Today, it's the defining track of a big-budget, no holds barred rock opus. But writing this signature song would be a harrowing experience for this band’s frontman Dave Grohl. Just a couple years removed from the suicide of his friend and bandmate, Kurt Cobain when he was in NIRVANA, Dave Grohl was trying to move on. Now with a new band Foo Fighters and writing their second album the Colour and the Shape, he was facing all kinds of problems. The guys weren’t gelling and were exhausted from their perfectionist producer Gil Norton. And then he got served divorce papers at the studio. Crushed by the weight of his crumbling marriage… he put the sessions on pause and flew cross-country to his hometown. There he wrote his best song Everlong, pouring into it everything he was feeling. When it was finished, it would become the biggest song of his career. One that would have millions of fans singing along in unison. Get ready for a banger next.

So it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes, we have covered Time by Pink Floyd, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
Today we are telling the story of a song whose author was heavily influenced by all three of these formidable rock bands. A child of the 70s, these bands played a big role in his own musical journey. The song? The modern rock standard Everlong by the Foo Fighters… written by Dave Grohl for their second studio album The Colour and the Shape I’m recommending the acoustic version up front. You have to hear this if you haven’t already. It’s one of Grohl’s most personal and impassioned songs, Everlong is the Foo Fighters' all-time most streamed track… tallying close to a billion and a half streams on KZbin and Spotify. … Dave Grohl is truly Rock and Roll's last best hope. A man that was made for our times. To keep rock and roll alive and kicking. I have so much respect for this man.
Throughout the course of their career, the Foo Fighters have been on the front lines of rock, fighting to keep the genre alive in the new millennium. And they’ve been winning. At least in terms of commercial success. The band has 27 Top 10 hits on the US Alternative charts. Four of those have reached #2 and ten have gone to #1. Additionally, the Foo Fighters have sold over 32 million albums in the digital era… you know when most people are streaming music or listening to it for free on KZbin… That’s a pretty impressive feat.
But going back to the 90s, The Foo Fighters released their eponymous debut album in the summer of 1995. Although talking about the band in the plural is a misnomer at this point.

@@ProfessorofRock The ColoUr and the Shape is to me Foo Fighters' Dark Side of the Moon, their Abbey Road, their black album, their Moving Pictures, their Nevermind, their quintessential album that defines them. I don't know that it is largesse, per se. Dave doesn't read music notation. That means that he does not chart the instrumentals, leaving the composition of individual parts up to his bandmates. That deserves songwriting credit. Contrast that with, say, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who actually write charts for the other musicians. They deserve all the royalties.

Everlong is about the fleeting nature of those perfect moments that make life worth living. Everyone knows what that’s like and therefore it’s so easy for people to connect to it. On top of that, the song is so masterfully written and performed that it isn’t simply about those fleeting moments, but when it is performed live it is one of those perfect fleeting moments. The best way to describe it is like when in a movie someone hits a bullseye in archery and the next person splits the arrow with a bullseye of their own. It’s simply to good to be true, lyrically, sonically, topically and energy wise it really is an apex for modern rock.

Love your post. My son who is now 36 (next week) gifted me with the new Foo Fighters Album...yes, vinyl and then after listening to "Show Me How" the astounding, beautiful tribute to his Mom (--who, I personally, as a Mother myself, thank for Dave) called and said "I'll be coming by...." and it, that phrase he used, idk. Something has really touched my son from the past 12-15 months. In that short amount of time, Dave lost Taylor and then Virginia within four months time. That's the gut punch that kept Dave going. LOOK at Violet and how he sings to the sky along with her. It's an amazingly healing melody. This is a tough world. I'm as proud of my son as Virginia was/is of Dave. Listen, it's the little things indeed.

I remember in 2004 finding out my wife was cheating on me and going through my divorce. I was in shock for weeks, even months, then I was cleaning out my basement and this song came up on the radio. I always loved this song, but never paid attention to the lyrics. But it hearing it sent me into an emotional rage and when Taylor's drum roll hits in the vortex of the song I had tears streaming down my face and was destroying everything I was doing. Boxes and crap was being thrown everywhere and by the time the song was over my sister came over and was golding me while I was slumped against the wall, bawling my eyes out. This song has a special place in my heart.

