I think the idea is not so much the specific applicability of the skills, yet what the training form does in an actual game scenario. Think of it like skateboarding. You want that skateboard to be an extension of your body, not a tool you stand on. Same thing with basketball. The ball should be an extension of your self. A piece of who you are.
