The best reason for believing in God . God has proven himself billions of times . Every time a baby is born , it is the gift of life from God . Only God can create life . Scientists certainly cannot create life . Dolly the Sheepinstein was a heartless , souless clone . I know that atheism has nothing to do with evolution , so are you an atheist who wants to shed the shackles of the ridiculous belief of evolution ? Then please at least question evolution . Darwin is not infallible . Do not make him into some sort of a god . Denounce Darwin and his pseudo science . Jesus is the truth and he is alive today . Darwin was a lying con man , sob , snake oil salesman , perverted finch molester and the son of the devil . Check out Ben Stein's excellent documentary ' Expelled : No Intelligence Allowed ', which there are brilliant scientists who are fired simply because they questioned the ' almighty ' Darwin . All Darwin is , is a troublemaker !

Very okay discussion. Do you really want to totally end tax exemption for religion writ large? Do we have an example of a society without religion entirely, where a foundational school of ethics is presented first class?? I think evidence is evidence and industry is industry, but you cant axe the church for convenience and educationa sake without sacrificing something...like moral conventions are begotten from *responsible* churches. And its a shame we have to even underscore that, but that underscores my point further. Shame on megachurches, and the megachurch of marketing. And humanism, ethics, and even old-world moralisms can coexist with new age natural and social sciences. Thank you

Dawkins says DNA is chemical ROM, and digital base 64 megabytes of "Solves the problem of," for human's need for explanation. Not looking at the big picture of how the dance beneath works. I hope this comment finds you well Dr. Hawkins. I do think 65 million years is far too short of a time for millions of things going right one after another, to produce us, and every other life around us. This universe rules the laws of entropy, where order turns to disorder. Not the other way around. I also think this universe had no beginning and no end. An oscillating universe that keeps blowing up as a single black hole after trillions of years. God is in the details. God is the universal mind that manifests in evolutionary beings everywhere the environment allows. DNA is like an infection that travels the universe via panspermia. Life is an infection of sorts. You are not wrong about religion's God being a hoax and man-made. However, you stopped their and didn't go after the goal of a God. What would a God want most of all? My conclusion is it would want to live as all the life forms possible. Learn as much as possible at each iteration of the universe. In order to do that, It needs a universe that mimics a brain that could act as an evolutionary amplifier, with galaxies interconnected by hydrogen highways. Yes, the latest research has proven me right. That there are ionized hydrogen highways between galaxies. What is the purpose of them? Our brain, is just like the universe. All interconnected neurons, acting as one mind. The universal mind, uses galaxies instead of neurons. When we destroy ourselves, it won't make the slightest difference. There are thousands of other more advanced civilizations that are not blood thirsty violent apes, but also humanoid! How is that possible if the evolution was not written into to the mathematical equations we call reality? That also explains the alien presence on Earth for centuries, and human abductions for medical biopsies. It explains animal mutations with only certain organs removed. These beings are also after knowledge. They are studying us and our societies for hundreds of years. They want to become Gods themselves. They are doing what we dream of doing today with Ai and robotics. Except ours is a pathetic attempt and theirs is genetics engineering on the level we can't even dream of. There is a God. He lives as all life everywhere. He might even be an Ai we are so afraid of. When there is no spacetime, any computer can simulate an infinite universe under the rule of mathematical models. Be well.

Uh, Bishop Dennett, you need to trim your beard (less and thinner is better) and make it more pleasing to the eyes, less distracting and make you more credible in your expositions. A messy beard says you have no time for mundane amenities. It also says something about personal hygiene. You look inrelligent enough with your glasses and actually dont need your beard as an added prop. You also need to fix your tie. That said, re your exposition: I still have to hear you say what your actual position is on the God Question. Is he real to you or not? If not, why not? For humble me, I believe in God because of you being you in your honest opinion of who or what God is. I call this his unique gift of Freewill, a no-holds-barred, freewilling, off-the-cuff, honest to goodness to do as you please type of freedom to say or think about him without diminishing or demeaning yourself in his divine sight as his precious image of himself. You still need to trim that beard. No excuses accepted.

