I used to ride massive amounts and ran into so many overuse and imbalance injuries. Now after doing full body, full range of motion weight training 3x a week I'm injury free. I also do a full body warm up before every ride, religiously adhered to. If you want to perform at an athlete level you have to train like one, your whole body must be balanced and strong to go the distance. Then picking tracks that scare you and slowly unlocking the lines and ramping up the speed as you memorize everything, once everything is memorized then all focus is on pushing the physical limits and techniques. In combination of riding tons of different terrain, every hard trail has things to teach you, then with wide experience comes intuitive trail reading. Honestly most people don't do repeats on hard tracks enough to really push it, you have to be obsessive.

I like your comment on memorizing the trails. Knowing a trail makes a lot of sense in pushing yourself. My two local trails I ride multiple times a week... I know them inside and out. I recently just watched MBA's video on cornering ... I've never been able to corner very well. I took what I learned from that video and was able to shred corners after that. Knowing these trails extremely well, I was able to plan ahead for the curves and corners that I knew were coming up, apply the new knowledge and rip through it without a second thought. With each subsequent ride, I am able to keep pushing it harder and I can now focus on that rather than the trail itself. It really does help to know your trails well to get good!

Great video really like mass majority the breakdown. Before I ride, I do my dynamic warm-up routine I built for myself. I do have a degree in exercise science. The one skill that, upon developing, had the largest impact on my overall riding capabilities was: Learning how and when to dynamically weight and unweight each wheel. Unfortunately it was also the one skill that nobody ever told me about or even addressed at all in any way shape or form. And because I had to learn it on my own it took me much longer than it could have. It's the one thing that seemingly EVERY mtb coach, guru, tutorial, skills channel and magazine misses completely! I thought about this a lot and the only explanation I can come up with is that it's SUCH a fundamental and necessary skill that most experienced riders; including all these coaches, gurus, content creators and column writers, don't consciously realize that they are doing it or how often. It's the frequency aspect that makes it so crucial. Riders utilize this skill when cornering, pumping the terrain, manualing, when using advanced cornering techniques like the scandi flick or Endo turn, when preloading the suspension, when jumping, landing, bunny hopping, hitting a drop, braking, climbing . . . You name it. It's the one skill that's all pervasive yet never taught or talked about even.

@@mountainbikeacademy Pending amount of time and amount of weekly efforts, any combination of zones might work based on personal situation, I know. Staying mostly in zone 3 and 4 worked great for me for 2 straight years but I realized that in order to evolve further, I will have to do more zone 2 and strength training. When it goes to warm up, let's be real. No one will do those funny mobility warm ups while bros are watching. Best warm up is your actual work out ...whatever it is but at very low pace and effort. Asking bros to REALLY and ACTUALLY go easy for first couple miles is the best thing we all can do to elevate our performance. All the best

Fitness and flexibility is probably tops. Body position and technique on the bike following that. Shorter cranks is a HUGE factor. People have been riding way too long of a crank for their body size and needs forever as evidenced by industry “standards” of 175mm’s on everything. It’s finally making a ripple in the pond (because GMBN is running out of clickbait), but it’s a worthy deep dive if you are seeking to eliminate knee issues.

What are your thoughts on ATG style training for mountain bikers? I have started to implement those exercises in my routine and have already seen improvements.
@mountainbikeacademy
@mountainbikeacademy 7 ай бұрын
It’s a great philosophy. Problem is most mountain bikers can’t do basic basic movement patterns. We are mostly engineers, doctors, nerds, and risk takers not methodical body taker carers. Obviously there’s plenty of real athletes too. I had severe back pain, muscle fusion, pinched nerves, arthritis, etc from high school football injuries. My body wasn’t tough, my ligaments would constantly pull. Once I figured out how to “bulletproof” my body at around age 34-35 I was actually a better performing athlete. 100 percent credit goes to my brother in law who is the movement coach in MTB academy. Hes got a master degree in sports medicine and bachelor’s in exercise science. Our biggest thing is 1. KZbin is here to encourage and shift beliefs 2 membership program offers more personalized plans / riding coaching 3. Flagship program is elite 1-1 transformation Hope that helps. I’ll prob do an episode on this too. Thank you!

@@mountainbikeacademyAwesome. I’m 35 and it took me until this year to start taking mobility/flexibility seriously and incorporate a more “athletic” style approach to my training. I guess age started to catch up, as I was getting plagued with random back strains, neck/upper back pain, etc. Hopefully the young guys are paying attention. I wish I had the knowledge in my early 20s.

As a 49.75 year old software engineer of 25 years, who was also a road bike rider for most of that time, my issue is the meeting place of coordination and functional strength. If I'm watching POV videos of a top rider, I can "feel" my body wanting to move how it should move. Put me on a trail, and the timing is off, I ask my body for one output and get another...and at the wrong time. I can juggle 3 balls no problem, solve a 9x9 cube no problem, could ride my road bike up Alp d'huez, but riding a mountain bike fast has been a problem. The punishment for failing of course is painful, and I have finally realized I have to address most of these areas you have talked about here. It's not enough to have "enudrance" (which I get a chuckle out of the characterization, coming from the road bike world).

@@mountainbikeacademysuggesting doing an absurdly high number of reps to compensate for not having weight is a recipe for disaster instead of adding on ridiculous number of reps that wear down on ligaments and cartilage you could simply control speed and focus or perform static exercises that equally strengthen without the use of weights. But to suggest doing extremely high number of reps is just as detrimental as going too heavy with weights that compromise structural integrity and longevity. I’ll say it again you’re clearly not a trainer and having a degree in a field means you’re educated not intelligent. There are several ways to train but I will say most of the video is spot on just some of your suggestions are counter intuitive especially if the goal is to last long in these high impact sports like motocross or mountain biking.

@@chrisvillarreal2752 so we shouldn’t pedal lots then? Look I don’t want to argue online because you seem like a smart person capable of nuanced thought. Thing is- this is just a KZbin video. If you actually need coaching DONT follow this video like it’s coaching. KZbin is KZbin. When we coach, we have a very high instance of writing in 100-300 lunges (no weight) 1-2x a week. Using great form, this is a superb exercise for mountain bikers who sit at a desk too much during the week. So again this is based on working with middle aged riders. We obviously don’t want you hurting yourself lol. Out of curiosity, do you have a degree or certification in anything related to working out? Promise I won’t knock you down if you don’t, just genuinely happy to explain our position! Merry Christmas !

@@mountainbikeacademy also have bachelors of science in exercise science and certifications on top of that although that’s irrelevant when compared to the common sense reality of over training. Having any middle aged person doing 300 lunges a session is overkill when there are several alternatives that are scientifically proven to be effective for strength. Most common injury with bikers are ankle, achilles, and knee due to that very principle of over training and over use.
