Years ago, we spent a month in Progreso and agree with your review 100%. We loved the ruins and the cenotes and the people could not have been nicer. The ruins close to town (Dzibichaltun) were small but wonderful and I was the only one in the cenote when we were there (they no longer permit swimming there.) Thanks for the accurate reporting!

Reykjavik, Iceland. This place is awesome. You can see volcanos, see were North American tectonic plates and Europe tectonic plates are separating, glaciers, geysers, and some amazing waterfalls. It is well worth the money to go there.

Good info Jason. I think a lot of cruisers are very naive when they travel to other countries. They expect everything to look like the created ports of call. I’d rather see the real stuff at places I visit. And your family is great! Your kids seem delightful. 😊

We stopped in Progresso 8 years ago on a Carnival cruise and had a great time. Went on an excursion to some ruins then walked around town. People were nice. To me it seemed pretty chilled but I've been to some pretty rough places.

We did Progresso a few years ago on the Carnival Breeze with our son (in his 20s) and we all LOVED it! We did the Uxmal Ruins all day excursion and it was magical and barely any people. Chichen Itza we did a few years before that on a land tour and rental car for the night, and did an all day there with a guide. What amazing stuff! People should not go there just to sit at a beach club and drink, just stay on the ship if that's all you want. The Yucatan is all about the Mayan people and culture, and we love it.

Really appreciate you sharing your firsthand experience in Progresso and addressing concerns or complaints people have about it. I have cruised the eastern Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera. I also did a three day cruise that included San Diego, Catalina Island and Enseñada. I stayed on the ship in San Diego, because I lived in southern California and had visited there many times. But I very much enjoyed Catalina. I had been there before on private sail boat and the day trip boats. But taking a cruise ship and then renting a golf cart with a few friends and driving around the island was a lot of fun. Last September I did a Greek Isle cruise. My favorite islands were Hydra and Rhodes. Visiting the port in Kusadasi Turkey to visit the ruins in Ephesus was also amazing.

I saw the yellow Convento and want to recommend Izamal as a place to visit. There are Mayan pyramids throughout the small city. Most are small but Kinich Kakmo is large and you can see Chichen from the top across the jungle canopy. There is the Kinich restaurant at the base where you can see Mayan ladies making tortillas while you dine on good food. The horse-drawn carriages are a special treat. I used them all the time when I lived there.

Progresso is one port that we haven’t been to yet and after watching the video yes I want to go. It looks like fun right now. My favorite cruise port is Aruba. We did a cuckoo cuckoo excursion. It’s a bus with no windows on every seat. There are maracas they drop us off at the beach for three hours, and a short tour it was a blast the buses painted with all funny sayings. It was an old school bus. I highly recommend it.

Thank you for sharing!!! I've honestly never been to any "bad" port in my opinion. There is always something fun or wonderful to do no matter where you go even if its just to experience some great food. We also like to go off the beaten path and try to experience something new every time we cruise. We have been to Progresso once and did Chichen Itza, we want to visit Merida next time we go.... rated the safest city in Mexico. Best cruise port is a difficult one to choose..... so far, I would say Oranjestad Aruba. We didn't do anything booked through Carnival, I did a lot of researching since this was a journeys cruise, we bought a day pass to Flamingo island and enjoyed feeding and lounging with flamingos in a beautiful private coved beach and we took a cab to Zeerover's restaurant and had some seriously fresh and lush seafood... fantastic port! Truly enjoy your videos btw 😊

We enjoyed Progresso. Very nice people we got turned around and they helped. We got a massage on the beach I bought a really nice travel bag a lady there made( I watched her make them. ) food was good. We never felt unsafe. Actually felt more un easy in New Orleans before we left.

I visited there in 2021, but it was part of a tour and I was staying in Merida. The town seemed to be taking advantage of the pandemic to build itself up for when the pandemic ended. Had a great shrimp ceviche. As for best cruise port, as I have only taken one cruise, it would be Sitka - saw bald eagles, humpback whales, otters, orcas, and bear snagging salmon right out of the water.
@princessconsuelabananahamm1571Ай бұрын
You’re right. Progreso is a safe little beach town that hasn’t changed much since it began receiving cruise ships, it’s near to Merida, the safest city in Mexico. Might not be pretty or touristy but it’s interesting nonetheless.
@tomjones4986Ай бұрын
Been to Progresso twice on a cruise ship. Both times we went into Merida, much better option, but the street vendors are a little pushy. There is a Cathedral that dates back to the 1500's.
@BrokenaliceАй бұрын
I appreciate you highlighting what the area has to offer and I'm glad you felt safe and welcome, but you are likely to have a completely different outlook than your everyday tourist who may not feel as comfortable in foreign environments. I think travelling as a large family you are safer because you are all together and not likely to separate. If you were just a couple or a solo traveller you may have felt differently in regards to safety. If you were a more generic-tourist and not as "worldly as you and your spouse, you may have felt differently.

Good review. The real Mexico or any port in the Caribbean is one thing I miss when cruising now days. Company ports are not how it really is. I see Progesso being " real Mexico" as a plus. It's proximity to Merida can satisfy any need for gringo expectations. Glad you focused on that area. There are many off the beaten path Mayan ruins, Edzna is amazing and uncrowded. Only Palenque and Calakmul surpass it, in my experience. BTW. There are two rivers in that area, Rio Candalaria and Rio Chompoton.
