I remember putting Wang Chung on my name tag at work. I worked part-time at an independent video store all through high school and college. The owner was never there and allowed us to do stuff like that. One of the guys had Fletch on his. We would change it around and if anyone pointed it out, they go some free rentals. I took two weeks before it was noticed. Unfortunately it was an old Jewish lady who wondered why I had an Asian last name. A co-worker, god I can’t remember his name, told her I was adopted by an Asian family. Of course he didn’t tell me this and it took a while to connect the dots on that one. Her and I had some really strange conversations, that when I figured it out, finally made sense. We never did correct her. Man those were good times. I was born in 1968, the best year to be born when it came to the eighties.

It’s funny how they list guys like Wang Chung, Cutting Crew, Kim Carnes, the Knack, Robbie Dupree etc. All as “One Hit Wonders” (Even VH-1’s One Hit Wonder Special Has Labelled Them as “One Hit Wonders”) When these guys had plenty of hits, so they’re not technically “one hit wonders” as their labelled as. It’s also funny that people think the Austrian producer Peter Wolf is the Peter Wolf from the J. Geils Band when it’s not, it’s some guy with the same name (I was watching a video a few years back from this girl talking about Red Rider’s “Lunatic Fringe” and she was like “Peter Wolf from the J. Geils Band is the one doing the spooky synth intro at the beginning” but it’s not, it’s the Austrian Producer, and a vlogger wrote the exact same thing on an album he posted of a Canadian rocker and I had to correct him. I use to make that mistake too back when I listened to Starship’s Greatest Hits a decade ago, and I saw his name on the writing credits and thought it was the Peter Wolf from the J. Geils Band, but it wasn’t) Also, I find it interesting that Michael McDonald is doing the background vocals on that Wang Chung record (I wish the album credits listed which track he’s on, I guess we have to use our ears to find his voice)

Peter Wolf (the producer rather than the singer for J. Geils band) was one of those hidden game changers who helped define the sound of the '80s. The man who basically helped Wang Chung find their sound on this album also arranged "Night Shift" by The Commodores and "We Built This City" by Starship. He was the driving force behind Heart's self titled album from 1985 where they redefined their sound. Genius.

It's also interesting that the catchphrase came by accident cause of Jack Hues ad-libbing in the studio and Peter Wolf told him to keep it in and it ended up becoming a catchphrase for TV. Almost 10 years ago (just before your interview was posted and I remember watching this interview when it was up a few years back) My brother and I were watching a Disney TV movie and the dad in the film went "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight" and we were like "Isn't that from the song" And then we thought "Oh, Maybe it's a word that Chinese people use" But thanks to this video, I later found out it is from this song and it became a catchphrase for pop culture. (And I remember a few years before we watched that Disney Movie, when we saw Alvin & the Chipmunks on TV, apparently that exact channel Teletoon Retro, cause it's a Canadian channel from here, anyway, When we heard the Alvin & the Chipmunks, cover, we've noticed they sang the line as "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight" and my brother and I were getting confused at that thinking "why are they saying Wang Chung tonight when they're not Wang Chung" 😄 Again, before I knew about it being a catchphrase)

If Happy to be Stuck with You from Huey Lewis isn’t on that worst 10 list, there needs to be a congressional investigation.

Dance Hall Days was their best song imo ...

Hey Hey we're the Monkees and people say we "monkey" around uses their name as a verb. The theme from The Monkees was never released in the USA or UK as a single but was a hit from an album.

“Everybody Have Fun Tonight” and “Dance Hall Days” and just plain fun songs. That makes them great, regardless of any lyrical depth. I love great, thoughtful lyrics, but sometimes you just need a fun song that everyone can get into and enjoy. Lyrically, Dance Hall Days is a better song, but it doesn’t have the same fun and energy as Everybody Have Fun Tonight.

That song is still on heavy rotation on 80's radio stations. So they are still getting royalty payments.

This one of the funnest songs of the 80s. So glad I grew up the 80s

What Professor tells us about the songs origins (one member showed it to another and got an immediate negative reaction) is instantly contradicted when the band actually explains what happened around 4:02. Come on, Proffesor!

I did some music programming at a small college station in Maine back in the 1990's. The sheer amount of mediocre music that comes through a two bit place like that if you hustle enough companies puts this song into perspective. It's far from bad.

Amen. The worst song ever is being created every day! ha ha

I always thought Wang Chung was cool, but yes, that video for Everybody Have Fun Tonight has A LOT going on for lack of better words. There is a live version for Dance Hall Days that kicks ass from 1984. Frontman Jack Hues is wearing a pink shirt and the drummer is doing fancy work on his kit at the very beginning.

I don't care what any critic says about this song, or any synth pop song from the 80s. Yes, they may be a bit cheesy, but it's a charming level of cheesy-ness that has made them stand the test of time. It's physically impossible for most people to hear them and not smile. There is a reason why this song is popular 40 years later, while so many modern hit songs are forgotten within a year or two.

I hated sooo much music in the 80's. From Van Hagar to Starship, my rock&roll expectations were dashed at every turn. I hate dance music. I found it impossible to hate this song, despite every effort I could muster. Iconic representation of the eighties, imop.

They were supposed to be in an 80s concert at a casino an hour south of me last fall ( Mulvane, ks) and the show was indefinitely postponed. Wah wah. 😔
