Four of us were sitting in the back of a 1962(?) Dodge pickup camper, on a hill at the Brazos River, underaged and drinking beer in '68 when we all heard "Jumping Jack Flash" for the first time. Later, with nothing to do with JJF, we felt the truck vibrating and realized the truck was rolling. Downhill we were rolling when my friend Jimmy Shofner jumped out, running to open the cab door. The door hit a tree and slamming his lower leg into the door. He was able to stop the truck about 15 feet from going over the ledge, straight into the water. Bill, my bestie, forgot to put the emergency brake on and it slipped out of 1st gear, which should have been left in reverse. That little adventure is what I think of every time I hear "Jumping Jack Flash". Oh, and Jimmy's leg was ok, just got a pretty big bruise out of his heroic act.

This song hit the AM radio stations in Chicago shortly after I turned the age of 10. I had been a huge Beatles fan through the influence of my older sister, and I knew of the Stones and their hit with Satisfaction, but when I heard JJF it hit me like a ton of bricks. I rode my bicycle a couple of miles to a little neighborhood record store and I bought the 45 rpm with the allowance my mom gave me for keeping my bedroom clean. It was my first solo purchase of music and I still have that 45. I never get tired of hearing that song. Now, I'm over 66 yrs old and nearing retirement. I'm still standing after overcoming a lot of personal and professional challenges, and I'm seriously considering a Rolling Stones logo tattoo on my arm to commemorate my perseverance. Under the logo my tattoo will state "It's all right now. In fact, it's a gas!" Rock on!

No other band or soloist has quite captured my attention as The Stones. When l was a curious teenager l'd heard about John Lennon getting murdered, l think that's possibly when l wanted to buy a Beatles record. So l bought one and played it repeatedly until l saw Start Me Up. I was fixated and l've loved them ever since. For no.1 songs The Beatles have it over everyone. But, for me their ability to write and perform in the genres they've continued to do for so long is phenomenonal. I didn't fully realise how good Keith's riffs were until l was in my 30s. Since then l've also realised how many great sounds he and Mick have created. A lot of people already agree Satisfaction is the best rock song ever written. But what l'm also incredibly amazed about is, they've got a classic in almost every decade of their existence. Ironically l was thinking about Keith and he clearly puts his heart and soul into these riffs. And l just saw this video that describes him as such. It's that total commitment to their music which's stood the test of time. I remember reading how they were encouraged to write their own songs. It's as if they went on a mission, and boy did they write!

As an aside, my personal favorite version is the Johnny Winter And Live with Rick Derringer sharing guitar duties! Little did I know that when a friend & I went to the Pasadena (Texas) radio station that 3 Dog Night would walk through the back door where we were. We smoked pot and jammed then they were interviewed by the DJ for the concert the next night. I also got to see the Doors at the Sam Houston Colosseum (where I saw the Stones). It only cost $1 too. And I was only 12 rows away. The stage was primitive compared to now. It was just a 3 feet tall platform with white curtains around the edges. During one of the songs Jim Morrison went under the stage and yelled out saying he wanted a girl to meet him under the stage. He repeated that several times. The music was fantastic. Years later, in 2004, I saw The Rolling Stones again but I was so far away from the stage I couldn’t recognize any of the band. And the cost of the tickets were $297 each. Gone are cheap $1 tickets. And gone are the days when you could get front row seats for a few bucks. There will never be an era of music as great as the 1960s & 1970s.

It is an archetypal Rock and Roll tune. One of the things I don't like about the live versions is that they always start off with the riff, not the lead in to it on the record. It is probably impossible to recapture that. The record, that guitar is like an engine with the chain being pulled, or a beast arising angrily from a cave, the other instruments gradually join in, like it is not planned, they are learning as they go. Then as the introduction reaches it's peak, it breaks down, breaking down into that mother of all riffs. Like all great Rock songs, it is simple. But only a genius or a wizard can conjure those notes into magic, and that record is it.

