Depends. On a power source, like a voltaic cell (battery) or a welding machine, Anode is negative and Cathode is positive. But on a load, like an electrolytic cell, a diode, a capacitor or anything on DC, really, you're right, Panic.

Cool. A bit of work for something you can setup in a tank/tote in 2 minutes. Depending on what your trying to accomplish, using a premade solution works best with least damage to the piece.

It is isolated by the transformer - first, there is insulation on the primary side to the transformer frame, then it is insulated again from the transformer frame to the secondary wire. Double-insulated. No grounding necessary.

For a big tank, a 1000L pallet container as used for delivery of lots of bulk chemicals, foodstuffs etc is perfect. Already mounted on a base, usually with a supporting metal cage or frame, often with large drain valve in place. I got some that had held a sugar/water mix from a beekeeping / honey farming business.

Instead of bothering with this setup you should just fill the container with HCl 15% and add inhibitor that prevents iron attack (so it only dissolves scale and rust not the actual metal). Room temperature solution will derust parts without additional attack in 30 min - 2 hours, depending on the stage of corrosion.

Use a stainless plate on the negative instead of the mild steel one. It will never rust. You don't need to "move" the rust, you only need to give the oxygen a surface to be attracted to. If the plate was stainless, you'd have harmless oxygen bubbling up from that plate rather than it turning into a bucket of rust every time. Ignore the microscopic amounts of hexavalent chromium that everyone who doesn't understand concentration or ventilation fearmongers about. One inch of stainless welding releases more hex chromium than months of electrolysis.

Fix the sacrificial plates one each side...that's 4 in total... Wire to the positive in PARALLEL...(or in other words as a ring...with both ends coming back to positive)... Having 4 sacrificial anodes like this increases the surface area...and thus the effectiveness of the setup... Be mindful electrolysis rust removal generates hydrogen gas...🇬🇧👍

Very fancy tank setup. Makes my old tub and battery charger look pretty horrible. To improve results on complex parts I have found good results with anodes in each corner. It seems to work better if there is an anode within 'line of sight' of all surfaces and cavities.
@Sodabowski
@Sodabowski 5 жыл бұрын
The problem with electrolysis is that if you leave it for too long you lose metal too,and you still need to act fast after removing the part from the bath or it immediately starts to corrode again. A better solution by far is to use phosphoric acid (and no other acid) : it dissolves the rust and also creates a phosphate layer that protects the metal from further oxidization. Plus it doesn't need an etching primer to be painted. My two cents. Thanks again for the vids, really relaxing and always an idea to take away from them \m/

I would use nano platinum spheres at 30microns forthe electrodes in my extreme electrolysis project. Then I would dc pulse 70kv to 10v at 20ma in a distilled water bath. Electrode distance has to be 50mm or more. Generally your looking for the most suface area on electrodes. This technique I dubbed the Stanley causes a destructive waveform that causes the water molecules to disassociate into HO OH ions

Take care re-purposing Microwave transformers. They are designed to expect a constant high load, and are not designed to run open circuit. Open circuit they run very hot. See the discussion elsewhere on the internet. Adding some turns to the **primary** winding will mitigate the inefficiency/heating issue.
@BrightBlueJim
@BrightBlueJim 4 жыл бұрын
Electrical engineer here: a) transformers don't "expect" anything, and work just fine open-circuit, b) there is considerable load through the electrolyte. Personally, I would just use a 12V battery charger, though.
