To explain why this is stupid: Left and right only describe positions relative to the orientation of your own body. East and west are not relative to your body. They are relative to either the magnetic poles of the Earth, or the rotation of the Earth around its axis. Either way works, and the magnetic poles hold true even if you reject a spherical model of Earth. The sun rises in the magnetic east and sets in the magnetic west, regardless of your body's orientation. That's why it can rise on your left one day, and on your right the next. The sun's trajectory across the sky has not changed. Only your orientation has changed. As another poster said, you are not the centre of the universe. The sun does not revolve around you.

I suspect what David was trying to do is imply that the local variance of the direction of the geomagnetic field would confuse some people's sense of cardinal directions. Little does he know that Mintaka and η Aquarius each rise at due east and set at due west for everyone and that a point roughly between Achemar and The Southern Cross is due south and that local cardinal directions can be accurately determined by tracking any star that appears to travel a large angular distance across the night sky. (Take three unit-length beatings of a star A, B, C over two decent time intervals. Calculate N′ = (C−B)⨯(B−A). N = N′(1/||N′||) is the vector to the celestial north pole, which may be turned into azimuth and elevation at leisure.)

Its just as light during the day as the night. So he can just travel to Sweden to see the sun for 24 hours straight. It happens between may and July. Its a really wierd feeling because if you wake up during the night you get so confused on what time it is, is it morning or did you just go to bed? Its just as bright. And if he dont like the sun, just come during winter and you only get to see the sun for a short time during the day, its mostly just dark. So yeah, no problem seeing the sun 24 hours here. The ability of flat earthers to misunderstand and mischaractarize arguments presented to them and jump to completely illogical conclusions is astonishing. Flat earther Kyle Adams has a “debate” board that has explained countless times why orbits work and he refuses to acknowledge it. I even got him to agree that a force acting perpendicular to an object in motion wouldn’t change its speed. But when I took that one step farther and asked if he thought the speed of an object in a circular orbit should stay the same, he 180’d and said the object should crash back down to earth because gravity.

I never believed in flat earth (thankfully I came up with lots of things indicating that it's not flat), but I used to be a conspiracy type of guy. What made me not really believe but seriously consider some of the alternative history and such is the fear of being fooled. It's a well known fact that undemocratic regimes distort the history in order to make a strong association between the modern government and the past glory, so tge question "why would anyone need to fool the entire humanity?" was barely ever risen. Since then I have watched lots of science content, gave up the alternative "theories" and even gave up religion. But still even today I often come across claimes like "THAT scientist has built the car that works on water", "THIS engineer has discivered levitation", I even heard from my university teacher that a guy he knows built a pseudoscientific vortex heat generator and that it works - and that makes me scared that maybe I still have the wrong idea how this world works and maybe there IS some conspiracy in oil industry (like there was one among light bulb manufacturers, which I'm not sure really happened, but is talked about), and maybe science community doesn't accept new inventions that supposedly defy laws of physics as we know them. Like, seriously, it's hard to say "it's wrong because it wasn't published in a peer reviewed scientific journal" when someone claimes that science community won't publish it because they're being d**ks. You can't accept video demonstration as proof for obvious reasons, but you also can't dismiss those claims of new inventions simply because they're not published somewhere, because the honest way of thinking is to always be open to the possibility that this time the alternative guy is correct. Simply because I, an unemployed man-child nolifer, watched hundreds of hours of science debunking alternative and conspiracy arguments, I don't instantly believe every time I hear something like "Boris Natashev invented a new source of energy and was k1ll3d bu KGB because Garzprom money", but a lot of alternative enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists are old men with jobs, families, unhealthy vodka consumption (I genuinely don't want this to make them sound worse than they are) and, being old dudes, much less mental power to sense lies. They are not necessarilly d*mb people, they're actually smart. They're smart enough to try to think what sounds logical (even though they haven't reached that education level at which they have the right sense of logic). They have a healthy skepticism towards obscure ideas (except they spend way more time at alternative resources, and what is doubious to them is not what is doubious to us). And all those stu pid things they say are not necessarilly a product of them being unable to logic, it's more of the result of them not trusting the science. Like, that thing "believe what you can witness or prove on your own" is actually a pretty healthy idea! Yes, it's super inefficient, and our civilization is what it is because humans trust other humans, their observations and conclusions. But I wouldn't say it's something only a du*b person would follow.

Ok, let's say I have a sudden lapse in intellect and was even remotely willing to entertain the idea of a flat earth.... have any of them offered any reasonable explanation as to why there would ever be this huge conspiracy to lie about the shape of the earth? If the earth is flat, why all this effort to make us believe otherwise? What is to be gained by doing so? Most conspiracy theories, even the craziest most outlandish offer some reason why the truth would be covered up. In fact, the reason for the cover up is kind of one of the bigger scandals of a truly good conspiracy cover up. It almost always comes down to certain entities fearing threats to expose bigger goings on than just the one little thing being covered up. So, there's a huge cover up to keep the masses from ever realizing the truth of our worlds being flat.... what's the bigger picture they fear being exposed? They never say why anyone would have ever initiated a huge mind fuck like this. How is it we are the only flat planet? Or are they denying the existence of space? It blows my mind that anyone could truly believe that nonsense. It's just crazy.

It was a ton of calculating to do, but in the end, it was always correct. Now go ahead and foresee a lunar eclipse using your model of the flat earth. Don't just scream about some off-topic stuff, just tell me. If you can actually give me a mathematically correct prediction+calculation for the next solar/lunar eclipse, I might start to believe in a flat earth as well. I know multiple people that are working at NASA and I am pretty familiar with the way that the cosmos works. I'd sure as hell be interested to see a valid explaination of how all of that is wrong. No, not just you telling me that it's "faked", I want you to explain everything we can calculate (and that is a LOT, so buckle up) using your model instead. There are many scientific concepts that rely on the Earth being round, even though flat-earthers may not realize it. Here are a few examples: * **Navigation:** Ships and airplanes use the Earth's curvature to navigate. If the Earth were flat, they would not be able to travel long distances without getting lost. * **Time zones:** Time zones are based on the Earth's rotation. If the Earth were flat, there would be no need for time zones. * **Solar eclipses:** Solar eclipses only happen because the Earth's shadow is round. If the Earth were flat, solar eclipses would not be possible. * **Gravity:** Gravity is what keeps us on the ground. If the Earth were flat, gravity would not work the same way. * **Seasons:** Seasons are caused by the Earth's tilt. If the Earth were flat, there would be no seasons. These are just a few examples of the many scientific concepts that rely on the Earth being round. Flat-earthers may not realize it, but they are benefiting from these concepts every day. In addition to the scientific concepts listed above, there are also many everyday technologies that rely on the Earth being round. For example, GPS, maps, and weather forecasting all rely on the Earth's curvature. Even the way we communicate with each other over long distances relies on the Earth being round. So, the next time you see a flat-earther, you can remind them that they are benefiting from the round Earth, even if they don't realize it.