I can only imagine the resentment Jones experienced by getting kicked to the curb by his own band. Thanks for taking one for the team, Brian.
@fleetskipper18102 ай бұрын
Brian’s story is a tragic one. In my own life, I’ve experienced the slow deterioration of personality that alcoholism causes in someone. The band probably tolerated his deterioration for a long time, then finally had to tell him that as long as he was drinking like that, he wasn’t helping the band, he was hurting it. Brian would’ve taken it as a huge rejection and failure because alcoholics no longer have the ability to self regulate their emotions or think straight. It’s a sad, sad, sad thing to witness and experience, and it’s even more tragic for the person that it is happening to. The worst thing is that even if Brian had wanted to change, he would not have been able to without outside help. And alcoholics resist accepting help until they are almost dying. When they’re that far gone, alcohol has become their best friend. Mere humans can’t compete with that. All to say that I think that it’s harsh to say that the band “kicked him to the curb.” He kicked himself to the curb. The band went along with it as long as they could, and then finally realized that things would not get better. Brian’s loss is a tragedy, but that kind of addictive downward spiral is very very hard to halt.

Bill Wyman claims he invented the JJF riff. Years later, Bill, Billy Preston and Charlie Watts were jamming a riff in the studio and Jagger entered saying "blimey that's good" and stole it as Miss You.

I first heard heard this song the day I got my hands on THE CONCERT FOR BANGLA DESH. When Leon Russell came on with that absolutely stoned-out-of-his-mind wildman voice, I was like, "What the hell is THAT??" (That was the same day I first heard Bob Dylan.) I later got to see the film on a big screen on a midnight show. Russell looked even crazier than he sounded! (So hard to believe at times he wrote a couple of songs done by the Carpenters-- heh.) I eventually heard The Rolling Stone's version on Philly's WPEN-AM, the short-lived rock & roll oldies station (1975-79) that put all "classic rock" stations in the decades since TO SHAME. I started buying RS records in early 1978, going all the way back to their beginnings and continuing on after that for quite some time. I love the original version, but, in some ways, I think Russell had better (certainly wilder) vocals.

No question on the impact of this song. Heard this in HS and blasted it on my cassette player in my Chevy Malibu. Have been blessed to hear it live about 12 times. Kieth is right and I’d go one step further; everyone in the stadium is levitating when he hits those opening chords live. We all know the song immediately.

Summer of '68 was hard rock heaven on AM radio. Jumpin' Jack Flash was not exactly hard rock, (strictly my opinion), but it was the hardest the Stones had ever played up to that time. Then there was Born to be Wild, In-a-Gadda-da-vida, Sunshine of Your Love, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Hello I Love You...for one week, the top ten were all rockers. THAT never happened again.

Personally, as a big fan of The Rolling Stones, my favorites tracks are the ones when Jones was involved. They were more melodic creative trying new sounds and instruments like the sitar… after Jones death, most of their albums sounded the same with a few hits here and there. Always chasing the latest music craze, like glam rock and even disco in the eighties. ✋🏻🇺🇸

As a guitar-driven rock song by the Stones that was to energize and hugely influence 60s rock, my vote goes to "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" (1965) which was released before Jumping Jack Flash (1968) and had that iconic, unforgettable and instantly recognizable guitar riff from the start. Stones were raunchy blues-rock, Beatles were mainstream pop: "Let's Spend The Night Together" v. "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Grandmothers loved the Beatles and detested the Stones. Mick Jagger mimicking performing oral sex on stage while singing "Brown sugar, how come you taste so good, just like a black girl should" while a doe-eyed baby-faced Paul McCartney was singing about yesterday and "We all live in a yellow submarine." 😀

That's a cool jester from Richards. I've heard that the Stones are nice to their fans. I've heard that Jagger would go to the handicap area of each concert and give the concert goers in that area signed tapes of stones music and chat with them for a little before the concert. Great video! i like the Beatles, but I LOVE the Stones! They've meant more to me than any other band, starting from the very moment I first heard I'm a King Bee back in '64 or whenever it was. Flash meant a lot to me, mainly because it came out not too long after what I consider their lowest point of all, Their Satanic Majesties Request, an album I actually like nowadays much more than when it came out, esp the song 2000 Man. 😅😅😅
