How To Assemble A Flat Collar

We demonstrate a professional way to sew in a flat collar. This technique is great for beginners. This tutorial utilizes both collar and facing pieces as the flat collar is sewn directly on the the neckline. I use patterns drafted in our patternmaking series, the link is below, but this technique may help in some of your commercial patterns as well.

I have been sewing for 30 years & my instructions were very on clear on the collar. I have not sewn a shirt with an outer collar with facing in such a long time, I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The minute I saw this I realized immediately that the instructions had an error & they were missing a step. If I had watched this 6 hour ago, I would still have hair. It has only happened to me a few times, but patterns can have errors :)

I'm new 2 ur channel and enjoying all ur technique!!! So very very helpful!!! I was wondering if u could do a serious on all the different types of knit fabrics??? I'm trying to sew with a strech lyrca type material and having a lot of trouble keeping it from sucking down in making a mess and keeping it straight while I sew!!!

Glad you're enjoying our tutorials. I know sewing lycra can be tricky. Try sandwiching the fabric between tissue paper when you sew. This has helped me out and, when I finish, I just tear the tissue paper off. Hope this helps!

Question : isn't the under-stiching enough to maintain the facing in place and do you really need to top-stich the top of the collar? The understitch makes it easier to turn the collar to the inside but it won't hold it there. If you don't want to do a top stitch, you can tack down the facing with a few handstitches to the bodice shoulder seam allowances. I'm so glad you find our tutorials inspiring! :)

I find the most difficult thing is to measure the collar so it fits exactly to the bodice, since the neck is curvy :( could you show how you measure the exact length of the collar? Thank you!
