Train of Thought being in C tier is a crime against humanity. It’s my favorite by far and not coincidentally their most Metal album. I describe it as what happens when DT turn DOWN the prog and turns UP the metal…and that’s just fine by me. Disclaimer: I have complicated relationship with prog. I come to prog Metal via 80’s Iron Maiden, Fates Warning and most importantly Queensrÿche. So I’ve always struggle with the Proggy side of of prog Metal. 🤷🏼♂️🤘🏼

Happy to see Falling Into Infinity in that tier. It was so ahead of the technical prog sensibilites at that time that even the band wasn't prepared for it. I agreed so much with Portnoy that they needed a break to get a fresh take. Everything since has been so stale, with only a few good highlights. Then every once in a while I'll throw on older DT, and just remember why i fell in love with this type of music. Their other stuff had so much more heart and creativity. The Astonishing is one of my favorites albums by any band. Dream Theater is my favorite band. I have every album of course and I don't understand why this album gets so much hate. Yeah it's very different for a Dream Theater album. It doesn't have a lot of metal in it. Yes it's probably a bit longer than it should be. But it's one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard in my entire life. I would have to put it in S tier with Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory. It's a very mature and different direction for my favorite band and I think it pretty much blows away any Ayreon album as much as I really like Ayreon.

In the end not a completely crazy tier list for DT. FII is pretty high in A-tier but I wouldn’t rank it lower than B. FII is definitely DTs most under appreciated album. I would have included A Change of Seasons in this and it would be B tier for me as well. ACoS is one of the only 20+ minute “songs” I actually like. Train of Thought is S tier from me but I can see this being a polarizing album. The more prog leaning fans wouldn’t like it as much but the pure “metal-heads” like me were waiting for this album. Train of Thought is A, what a crime... You ve got to ignore this wild card. And Awake is the best álbum of DT. This guy Geoff cant judge alone. Im sorry to tell you that, I usually respect anyones opinion, but this two álbuns being so low would hurt me so much. Its about style, I know. And thanks to Daniel.for doing some repair on this.

Honestly I’m a nice person … just not a fan of ToT!!!

Look, I didnt mean to be disrespectfull . It was not my intention. Maybe ia the heavy side of the band, perhaps you really dont like It. However, its a big important side of their sound. By the way, I liked your comments in the Yes contest.

S - Images and Words - Metropolis Pt. 2 - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence A - Awake - Train of Thought - Black Clouds & Silver Linings B - Falling Into Infinity - Octavarium - Systematic Chaos C - Dream Theater - The Astonishing - A View From the Top of the World D - Distance Over Time - A Dramatic Turn of Events - When Dream and Day Unite

Agree with most of this, but someone needs to explain the hate for Distance Over Time to me. It's always been my favorite Mangini era album.

SC and ToT are A, easy. FiI can go to B, given it is not as close as Dream Theater prog style... but I love the album.

51:45 & 53:57 - Kyle, Misunderstood isn't the song on Six Degrees where the DJ scratches are. Wanna know where they are? F***ing Glass Prison. That's where.

Thanks for doing DT, been a fan since 92 and they are my favourite band, my favourite album is A VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD, for me there is no other band that comes close to the amount of QUALITY songs they have produced ❤❤❤

And the fact that they're still putting out relevant material this far into their career is a testament to how incredible they are!

I think that when you bump an album without using the wildcard, you should only be able to move it up or down 1 tier, this way it would take multiple votes to drastically shift the order.

I agree with miuch of this. Here's mine (I should make a video. I already did a SONGS list video a few months ago). S: Awake, Images and Words, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence A: Scenes from a Memory, B: Falling Into Infinity (this would be A is you include the Cleaning out the Closet Tracks), When Dream and Day Unite, Train of Thought C: Octavarium, Black Clouds and Silver Linings, A Dramatic Turn of Events, Distance Over Time D: Systematic Chaos, Dream Theater Haven't Heard in full: The Astonishing and A View from the Top of the World, although I suspect both would go in D.

