GREAT point about how "female" rappers have to do SO MUCH just to be recognized and to compete with the boys. There's so many male artists that literally do the bare minimum and get so much praise.

Another thing I’d like to mention is she is EXTREMELY versatile. She has 4 main types of genres she plays with. She can do boom bap introspective rap as seen in this mixtape and her ep braless, there’s house/club music doechii as scene in her song Alter Ego, MPH and persuasive, she can do alt rap rock like in her songs crazy swamp bitches(highly recommend)and pacer, she can do alt rap like in spookie coochie, and yucky blucky fruitcaale “very weird but love it” and finally there’s pop song doechii which you can see in rocket and the infamous song What it Is which was her biggest tik tok hit however this was what made her mainstream and as much as doechii loves to sing she hated how the general public only saw her as a singer and not a rapper which is what she got singed to TDE for
@Mark.mp32 ай бұрын
YESSSSS. What a pleasant surprise! Doechii is the future.
@loveshot982 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say she rose to fame because of TikTok, she was already well known in the alternative rap scene, but when she dropped "What It Is", it reached mainstream audience and charts, and it also became viral on TikTok, which made sense because it is a heavily saturated Pop song. Her other song that went viral on TikTok is called Yucky Blucky Fruitcake - it is probably one of her realest and best songs, but it went viral as a challenge where people used a certain part of the song to show their transformation as they became adults, as well as by trans people to show their growth and transformation to finally presenting as who they always felt like. Great analysis and review, you got a new subscriber!

Insecure has some of the best Music Supervisors in the game. Raphael Saddiq and Solange Knowles each filled the role at different points in the shows tenure. TDE is producing such genuine, authentic, quality music because as Doechii said in a 2022 Elle interview, they give their artists a lot of freedom and they are not rushed. She had time to create the project they wanted ❤

Great review, Professor! Doechii really did something amazing here. As for 27:48 we do actually have an answer in her Rolling Stone interview. Here’s the q n a for you: I see some people online speculating that “Denial is a River” is a callback to a Wendy Williams clip. Did that influence the title at all? Yes. “Denial is a river in Egypt. Your husband is gay.” That is so funny. Over the weekend, I was also really surprised to learn that some people thought that part of “Denial is a River” is transphobic, in reference to lyrics where you describe a man that you were dating cheating on you with another man after you had incorrectly assumed he was cheating with a woman. Have you heard that backlash? No, I haven’t, but I think that if you read too deeply into it, then you could probably misconstrue it as that. But no, I’m saying that I was assuming he was cheating on me with a girl, and then I saw that he was cheating on me with a man and I realized that my man was DL. That’s really it. I hope it interests you!
@theressak2 ай бұрын
Thanks!! That's wild about it being a reference to Wendy. And my thoughts is if you look too deeply into anything you can find something "offensive ". This MT was EVERYTHING!! My introduction to Doechii and after almost a week of listening to Alligator bites never heal I'm finally diving into everything she's in.
@Likeicare962 ай бұрын
Yeah, I understand why people would think that because it’s unfortunately a pretty tense time for the trans community. But Doechii is very much an ally, so I definitely read it at the most charitable light

AVAA I’d say Queen latifah was a lot more influential than she gets credit for. Her and the jungle brothers mixed hip hop with house in 89, and she went out of her way to show the queer culture of ballroom in an era of hip-hop rife with homophobia. Doechii’s hip house style wouldn’t exist without her

I was about to comment saying "doechii's not a tiktok musician she just had a song go viral on it" then you mentioned denzel and i realized i sounded like older rap fans when i was a teenager listening to soundcloud rap, just because it started out on something new doesnt mean that's a bad thing. Gotta check myself sometimes and remember I'm getting older
@dually812 ай бұрын
Age is undefeated. Now imagine how we felt defending the viability of rap as genre in the '80s and '90s... LoL The older R&B fans didn't even consider rap real music!!! It's funny because guys like Run-D.M.C and NWA went through a lot of hate for their fans to grow older and become critical and dismissive of new music.

I love that you appreciate this brilliant album and what makes it so important. I was really disappointed by Fantano's review. You should listen to "flunky monkey" it's very much in the same raw, autobiographical introspective vein. It's actually called Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, named after a book she read as a child, because the song is about her experience growing up. Apparently it's part of a series of kids books about a rebellious girl and she related to the main character's spirit. It's not a novelty track or Tiktok sound

She's expressed a lot in the past the difficulties she's had with balancing what her label wants from her but also feeding her artistry. And i feel like this mixtape was the perfect solution for what she's been dealing with. It's taken some of that mighty weight off her, but also fed her creative soul at the same time. So proud of her, and can't wait for more from her.
