Bad voltage regulator not putting out enough charge to the battery to keep the battery light happy. The alternator should always put out 14.3-14.7V with no loads on (radio, wipers, lights, etc.) Then when you put the loads on it should try and keep up with the demand by upping the voltage going to the battery. Looks like your Voltage regulator was under-performing causing the issue - Mechanic/Auto electrician.

Well I've just watched all your corsa vids today. Erm wish I'd watched them earlier. I could have saved you the headache with alternator. I'm an auto-sparky, that particular bosch unit suffer from regulator faults. The exact issue, it charges but the warning light stays on. At least it's sorted now.

I've had an issue with the battery light coming on intermitantly on my Vauxhall Combo 1.3 CDTi for about a week now. Today my battery light came on permanently so I got a new multimeter as mine has packed up. I'm getting 12.5V from battery which drops to 12V when engine is running so it looks like I'll be doing an alternator replacement within the next couple of days!

Your alternator likely had a bad voltage regulator (its internal to the alternator). I had it happen to the Denso one in my Toyota. Although in that case i had noticeable voltage drops while driving but the voltage output at idle was around 14.1V. It could be worse I think on some Chrysler vehicles the voltage regulator is a circuit inside the ECU. So when it goes bad its a new ECU! You should watch ScannerDanner if you want to learn more about electrics. Between Danner, Ivan at PHAD and SMA i'm fairly confident with diagnosing electrical stuff now. Although there is only so much you can do without good information.

You should put the original Sri 1.8 corsage exhaust. That dual exhaust is quite chavy

The problem with these alternators is that a diode from the so called "small bridge" gets shut in the head letting AC from the alternator passing through to the regulator. Sometimes the regulator sets the voltage on the small wire to 0V and the BCM doesn't know that the alternator is broken. Sometimes that voltage remains 13.something and the BCM knows for sure that the alternator is broken and sets the battery light. In both cases it is possible to have a voltage bigger than 12.6V in the system but there is a lot of AC noise in the car which is not OK. The voltage on the small wire should go towards 0V when the engine runs and stay at the batt voltage with the engine off. BTW, when the alternator is broken, sometimes it is moaning like it would have a lot of load on its back.

Well it's a good news that you got that fault fixed,but using a proper diagnostic tool ,would of told you that you got a low voltage fault,as not using a diagnostic tool would be like pissing in the wind,also the exhaust tips needs a good clean as they look so dirty,keep up the good work.

The diodes fail in the rectifying curcuit causing voltage to run back through the battery warning bulb making it light up constantly A fully charged battery should read approx 12.6 v ( 6 cells at 2.1v each) without the engine turning A voltage of around 14.5 v with the engine running

What turns on that battery light in the dash is actually a CAN message from BCM to IPC. If you have a look in the schematics, you will notice that IPC does not have many wires to it. Second, would of been nice for you to measure again the small wire, for all of us to have a reference. I am going to do this for you and post here the results. Third, do you have an opcom? You could of check live data in the BCM to see what the BCM sees. Fourth, if you have electrical questions about Corsa C, you can always ask at corsa-c.ro, I will be happy to help you. Fyi, Corsa C IPC has also oil level warning light possibility, it is a matter to wire the level sensor to the right place at the ECU and ground and some programming needed.

Looking around online it seems that 1.8i corsas aren't hugely common. Is a 1.8 (or even a 2ltr) from a similar year Astra a feasible source for an engine swap?

You should consider pick up an OPCOM on Ebay or Aliexpress. It is a Vauxhall dealer OBD2 diagnostic tool at £10-20 (which you'll required a Laptop running Windows). Just make sure it has the chip PIC18F458. Version will ranges from 1.65 to 1.99 (I had 1.95 which allows me to diagnose Vauxhalls up to and including year 2013). Most of which will comes with a CD that includes the OPCOM driver and the Vauxhall program. Installing it on Windows 10 will be a bit tricky because you'll need to disable "windows 10 driver signature check" in order to install the OPCOM USB driver, but its not rocket science. Google it and you should be fine.

basje1 minimum voltage for a 12 volt battery to charge is 13.8v typically from my experience most cars run at around 14.4 v

Depends on the alternator and vehicle. On that year Vauxhall bitween 13.8-14.4 Is ideal. The battery also plays a part in it.
