Somehow, this is the first video in the playlist that is not new to me. I missed so much of the basics in lower grade school, and suddenly had good teachers in high school. Doesn't seem like it, but this is a huge thing to realize and correct.

I’ve been struggling with getting my GED.. I was supposed to graduate in 2003... I’ve been putting it off for the longest time because math scares me. I stumbled upon your video about Alpha Centauri and I liked it so I browsed your channel and thank you for this. I’m going to start studying again and go for my GED. Thank you.

Professor Dave.... I want to ask you is there any way that we can weight the weight of a tree or plant without using a scale or cut the tree down??? please respond soon..... thank you Professor
@ZopcsakFeri3 жыл бұрын
I have an idea: you build a big cylinder around the tree, and then another one without the tree. Fill up both with water, measure how much water you could fill in there, subtract one from the other = you get the volume of the tree. Now measure the moisture content of the tree (or if you cannot measure it, then assume about 50% water content if the tree is alive). Multiply this volume by the specific mass of water = you get half of the weight of the tree. Then you multiply the other half (of roughly the other 40-45% if you could measure the moisture content) of the tree volume with the specific weight of Carbon. That will be the other half weight of the tree. Add the two together, and you get the full weight of the tree. Unfortunately I can't tell right now how to include the roots - I think this method only works for the part above the ground. It's almost mindnight now and I haven't slept in 2 days, so let me know what you think :D I might come up with less insane ideas when well rested.
@ZopcsakFeri3 жыл бұрын
Well, as for the roots... maybe assume the volume of the branches, so from the full above-ground volume of the tree you would have to subtract the cylinder that's the tree trunk (d/2)^2*π*h, where "d" is the diameter of the tree, supposing that you cannot measure the "radius" directly), "h" is the height of the tree trunk. Now that you have the volume of the tree trunk, you multiply it with the specific weight of water and carbon in the ratio of the moisture content, subtract that from the full mass of the tree and you get the mass of the branches/canopy. Finally assume that the branch volume roughly equals the root volume, so you add the branch mass again to the above-ground mass of the tree, and thus you get the TOTAL MASS of the full tree without having using a scale or cutting it down.
