Thank you for this review, Professor, especially given our current reality where perversion is being used to manufacture consent for the dehumanization of the LGBTQ community. I have immense respect for Ethel Cain and what she stands for and is attempting to do as an artist on this new album, and I appreciate you meeting her on those terms. AVAA. ... also, I do believe the sex pillows you are referring to are called dakimakura in anime and anime-adjacent communities. Assuming you are referring to long pillows with an anime girl pin-up on them, which is what I assumed given that this is usually what is meant by "sex pillow". I hope this knowledge that I have picked up exclusively from being entirely too online during my formative years is helpful, apologies if not 🫡

AVAA. That line about hate comes almost verbatim from I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. The comparison between AM, a sadistic and simultaneously tragic man-made anti-man and the simulacrum of inhuman evil and inversion created to denounce trans people especially, is worth a ponder, I think. AM especially feels like the ultimate "pervert," someone who became their own shadow, and as horrifically cruel as he was, he didn't ask to be created, and when he turns his back on humanity and takes his eternal revenge, you can almost sympathize. He was a budding consciousness trapped in a cold, empty machine built by a thousand evil hands for a hundred evil purposes, most of which are long since lost in translation by the time the story begins. He was not wrong to hate. Even if my comparison doesn't entirely fit, the recontextualization of that line is still very interesting. Smiley face!

AAVA - this is very very much my kind of music, this is most likely going to be my aoty tbh .... i loved preacher's daughter, and i was so excited in the run-up to this release. between punish, the length of the tracks, and what my bsf (who is ethel obsessed and has been for years) was telling me about them - i knew it would be very much in my lane. but i was still surprised how much i love it. the influences i can hear on this album are some of my absolute favs, and they feel so strong but it is still so entirely it's own thing. i could nerd out about the composition all day, or i could disappear from my head for a whole day. realising it was a hurdy gurdy on pulldrone made me unreasonably excited. my favourite track is either pulldrone, thatorchia or onanist. i haven't really even looked too much into the lyrics cus as a trans woman filled with shame, i slightly fear them :,)
