Many times I’ve started watching an episode, and many times I turn it off with a “f-you” or “easy for you to say,” etc….(some kind of internal resistance here, I assume)…and I’ve been turned off by “hustler” types (resistance and jealousy perhaps…haha) but after one week of being fully sober, something in listening to this one felt like many small light bulbs starting to turn on and inspires me to want to stay the course. Thank you both for doing what you do. 🤘💜🤘

The antidote to addiction is not sobriety, it's connection.

Acceptance and honesty lead to connection
@lindaw.58366 ай бұрын
I completely agree. Addiction is loss of connection to yourself and eveything/everyone else. Therefore sobriety is a connection to yourself and/or something/someone else. It's the ability to be open to it is the difficult thing.

Really enjoyed this conversation! Thank you both! It’s crazy because addiction has no prejudice. It can take a hold of anyone, from any place, at any age, from any background. Finding a way out, which looks different for everyone, is a beautiful thing. Even though it’s hard work and requires commitment, but so worth it. I commend everyone who’s made that transition and for those that are in the struggle, it starts with a decision to want something different, then doing something different. One love ❤️

I hope you and your children are okay? How did he die if you don't mind me asking? My husband died a year ago, he took his life but he was addicted to alcohol and said he couldn't see a way out of it. I couldn't see a way forward a year ago and wanted to end my life on the 22nd of August last year. Luckily, I didn't and now a year on my life is completely different, I have a new job as an alcohol recovery coordinator, I'm moving into a new house on the 22nd of August (which I've just realised is the same date) I have a new healthy relationship and I'm actually happy, which felt impossible just a year ago.

@@MegaMia1000 Thank you. Yes we are all managing as well as can be expected. I am deeply sorry to hear of your husband‘s troubles and for the loss of that connection/relationship. Sounds like you’re using all of this pain/tragedy as fuel to help build your momentum forward which is awesome! He suffered from addiction (it’s why we were estranged for the last 15+ years) He had recently gotten clean, and had about six months sobriety. In the last 10 days of his life, he went back to his hometown to help care for his father and ultimately, relapsed. He did lots of good things in the first several days before using again. Medical examiner says: “accidental” fentanyl overdose” We’re still waiting on the full toxicology report.

Compelling listening Rich, thanks! [A relevant quote comes to mind when I think about your question - is there a need to discover the reasons for addiction in order to effect recovery. The quote reads - "Forget the past, for it is gone from your domain. Forget the future, for it is beyond your reach. Control the present. Live supremely well now. It will whitewash the dark past and compel the future to be bright. This is the way of the wise." That was from Paramahansa Yogananda].

Its not about addiction, but I'm long without any idea what could help my brother. He's very anxiousely, living without electricity and Water, because of an unkown amount of debts and would need a special diet because of "sugar sickness". He's responsible for everything what he's living like now, and we don't know how to help. 3 years no Word no see anymore. I wish something like these Rock bottom stories would Wake him up, but he's not really able to look in the mirror and try. He was not vaccinated while Corona, because he was too afraid and just stayed Home. Like it still is 😢

This episode of Rich Roll is yet more proof that these AA-type programs don't really work all that well. Think about how many times addicts who attend something like AA relapse before getting it right. The statistics I've been able to find show that AA is successful 1.5% of the time (damn, that's not even 2%). I've also seen it as high as 10%. "Successful" is defined as still being sober five years after attending your first meeting. Think about how many meetings are filled with newbies, with only a very small handful of old-timers. It's an organization that has never gone through scientific/medical testing. I'm surprised that Rich Roll never mentions a lack of focus on nutrition for ex-addicts. These meetings are typically comprised of three things: 1) Usually a table of fatty, animal-laced, sugary doughnuts; 2) cups and cups of coffee; and 3) chain smokers. There's no emphasis on food and nutrition. No discussion on whole-foods, entirely plant-based eating that is low in fat, no oils, low in processed sugars, low in sodium. There's also no emphasis on routine exercise. David Manheim said it himself, which is that you're really ready to quit drugs/alcohol when YOU (and only you yourself) are ready to quit. Until then, AA is useless.
