As a linguist I wish more people understood this. Knowing more than more language is already a huge sign of intelligence as is, even if you don’t know the second language „perfectly”. If you know it enough where you can be feasibly understood? That’s already amazing and something you often have to learn on your own.

Hmmm... Linguistical inteligence is a type of inteligence, but there are other types of inteligences, like mathematical, manual abilities, sportive, visual, auditive, empirical, empathetic, emotional, even aesthetical. I don't even speak english, but as speaker of an european language, I improvise something in english. There are even very intelligent speechless people. Today to speak english is relevant, but in the past other languages ruled, like spanish in Latin Amarica, or to speak french in most of Africa. Africa is the place with the greatest diversity of languages in the world, they live together with a lot of people talking different languages, then is very common africans speaking more than 3 or 4 idiomas, but there are places where is spoke only one language, then people haven't contact with other languages to learn them.

I have a similar problem but with another language. I speak two languages fluently which are romanian and english and I moved to Italy few months ago to stay with my family. When I came here I knew nothing about Italian, I had to start classes right away, and in few months I learned how to maintain simple conversations and understand what the person is saying (also since romanian is pretty close to italian) of course, my vocabulary is not perfect and because of that resulted in me being discriminated or be known as dumb because I'm not used to some behaviours that for the italian is considered normal and expressions although me and the other person can pretty much understand eachother's needs. What I realized is unless the other person does not relate to something or have a similar experience they won't even care about the hardship, they just see the first seconds and they'll make a judge about it. I got lucky because I finally got friends rhat understand me even if most of them aren't romanian or english and we get along pretty well. So in conclusion, don't think that just because a person doesn't speak properly it means that they are illiterate because high chances are they're probably good at another language.

I am now 37 years old and I have been practicing English nonstop for over 25 years, but I still haven’t mastered it! I know that I will never 100% master it, because it evolves way too fast (especially with the internet/social media connecting the world) and there are countless variations of it-depending on the location, accent, culture, slang, historical demographic (and many other factors) of the specific English speaking region. I make at least a dozen or more mistakes every single day, yet I have 2 doctorates from top American universities (not that traditional education/degrees are the only way to gauge intelligence, it’s simply the easiest personal example I have at hand). It’s just a really difficult language to learn and it isn’t always easy for our brains to quickly translate the words we want to read/write/hear/say, back and forth from our mother tongue, to English (especially if you have severe dyslexia like I do…it can take a hot minute sometimes.😂) Thankfully I have never heard anyone be rude about my mistakes in real life (the internet isn’t a good representation of humanity, so I never let online rudeness affect me/my mood). People have always been very kind, patient, respectful and helpful when I mess up, or am struggling with something in their language. Every native English speaker I’ve ever met are typically very proud and flattered that someone put so much time/effort into learning their language and they are always excited to help people gain a deeper understanding of it. I’m extremely sad and sorry that you have had negative experiences. 😔💔

I know you didn't mention it but I think it's ridiculous whenever people expect learning English for people who didn't learn it as a first language to be easy. The English language is basically five other languages stacked on top of each other in a trench coat and they're trying to get into an r-rated movie even though they aren't old enough to. It's what happened whenever German greek latin and several other languages all started mixing together. It's extremely complicated and I feel like people who grew up speaking English as their first language take it for granted thought they were taught English while their brain was still really young and pliable because as you get older it gets harder. It especially astonishes me because there's so many people who speak English as a first language who complain that they could never learn certain other languages because they're so difficult, but they don't let people from those cultures have the same opinion about English even though it is just as difficult if not more. plus whatever makes you feel better just know that there are a lot of people in the UK and America and other English-speaking countries that aren't super good at English either. There are a lot of uneducated people in the world and they don't have the right to talk smack about others who were not brought up the same way they were. In my opinion though I think that your English is great, and your accent is very charming. I like the way you talk. I don't understand why others need to be so critical.

I never understood this notion! You have to me pretty smart to even kind of pick up another language good enough to communicate, and English is a tough one to do!

I couldn't agree with you more...and it's not just the ability or inability to speak English, it is also the fact that we will not all be able to speak English or any language with an "English" accent if that makes sense Hi there from South Africa, where the use of one's mother tongue is highly promoted. Here, 11 Languages are recognized as official languages with the "Sign" language about to be added as the 12th. English is our business language and a "compromise" language where two or more people aren't able to converse in either of the 10 languages. Sometimes you may find two people from different language groups having a conversation, each using their own language or switching between languages without disrupting the conversation....This may be hard to comprehend for those outside of South Africa but it is something that most of us have come to get used to. I have only come across one of your videos on my feed and as someone who grew up in a village in South Africa, much similar to your surrounding village, I applaud you for embracing your village life. We do not often realize that growing up but, village life makes you appreciate a lot of things that many may take for granted Keep it up - new subscriber here 😉

We agree. Some of the brightest people I've met are people who struggle with English. Not to mention, speaking more than one language is healthy for your brain.
