This is a straightforward fabrication project in which two pieces of sheet are held in place by three pieces of wire, one of which doubles as a pearl post. It is a great project for building foundation skills of layout, drilling, sawing, fitting, soldering and filing. Be sure to subscribe: bit.ly/2dyBgwT

Hi Melissa a tip for you Instead of glue us very old jewellers use Schellac flakes to join tempory pieces just heat untill liquid sticky and put it on the face that you wish to join warm the gold and it will flow over the surface and press the 2 halves together let cool when finished cutting lightly heat and seperate put in metherlated spirits and the schellac will disolve very quick and more secure that glue REgards Gary

Thanks Melissa! One thing I noticed with your holding the file(s) you are using the contour of the handle and your pointer finger for control, there is a reason for the handle to have that shape and you nailed it! Excellent work all over! Shhhh, Shhhh!

@@ladybird8084 that is where I started also. If you are ever interested, I have a basic soldering workshop online. It is about 6 hours long (36 videos). It takes all the fear out of starting to solder with small projects. If you are interested, it is at melissa muir.com/workshops.

Thanks for the video, very helpful. After soldering the first set of gallery wires to one side, why do we sand down the 1.7mm wires to match the .7mm wire. Seems like we would do all at .7mm and not have to sand. Maybe it will make more sense once I get to that point. I am ready, tomorrow, to saw the pieces out to match the template. 2nd question, how can we size for a specific ring size? Again, thanks for doing the videos - would be so much more difficult to complete otherwise.
@UrBrother_711

I was wondering the same thing when I just saw that step in the video. Why do we have to use thicker wire if we are going to just file it down? Is it just for practice or is there a reason ? I thought at first that maybe it was going to just be wider on the bottom.

Thanks so much for your wonderful videos. SO appreciated. I was wondering if you could help me by giving me a list of good, basic files? Like a lot of beginning metalsmiths, there were soooo many needed tools when I began that I economized and bought "serviceable" tools instead of really good ones. Sad to say my only files are a half-round from Home Depot and 2 cheap sets of the small regular and diamond grit file sets. I've worked hard to learn and improve my metalsmithing skills but these files are certainly not helping me improve! I seriously don't know what size/cut/shape to get. I'd really appreciate any suggestions and your help. Thanks Doreen

@MelissaMuir
@MelissaMuir 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I used a 5/0 blade. It is my go-to blade size. It takes a bit longer on this one because the metal is so thick and the teeth are so small, but I find it is easier for me to turn the corners with the smaller blade.