1997. As a full tilt 21year old romantic who was recovering from relationships that were not to be I was lost in uncertainty. Depression about being alone. Disintegration was my companion during this year of desperation. In August of 1997 I was introduced to the girl who would become my wife. We clicked immediately. Decided to move to the city to pursue education. This was our first time to be out on our own. It seemed every hour kept building, getting better. Everlong's lyrics was a historical document of every breath. The manic craziness of young lovers who barely knew each other striking out into the world. The wonder of the moment, the uncertainty of the future. The intimacy of togetherness. Of course the heavy radio airplay meant that when we came engaged the song would be part of the background. Not playing when the question was asked, but one couldn't escape Everlong. The following year we got married and later had our first of two children. Overlong touched me in a wonderous uplifting way. It was a feeling of optimism. Not in a 80s pop love song track. It was a feeling of I have handed you my soul and this moment , right now, is everything. The next second in the future with you, is everything. This year we will celebrate our 25th anniversary. "could everything could ever be this real forever?" yes.

As a Foo Fighters fan, the songs that go to another level for me are the ones where Dave allows himself to be emotionally raw and vulnerable vs. songs vague enough to be about anyone. I feel like that is part of what makes Everlong so great because 26 years later he sings every word like the reasons behind it are fresh on his mind. "The Teacher" off of the latest album hits like an emotional brick wall because on an album full of songs about grief and loss, it seems the most straightforward with the pain of losing his mother.

I had the privilege to witness Nandi Bushell play drums on Everlong at The LA Forum show in August 2021, my first show back from Covid shutdown :) The night was magic and joy filled that room, but when Nandi came out and played, the look on all the band's faces was like proud Dads. I know that I felt that parent pride having a child close to the same age. But, seeing Taylor and Shane together sitting behind his drum kit watching Nandi play with giant smiles will stay in my heart forever. Watching the legacy, seeing that rock and roll will live on in our children, the Foo's seeing that they are part of that bridge to the next generation. I could not stop crying, and smiling so hard my face hurt.

This is a special song to me, as it's one my mom and I used to blast and sing to on long car trips together. I lost her to cancer 5 years ago next month and I miss her everyday. It was good to hear the touching story behind the song, so thank you for that!

That album has evolved with me as I get older. As a 17 year old Monkey Wrench was my favourite track, and is still an absolute belter. But Everlong eventually took its place, and that track in particular evolved and changes with me, as I get older. I’ve genuinely been close to tears listening to that track at times, but also being in the crowd in Manchester seeing it live with an entire crowd singing along was one of my most euphoric experiences too.

As a die hard Nirvana fan, I was thrilled to see Dave do his own thing after Kurt's death. I fell hard for the Foo Fighters and as I've gotten to know more about Dave as a person, I fell in love with him. I often joke that he is "my husband" (no I'm not a creepy stalker chick... his real family is beautiful). When Taylor died, I cried for days and for many different reasons; the loss of a father and husband, friend, band mate, and brother. I also worried Dave would have an almost impossible time recovering from the loss. Then his mom passed as well. I thought the Foos were done. I really did. But with the release of their new album But Here We Are, I'm thrilled to admit I was oh so wrong. This record takes me back to the first Foos' records that were raw and emotional. As of today, this one is my favorite Foo Fighters release. Ask me tomorrow, it may be The Color and the Shape, the next day Concrete and Gold, and so on. Everlong is not my favorite song in the catalog, but it is up there and hearing Prof's take on it along with the history of the song was awesome. Thanks! 💜

I seen them 3 times. Each time they played a different version of this song. 1 2as the straight electric video version of the song, 1 was the acoustic version with the others playing along obviousl, and the last was Dave starting out on his own going to the harder version. Each time felt new, and magical. I will forever miss Taylor. He was a beast on the drums and PASSIONATE about his music. That was one of the hardest losses I've felt in terms of musicians. My husband and I were eating pizza at a local restaurant; it was a Friday afternoon. A familiar song began playing inside the restaurant. We knew we’d heard it before but couldn’t place it. Then it hit us - it was a piano version of Learn to Fly. The date was March 25, 2022. The next morning we learned of Taylor’s death. To this day when I play that song I think of that day at the pizza place, and of Taylor.

I truly love stories about meeting a Beetle and your dad! That are who made the people who made us.