There is a lot to be learned by sharing in this discussion. I find it so illuminating to watch _how_ these great minds share the time and conversation when you *_know_* each one of them has books upon books of knowledge and insight to share on these topics. So rewarding to experience. About 9:02, I think Sam's point is that we need to retake the language confiscated by religion and redefine it in a non-supernatural way. If we can do that, people will have a way to identify and share their experiences with a shared language that does not require a supernatural aspect. And I think that is important and practical in terms of reaching out to people. Note for my future discussions: Take a drink when you are done with your point.

Stephen Hawking and the No Boundary Proposal. "I still believe the universe has a beginning in real time, at the big bang. But there's another kind of time, imaginary time, at right angles to real time, in which the universe has no beginning or end." -Stephen Hawking Black Holes and Baby Universes If as Stephen Hawking believed before he died, that the universe always existed ... that does away completely with the theory that the universe was created. If his theory was correct ... then there wasn't any creator ... or plan ... and that would mean that suffering of all forms of life always was ... and is ... natural. It would also mean that energy and consciousness in one form or another also always existed. And concerning that system of belief that the universe always existed ... Stephen was not alone. From the book … 2000 Years of Disbelief … author … James A. Haugt … “None of the gods has formed the world, nor has any man; it has always been.”-Empedocles (495-435 B.C.E.), Greek philosopher and statesman (Noyes) … “The universe has been made neither by gods nor by men, but it has been, and is, and will be eternally.”-Heraclitus (Noyes) ... “The nature of the universe has by no means been made through divine power, seeing how great are the flaws that mar it”-Lucretius, ibid.

Rational thinking is a wonderful tool, but it has its limitations. Like any other computational system, the quality of its output is dependent on the quality of its inputs: its starting premises. When thinking about Life, the inputs include our own experience and our paradigm, i.e., our basic understanding of what the world is and how it works. One's paradigm can even determine what kinds of evidence and argument are considered reasonable, and how much weight (credence) to give to a particular type of evidence. For seekers of truth, it is important to recognize one's own paradigm, one's own preconceptions -- whether physicalist, theist, or anything else -- and to be willing to seek new experience. "And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

@@paleopal I agree, but I wouldn't put a negative connotation on "emotional" answers. The emotional aspect MUST be addressed if an answer is to satisfy the whole of a persons being. the reason we see so many videos on this particular issue is that it's the one established scientific fact that receives the most current-day pushback. there has been pushback against nearly all scientific discovery throughout history, but eventually religious folks decided there's no necessary contradiction between their beliefs and the things we now know about the cosmos and the micro world (from cells to sub-atomic particles). Evolution Theory is backed by an astonishing amount of evidence, but religious texts are far more descriptive on the origins of life than they are about the nature of matter and the cosmos, so it creates a dissonance. There is a whole cottage industry of folks using unscientific techniques to try to align origin-of-life matters to the literal Bible. It's honestly weird to me, as I know plenty of folks who are religious jews/muslims/christians who don't see evolution as contradictory to their faith, as the "how/why" things are is less important as "that" things are. And even that's not why we see so many videos, as science does not require "believers". The issue is that there is/was a movement to force religion-based origin theories in non-religious public schools.

When talking puzzles and mysteries Daniel Dennet disagrees with Noam Chomsky that mysteries are insolvable. In other words mysteries are puzzles yet to be solved. I think he misses a massive reality here, and that is fundamentally the dilemma of the human personality. It is that the personality simply cannot rest until the mystery has been resolved. That is the nature of the personality. There are humans however, whose personality has been seen to not really exist other than as a kind of illusion, that rest in the mystery. In other words the problem is the search, and liberation is the end of the seeker. This is different than religion because it is not in any way a belief, it is a simple seeing of what already is. Where Daniel is accurate is when he says that mystery has no place in Science. That’s true. And religion in its clumsy and arrogant way tries to occupy the space that that leaves.
