I got into the genre from crossovers. But tbf me as a young lad/teen had a vastly different gaming preference to now 30 year old me. Young me would be shocked i havent touched a shooter in 5 years. @planescaped I honestly used JP VO and I find it pretty good. I haven't gotten far and only just have beaten Zhang Jiao and it's pretty much the best portrayal of him to date. I do agree it feels really different and might caters to newer player. I always treat it as different game, more like Samurai Remnant than DW 8 XL or 8 Empires which is my all time favorite. Despite its flaws.

Ive kinda fallen out of love with the series since 8, but I really enjoyed some of the spinoffs (namely the Fire Emblem and Persona warriors games) and was really hoping to see the main Dynasty Warriors series take some cues from their fantastic spinoffs to push the series forward, I’m glad that seems to be the case. Though I can’t say I love there being only one playable character. One of my favorite things about the series is all the different playable characters. Still, great review. Thank you for covering this.

Rest assured, this is the reboot they needed. I think they needed to be succesful with this new proof of concept in order to justify funding for making the next game or dlc which will feature more and more of the massive cast we've come to love.

Dang, one of my favorite features in DW is the unique weapons, twin fans, flutes, chain whips, etc. It’s a bummer they watered it down this severely. Have been such a huge fan since DW3.

Hopefully they add an online co-op (only when you need help you can send a friend an 13:34 invite to help you with a battle) because you do have a npc companion so why not be able to invite a friend instead

Coming off of Samurai Remnant where I liked the perfect dodge and parry mechanics but still thought the it didn’t quite* nail things I couldn’t be happier. Wait that’s not entirely true, I would’ve like coop but that aside I’m a big fan of this one. It’s probably just me but I usually only found one or two characters that I liked and stuck with them anyway.

My first was SW4 and although I had fun it wasn't really fleshed out. I then played the berserk one and also had the same gripes. This game just seems so grounded and easy to manage at the same time. The real time optics (morale) feel so balanced and officers hold their own. Highly recommend only 5 hours in but was waiting for this game for so long so gonna be playing more later! (Hard Mode is really fun too!)

This game is so depressingly frustrating. The gameplay is great, but only ONE playable character and no co-op is a deal breaker. Especially with how many games are cutting co-op these days. No co-op in Tales of Arise, no co-op in Visions of Mana, it's depressing. I'll wait and see if/when they patch in Free Mode. You can't expect me to pay $70 for a Dynasty Warriors with NO playable female characters. No, being able to temporarily switch to Sun Shang Xiang as a super move does not count.

I enjoyed the demo. But I couldn’t beat Lu Bu. I had 0 health potions. I went back a little farther and went in with 2… but I just didn’t wanna start over. I found it funny bc I’m also playing Wo Long, and am stuck on Lu Bu, but I was one hit away twice. Didn’t get close at all in dynasty warriors.

Old fan of the series, though I haven't played much since the PS2/3 era. Promised I'd never pay for early access again after Starfield........ but I was bored on Tuesday evening and I caved (it was an extra ten dollars in the region I live, which is like one drink in a bar in a major city, so I figured what the hell). Thoughts are much the same as yours: Positives Combat system, much improved, more cerebral, not just endlessly hacking and slashing as in the earlier DS games. Probably not for everyone as it has much more of an Elden Ring/Souls feel with Iframes dodges and parries, but there is a reason that many/most melee fighting games use some form of this system Level up system is odd (use different weapons to rank up your character) but actually really works to introduce you to all the weapons and their moveset (when you use a weapon it usually has a limited moveset) Great set piece battles, and the newer tech really lets you feel epic when two massive armies charge into each other and you can actually see every single soldier (instead of previous eras when draw distance meant you often couldn't see half the soldiers that "existed". - Outside the main character the story is told pretty well, and I like the characterization of most of the main characters. Negatives I'm on board with one character I suppose, I don't have the time as an adult to play through the campaigns of every damn character in the three kingdoms! However, I really don't dig some decisions made ON that character. - Making you stick to one character and not giving you an customization options at all seems like a massive own goal. He's designed like a K-Pop boy band member. I don't care "too" much, but it does seem a weird decision. - I'm more dissapointed by just how........ boring the "character" is. There's plenty of dialogue choices but very few allow you to say anything interesting, most of them are just "nodding agreement", the character doesn't seem to have any..... character. This is compounded by the basic premise "Mighty warrior with Amnesia about some mysterious past?" I almost can't think of anything more generic. I'm more of an RPG fan than any other genre, so maybe people wouldn't like this, but if they are gonna give us one character I'd really like it if we could define this character more by branching choices in dialogue, battlefield and so on. This feels like it could really give us an amazing consequences driven RPG.

I honestly wish they would use these assets and reboot dw4, allowing you to play the campaign with every character, bring back customisation. Also allow players to shrink or get rid of the map and HUD. It takes up way too much space. I want to like this, but I can’t get into it.

My favorite warriors games are the empire games where you make characters and take over the country. And even with the normal games, the fun is play as all these historical characters. Why is it only 1 playable character now?

There's so much missing from the game that I just cannot justify the $70 asking price. No co-op mode, no mode where you play as the officers or others well-known generals, as far as I'm aware no conquest mode, no character creator, Dynasty warriors games from 2004 had more features and modes. Yes, you're getting a great story, developed characters, and what is here is extraordinarily high quality. But with all of the omissions, I just don't see it being worth a day one buy for me even as a huge fan of the series.

I was very turned off by the demo. Everything seemed fine at first and I recognized a clear lacking of skill on my part. As the battle continued I became a bit more familiar with the gameplay, but still needed significant improvement. I got to the final gate and the grand battle began. I was so overwhelmed by the constant pause to force feed me information that I just gave up. There were so many npcs on the field I couldn't see my character at times. I was trying to accept the duel, but my inputs didn't work. It was a complete disaster. If I push through and replay the demo does the pop up, pop in, forced information continue or is that a once and done? Is the game that overwhelming?
