systems are trying to figure out is what is considered GOOD. A good person isn't determined by what they know or what they own, a good person is determined by how one acts in the world. If science works based on the actions of things within society then religious axiomatic systems work based on the actions of people within society. The bridge itself is the biological explanation for how we act in the world psychologically and how that connects neurologically and I know the bridge itself and gave up the idea that religion is purely a bad thing, rather it's the complete opposite, religion brings out what is most meaningful in people through the use of transcendent ideas, corruption and chaos because of religion is because the human condition is finite and the choices people will make may never be truly towards a transcendent idea. Thus we have rules and rituals, stories that guide us through life, never to be taken literally but rather interpreted through focusing on something that I'd call the spirit of the good. We eventually call upon transcendent absolutes in all of our actions when we seriously try to think about what the best choice could be in a given situation knowing one is imperfect.

Right now you are using a computer based upon scientific principles. The Pentium D (Smithfield) has 228 million transistors, and that's just one component in a computer. All possible because of science andengineering. Your computer can run all sorts of software from games to displaying youtube videos, from accountancy packages to word processors. The most advanced calculating device religion has *ever* produced is the rosary. All it can do is count. It's not even as useful as the non-religious abacus.

Maybe us atheist need to take part in church monopoly. Halfway house etc. Almost only a church thing. Helping people ain’t a Devine thing it’s a human thing. Being a good human isn’t = not punching one, that’s helping and carrying . I need to admit It works for believers to be able to achieve “cheap” points ( helping others,ain’t a Devine thing, it’ for sure a human thing, but we need to challenge believers on a full scale . Not only on the academic side.

We (all men) must never remain a slave to our own many dishonest and immoral thoughts of “Temptation” - The evil one within us; also called Satan, the Devil and Lucifer, etc. This is everything which has changed us (post puberty and adolescence) from being that young innocent and harmless child of whom we all once were: - When the true Spirit of God has sent us Immanuel, the anointed one, also called Jesus: - He is the true prophet and the chosen Son of man, already sent to teach us how to rise above the evil one within us. So watch out for all the fake prophets; all the men who teach Christianity and all other religions: - We must always pray and live by the true teaching of only Jesus alone… “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, however evil his inclinations may be from his youth upwards.” - (Genesis 8: 21) - “If you have ears to hear; then hear.” - (Mark 4: 9) - “Beware of false prophets; men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (Matthew 7: 15-16) - “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (John 4: 24) - “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) - “The teaching that I give is not my own; it is the teaching of him who sent me. Whoever has the will to do the will of God shall know whether my teaching comes from him or is merely my own.” - (John 7: 16-17) - “The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 10) - “Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…” - (Matthew 24: 4) - “Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” - (Matthew 24: 11-14) - “I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) - “When you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard. Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him. This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven, Give us today our daily bread, And forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us. And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Matthew 6: 6-15) - “Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) - “Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) - “Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 12-14) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe.” - (John 10: 9) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “Someone said to him, ‘your mother and brothers are here outside; they want to speak to you.’ Jesus turned to the man who brought the message, and said, ‘Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?’ and pointing to the disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, my sister, my mother.’” - (Matthew 12: 47-50) - “The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, It would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) - “An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) - “There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) - "Stay awake, and pray that you may be spared the test: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." - (Matthew 26: 41) - “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. And be assured, I am with you always, to the end of time.” - (Matthew 28: 20) - “One of the criminals who hung there also mocked and taunted him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself, and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God? You are under the same sentence as he. For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) - “For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) - Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, Thursday the 10th of January, 2019: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) will always count and can be a new beginning for any one of us. Let it always be you…

The children of this world must always pray to God (alone, in the secret place) and therefore live their lives always in the way that only Jesus alone teaches: - Where they will be safe and well away from all the many priests and preachers of Christianity (and also the preachers of all religions) who are all the many fake prophets that Jesus, in the name of Immanuel (the anointed one) has already warned us against. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “Someone said, ‘your mother and brothers are here outside; they want to speak to you.’ Jesus turned to the man who brought the message, and said, ‘Who is my mother? For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) - “For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) - Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, Saturday the 9th of February, 2019: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us. Much as I love Dawkins, I don't really see why he feels the need to emulate a gangster/rapper-style in this answer. This may be funny to some , however I feel it degrades Dawkins to give unnecessary credit to the already inflated ego of a segment of the population that could, ironically, never really understand the depth of the scientific method.