If the record company hadn't meddled with Falling Into Infinity, it would have been better. No doubt about that.
@AllMediaReviewsPodcast Жыл бұрын
@@KyleFagala yeah. I feel like songs such as Raise the Knife, The Way It Used to Be and Speak To Me, are actually better than nearly every track on FII. But I guess that's why those did get released, most recently on the Lost But Not Forgotten stuff.

rough to watch a bunch of guys who really don't care much for metal to rank a prog metal band's albums

15. Falling Into Infinity 14. When Dream And Day Unite 13. Black Clouds And Silver Linings 12. Systematic Chaos 11. Dream Theater 10. Octavarium 09. Train Of Thought 08. Si Degrees Of Inner Turbulence 07. The Astonishing 06. A View From The Top Of The World 05. Distance Over Time 04. Awake 03. Images And Words 02. A Dramatic Turn Of Events 01. Scenes From a Memory

How Falling Into Infinity not only got into A tier but also was never considered for a bump is beyond my understanding. It's not D tier but come on guys, you put Train of Thought below it? Here's the correct ranking: S: SFAM, I&W, Awake A: ToT, 6DOIT Everything else is lower but the order is up for debate. Also WDADU gets way too much hate, at least the band sounds like they've got something to prove on that album.

I've tried a couple times to make it through this video, but I just keep stopping it to listen to an album.

First time on the channel - this was great and a lot of fun with the wheel! Now that I'm here, I thought I'd tell you a funny story. I first heard of Dream Theater when I saw the video for Pull Me Under on Headbangers Ball when it came out. I was so excited about this new sound and this new band and how hard that song was that I went out and bought the cassette of Images And Words, and I couldn't wait to hear more of what this killer new band sounded like! I had a bunch of my metalhead friends over, and we sat down in the living room to listen to the whole album together for the first time. Pull Me Under kicks it off. Everybody's just stoked on it. And then... Another Day comes on and the embarrassment on my face when I had to explain why Kenny G (cause duh it sounded like him so of course my friends thought that) was on a metal album - the mortified feeling I had was so intense that I didn't listen to Dream Theater again or play that album all the way through until the late 2000s. True story!

Thanks for checking it out. Funny story. But opposite for me. I loved that a metal band used a sax on a song. Thought it was so different. 😀

Dudes! When WDADU came out, l was working at a record store on Long Island, New York. A coworker of mine knew MP and was good friends with him. The WHOLE band came down to the store to sign the display that she had made in the store. I remember the five cats arriving, all dressed in all black. They probably signed something for me, maybe my CD or a poster. So, since l was there from (basically) the get go, l have a particular fondness for their debut record. I also saw the late, great Charlie Dominici play a full show live with the boys as well. Living in NY, I’ve seen a lot of classic DT shows and special events. I was at the infamous Steve Stone show at Sundance, the acoustic trio show at Mulcahy’s Pub in Wantagh, the Score show at Radio City Music Hall, etc. l plan on doing a show on this on my tiny, little, small potatoes 🥔 channel in the near future. I’ll leave you with the fact that MP sent me an advance cassette of I&W, months before it officially came out. That’s because he knew how much l loved the debut release, especially “Only a Matter of Time.” Somewhere in my rather voluminous collection, l still have that audio cassette tape. Time to watch your tier ranking of my fave all time act, YES! Keep up the funky, fresh work. Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍏 Rock Out & Prog On… … in each and every lexicon! Your pal and mine, ~ The Dreaded, Shredded and Unleaded Davey Cretin from CRETIN CLASSICS.

Distance Over Time is an exceptional album. Underrated dude…. So many good solos, melodies, and sounds. “Barstool Warrior” and “Fall Into the Light” are exceptional songs…… It’s also a pretty heavy album. I love that album. I like it more then metropolis part 2. I barely like that one. It has too many soft moments and just didn’t do it for me. We all hear music differently I guess. At least we all love Dream Theater; that’s all that matters. Systematic Chaos is amazing, you guys are tripping …it deserves at least “A” tier. Images and Words belongs in “S” for sure. Awake is amazing so, A tier is fine. Train of Thought is amazing and deserves “A” or “S” tier. Just my opinions.

Systematic Chaos is a weird one. Not a top tier album, but has some God tier moments. Ministry of Lost Souls has my favorite guitar b8t of any DT song. But it is hard to take moments s whole albums
