A traditional hanten is padded, which is why the sleeves seem big. We lived in Japan in the 1980s, and I brought my hanten back to the US because I loved it so much. It kept me so warm inside in the winter. I redid the padding once (the original cotton didn’t hold up to washing over the years), but eventually the outer fabric wore away. This has inspired me to make one, now that we have retired to a old stone farmhouse in NW Spain; a hanten will be perfect in the winter!

Kate as a seamstress, the reason why coats and jackets have linings of a ‘slippery’ fabric with few seams in is for ease of wear. They make wearing the jacket and taking on and off much easier. The jacket will be heavy as it is of denim anyway so a nylon or silk lining will not add much weight. Love times spent listening to you xx

Hi, Kate. I just discovered your channel today and started watching. I also subscribed. I watched the video about Norma, and shed some tears. I had a tabby cat named Toby, who lived for almost 21 years. And a black cat, named Lucky, who lived almost 20 years. I miss them very much, but now we have Lily, who walked up in our yard a few years ago, as a tiny kitten and stole my heart. She was covered with fleas and had runny eyes. We fed her and gave her flea baths before we took her to the vet for her shots and check-up. She is asleep in my lap right now. She is adorable and I hope she lives a long time too. Thanks for sharing Norma's story and how special she was. She lives on in your heart. I will be watching your videos-there are alot of them. I know I will enjoy them. I sure enjoyed your trip to the candle factory. Pam Miller in USA-Alabama

This is a great idea! I’ve always loved the idea of making art out of our clothing, I’ve been working on a denim jacket I picked up at a yard sale. I’ve been embroidering it in a few places, and I have some ideas for altering it and adding some patches. Some years ago I had an elderly neighbor who inspired me when she used her long coat as a canvas, and began wearing this beautifully painted coat everywhere. She told me she had run out of canvases and happened to see her coat hanging nearby, and voila, art. What a zest for life she had. I will continue to watch with interest as you work on your jacket.

I've made several boro bags for my friends using old blue jeans and Japanese cotton pieces. I'm now trying for a jacket but unlike yours I'm using a very old jean work jacket that was my father-in-law's. It is quite worn but I think that's a lovely thing. I've assembled the materials but not started as I've been on a book tour with my first novel, so rather busy! I have another few readings this summer but need something different to be engaged in. My garden needs some serious time too! I'm only seventy and living my life backwards so lots to do yet. I'd like to live in a garret in Paris and focus on mystery but maybe not quite yet. Ain't life grand! Oh, and I like the big sleeves absolutely! You'll know when it's done. No worries.

Rita (Cat) is very helpful, taking over from dear Norma. So glad you have her and share the story with all of us. She's very beautiful. I have a Calico Tortoiseshell, Megsie, who gave birth to 5 kittens on my bed some years ago. She'd been given to me, so I didn't think about getting her desexed, and one day she suddenly produced tiny kittens! I was taken totally by surprise. Now have Megs and two of her kittens.

You’re doing wonderful design work! As other people have commented, I agree that, yes, the more stitching you do, the prettier. As a long-time art-to-wear maker and longer-time garment maker, in case no one has yet suggested this, please be sure to machine stay-stitch all edges of your pieces (lining, too). It’s especially important on curves and bias edges. And with denim being very prone to fraying, and you’re doing a lot of handling of the pieces while handstitching, it’s best to stay-stitch every raw edge. As for the width of the sleeves, that’s a conundrum for sure. What’s popping in my head right now is that they should be narrower, but not by much. To help lessen the bulk of the sleeves, I suggest you line them with “real” lining fabric. You want sleeve lining to be slippery to prevent bunching when you move and bend your arms. I suggest a slippery polyester lining fabric. I also wonder if adding fold-back (sashiko deco-stitched) cuffs to the sleeve ends. Having that additional weight at the ends of the sleeves could be either a wonderful thing or a horrible thing-darn it, another conundrum 😅. You’re inspiring me to nudge my English setter off my lap so I can go mess around in my sewing room❣️❣️❣️

I’ve only recently found your channel, and don’t often comment (being an introvert!), but just wanted to say how very inspiring you are and how much I’ve been loving your videos. I’ve been a quilter for many years now and enjoy doing cross-stitch, simple knitting and gardening too - I gift the things I make to friends and family as I’ve always been dubious that anyone would be willing to pay for a handmade quilt once priced to account for the materials and my time. Quilting cotton is expensive! I’ve just gotten hold of some free (yes free!) Liberty fabric so will be starting on an EPP quilt. So thank you for the inspiration!