Seems like most people try to determine what is true by looking at the evidence, forming a hypothesis, testing it, _and then polling the people standing closest to them to see if they'll negatively react to the truth._ That last step is superfluous.
@rustyscrapper
@rustyscrapper 5 жыл бұрын
No, most people decide what is true by finding out what the majority of other people believe as a first step, rationalize that the majority is probably right, skip the part of doing the research and testing to prove its true because that is a lot of work. The thing they don't bother to think about is that everyone is doing the same thing as them and believing the same false narrative.

I reject the premise of the question, that belief requires evidence. Knowledge requires evidence. Belief is a state of agnosticism without evidence. You don't "believe" in evolution, you accept the theory based on evidence, or you trust the evidence that supports it. I know this is a typical atheist nuance, but I try not to use belief when having conversation about facts and evidence.

Knowledge is a type of belief. 'Belief' refers to a state of consciousness and says nothing about the truth value contained within the proposition which is the content of the belief in question. A provisional definition for knowledge is that it is justified true belief

More atheists trying to defend the weak-minded theists (on this one issue). Its not the 'belief' we are trying to call out. Even I believe in a whole bunch of things, just not a mythical God nonsense. It is the claim of what the belief is about. Theists 'believe' in a claimed mythical God. Therefore we reject that claim through lack of sufficient evidence (and due to lack of good reason as well). No one is trying to say 'belief' all on its own is rejected!! It is about their belief in a supernatural. There is one difference here. And that's when deluded theists say they believe in belief in their God. This is merely a play on words. As 'belief' itself canNOT be used as your sufficient evidence (or good reason) to believe in a ridiculous mythical God. We reference theistic 'belief' regarding their claimed supernatural God. That is all.
@mvsawyer
@mvsawyer 5 жыл бұрын
@@kimsland999 Then the theists project this belief system on to "belief in the scientific method" or "belief in science" as if a theist's myth belief is the same as a saying we believe in the theory of relativity. This is the reason I avoid the word altogether. Especially when embattled with a theist.
@kimsland999

@@mvsawyer I feel like I'm quoting Matt Dillahunty from a 100 occasions. When theists use the word 'belief' they mean it in a particular way that is NOT how others use belief in things such as the Sun rising tomorrow (or world turniing, but you understand). The point is the way in which they use the term 'belief' is stated as: The strong belief in a supernatural God; merely by stating the word belief. Whereas when secular/humanists/atheists use the word belief, like 'I believe... such n such" They are NOT saying they believe in a supernatural God. The word 'believer' in theism equates to 'believer in a supernatural God' When you use the word belief, we have no idea what its about until you provide the subject of your belief. Regarding projecting the word belief onto the scientific method (yes all to often I hear many examples of this) This is NOT how they use the term belief. When they state 'I believe in evolution/gravity etc' They are use the word belief in a different way. They are now using the word belief not in relation to a supernatural, and therefore their 'belief' in evolution is a mistaken sentence structure (damn there's a word there that defines that I can't think of), as they merely need to accept those scientific facts. I do not think you should avoid the word 'belief' with theists. As you may as well avoid the label jesus filth ;)

Then send that to me at lightspeed through your computer stronger than what NASA used to reach the moon across fibrechannel cable at lightspeed cross-continent so that I may retort with a sarcastic "I told you so."

The fact that we use science to make discoveries and improve technology to better our society is completely irrelevant to his point. Why do we trust and use the scientific method? It doesn't matter if you're curing cancer or making the next atomic bomb, the method works. It accomplishes what it's meant to do. There's nothing pragmatic about that concept at all. You're confusing the method itself with the expected outcome of applying that method. Your argument, on the other hand: "belief in Christ is true because Western civilization just works", is neither pragmatic nor reasonable. Sounds like a non sequitur to me. What exactly is your point? Other than it's not his best argument? That statement may or may not be true, but you certainly have not explained why.

@@knockdownwheel542 It's epistemologically a pragmatic argument to say that "this theory must be true because it works". Just watch Jordan B Peterson explain his view on truth, which is totally pragmatic. He says certain ideas are true because they keep you alive. My main point was that Dawkins' argument is not strong from a rational/logical point of view. The analog I provide is not supposed to be a strong argument. If you are unbiased you will see it is on the same level. "science is true because it produces working technology" : "Christianity is true because it Christian countries produced working societies"
