The only thing I’m sure of is that Kaytranada (and other producers I’m sure, pls recommend!) is the closest thing the 2020s has to Timbaland and the Neptunes, and he deserves to be as huge as they are. I’m the same age as you Prof, so I’m definitely here for new music that harks back to past era-defining sounds, but also bring something new ❤

AVAA but it's quite egotistical to call your review timeless already

I really appreciate your videos and wish there were more youtubers reviewing albums critically with your level of sophistication, hell I wish there youtubers who just paid closer attention to the lyrics. Can you please please do a video on Lupe Fiasco's Testsuo and Youth. Loved your Billy Woods Aethiopes video and Testsuo and Youth is one of those deep layered album's.

Back when he was still Kaytradamus, he made a rap album called Les Filles du Roi with rapper Robert Nelson (who appeared on the Hull album, I believe that you enjoyed his verse). Fun relic from Kaytra's early days.

AVAA I think that quality of Kaytranada’s drums that make them unique is the same element that Dilla utilized, the sextuplet swing. Quest love talks about it because it’s really hard to play live
@variousgrowth2 ай бұрын
The drums are his own stacks and drop sets and he uses time era like star wars backwards so if i do it 10 years and drop it now the urban vibe mismatching time so ear is like tripped in time drums

Lupe pressure used that back to the future use of mis matches of time and space with sound

AVAA Prof, you gotta check out the new Shrapknel album. You might remember them from their features in Woods/Segal's Maps and Blockhead's The Aux. Not only one of the best Hip Hop albums of the year so far, but also sooo right up your alley (I mean c'mon, it even has features by Open Mike Eagle and Elucid)

Ngl I think of Kaytra more like Neptunes than Dilla. Knxwledge of Nxworries makes me think of Dilla in this current age of producers.

AAVA. I wish Kaytranada cut some of the filler off his albums and brought more out of his features performances. Drip sweat would fit perfectly on the kaytramine tape last year and I think amine would’ve given a more animated performance for such a moving beat. As someone’s who’s been a fan of kaytramine since the early beat tapes, I’m still waiting for him to drop a focused album with performances that match how great his production is.

Sorry if it feels spammy but there's this really really really underrated EP called Babaganush by a Brazilian underground rapper named Yung Vegan, he's a true intelectual, splicing artistic references and making commentary on art and society in his rap, it's not really conscious rap but it's something similar He got more famous recently for his newest album Fetiche but Babaganush is probably his lyrical masterpiece, It's only 12 minutes long but I for sure listened to it for hours on loop and I still find myself thinking about the lyrics, It's the type of thing I personally think you'd enjoy by how you interact with music and lyrics unfortunately since he's a very underrated artist, a couple songs don't have any english translations out there but I'd be more than glad to translate the two songs myself (I have experience with translating The Boondocks comics to Brazilian Portuguese) if needed
