Even more amazing story telling when Cecil loses everyone and washes on shore to the very town he sent out said assignment. The welcome he gets from the locals as well as the elder made it more amazing. You want Cecil to redeem himself and that's his chance. I play this game annually b/c I absolutely love this game. I used to say vii was my favorite, then I said vi was, but I always end up going back to iv. So much greatness in this game.

As someone who has recently been thinking a lot about 4 vs 5 vs 6 (for a Fake Sequelitis which likely won't happen tbh) it is pretty surprising how much I had forgotten about this game. Especially all the fake-outs! I do feel like FF4 was able to get away with big character moments like that because of its linearity though, since it forced those characters to be in the party at a specific time, so those moments could contribute to the overarching story, rather than FF6 which, despite how much I love it, really had to relegate most of those big character moments to side quests that didn't affect the main story all that much. FF5 had it easy since there were only 4 (or 5) characters, but 5 probably has the best gameplay of the entire series. 4 definitely has the best boss theme! I feel like 4's boss theme actually tells kind of a "story" all on its own. It starts out as just pure stress, clashing of chords from one end to the other with fatigue setting in as the chords slowly descend, only for it all to disappear except for the drums and bass, a moment when both parties are clearly stopping to regain their composure. The best part is just after that though, when the strings kick back in. You can really feel the desperation in this section. You thought the moment of rest would help, but maybe it didn't, and the reality of your imminent injuries starts to set in, further exacerbated by how much the game really makes you care about its characters. Of course in the end, you hear the chords gradually start to ascend and just for that moment, victory really feels within your grasp. Maybe it comes, maybe it doesn't, but either way, the transition back to stress city is only a few seconds away. As much as I love 6's boss theme, I do kinda feel like that one was a little too heavy on the "stress" side of things. Like it was basically all stress all the time and didn't really tell a "story" the way that 4's did. Of course that's all subjective. This is why I don't think I'll end up making that video. 'Cause that last paragraph alone would probably be a half a day of editing right there!

I know I'm coming to this very late, but I've only recently discovered you Jared. This is my absolute favorite FF game. Where 6 is the one that is THAT game for you, the one who helped shape your life, this is THAT one for me. Cecil's story, despite where the development ends, is what pushed me to overcome the problems I had in my life at the time. Granted, I was 10 when I played it, but it was really impactful for me. While as an adult, I agree with your critical appraisal of this game, as a child it blew my mind. The music is fantastic, though the story elements are goofy. The gameplay is great. It was the basis of the next 6 FF games, and some other RPGs of the era as well. Overall, I agree with your assessment of the game. And like you said in your FF9 video, "7 is the most important, this one is my favorite, and 9 is the best."

I’ll say this: no Final Fantasy game has ever used the Prologue theme better than FFIV. Hearing it as Cecil picks himself up off the mat for the final boss battle is up there with “You’re Not Alone” from FFIX for the most moving musical moments in the series.

FF4 was the game that made RPG’s click for me. After playing this, I was completely hooked on the genre. It isn’t my favorite of the series, but I will always love this game, flaws and all. And I’m glad that there have been more versions that came out which are more faithful to the original and upping the difficulty. That ol’ original SNES cart will always hold a special place for me. Icằŗūs Kūŗøı FFVI is really Star Wars, too: a main protagonist doesn't know the secret of their lineage and the destiny they'll fulfill, there's an evil empire trying to take over everything and a resistance group opposing them, said evil empire's after sources of unlimited powah, that same main protagonist gets saved by a group of adorable fluffy warriors at one point, a mentor character gets iced by the big bad, some people turncoat to the resistance, the empire's main base gets bodied with the aid of sources of unlimited powah--there's even a literal Star Wars easter egg in the English translation (don't know if it's in the original) if you go to rescue a traitor while dressed as an imperial soldier where she says "Aren't you a little short to be a soldier?"

I wish you'd mentioned Tellah's death, because it's the only death that isn't a fake out, plus it's a tragic tale of an old man so consumed by revenge that despite everyone telling him that he can't handle it he still wastes what's left of his life to take his revenge, then dies and never comes back. OK we see his ghost but he's still dead.

Oblivious I love both, but the World map theme feels so...perfect for this game. It invokes that sense of loneliness and longing. You vs the powerhouse of the world. Very few world map themes nailed it the way FF4 did.

There's one other bonus to playing the DS (3D) remake of FFIV: it ADDS a few scenes that simply weren't in the original game, and these scenes provide fascinating additional character development to the relationship between Cecil and Kain, and the backstory of Golbez as well.

I beat this game at age 7 and it shaped much of my childhood... i prayed at family dinner holding my hands like rosa, cecil and rydia. The graphics were ground breaking in 91 with the mountain back ground and the moon to earth graphics.
