I have a fun memory of driving a new 1976 Chevy C65 oil well logging truck from Wichita Falls Tx to Tulsa Oklahoma. It had a 5 speed split shift transmission and air brakes. I remember it was an amazingly powerful and torquey to drive. I will never forget the experience. It cruised at 70 miles per hour with plenty more go power. Great truck and was heavy too. It was owned by Birdwell Division of Seismograph Service Corporation.

good job looking forward to more, being from sask myself i see these tall deck engines often and its good to see them doing something other than rotting on shop floor or out in the back 40 on the ground.

The split rear main seal 366 uses the same flywheel as a split seal 350. I always wanted to turbo that low compression 366. Forged 4 ring pistons were just about indestructable.

In reference your ‘cheap’ loc tite, there are some things you don’t go cheap with on engines; gaskets, sealants and lubricants. Been wrenching for 40 years, been there done that before.

All those dark spots on your flywheel are hot spots where the previous clutch got hot. They've changed the heat treating of the metal and created soft spots. As you went over it with an angle grinder you created something like the surface of the moon. It's ironic that you stressed the importance of using loctite on flywheel bolts so you don't have to take it apart and redo them, when you'll be taking that clutch apart to redo it in a short while anyway because of that lazy shortcut.

It seems like with a straight shift and the low end torque these engines should do pretty good in an old 4wd

just my opinion. That engine has the large oval port heads not peanut ports. So as long as it doesn't have some special tiny valves because its from a dump truck. Common large oval port heads like 781s have 2.19 intakes. Also, supposedly those all had forge cranks, and 9.4:1 compression. There is no reason why that engine couldn't make a lot of power and rev 6000 rpms. You pointed out the in the other vid the distributor limited it. Those tall decks are undesirable because they take a special intake obviously the rods or pistons are going to have to be different to compensate for the tall deck. So the regular stuff is cheaper and more common, but I don't think the heads and a big cam and carb will no how tall the deck is. I think that some of the oval ports heads like that had 2.06 intakes, that is still bigger than the common stock 350 valve size. So it should still have more power potential than a stock headed 350, and probably almost the same potential as a 396 big block. just my opinion. cool video and project, I think its a pretty good idea to run it. oh yeah stainless one piece valves and stronger springs is the first most important thing to get a big block or any lazy engine to rev.

So I did this several years back in mine and am still slowly moving along next is the 411 , mine has a thumper cam gear drive, punched 30,air gapper and full MSD, I bought the engine for 600 with about 1600 miles on it after a county works pulled it out of the flatbed they decided to scrap , I have a few videos but didn't see any where to add them, but you can hit 366 in 85 c10 and see some of the original install, but how do you like them and have you actually did some stop light to stop light romps

Without changing the rotating assembly in tall deck big blocks you have a slow revving lower power engine .... aftermarket rods and pistons with short deck crankshaft is the only way to go and have performance.

Might be but a 366 there isnt much u can do to them for compression wise there barely 7.0 compression, it needs to be up around a more respectful 9.5 to make any power, torque , fuel mileage, and efficiency. They never did impress me.

Why did you cut off the dowel pin? It looks like the flywheel has a hole so you could use it. I’ve never done a flywheel or clutch so I’m asking genuinely, thanks

Have gotten a 454 tall deck, just would have gotten regular 454 pistons and longer rods. makes a killer combo that would rev normally. I am curious of the 366, as they have awesome torqude.

I've got a really good friend that lost his leg from a flywheel blowing apart and coming through the floorboard. Yes he survived the incident but he's always suggesting if anyone is going to replace anything it should be a scatter shield bell housing regardless of low horsepower or high horsepower because the flywheel is turning as fast as the motor for a couple hundred bucks a scatter shield is cheeper insurance than purchasing a prosthetic foot. Because of your tossing together on a wing and a prayer big-time budget build mentality I'd suggest as much safety equipment as possible to yourself and your followers. Reminding everyone watching this is not a how to channel by any means but more of an idiot with a box of tools attempting to make things happen. Try to stay safe and good luck with the swap and stomp. There are a couple videos out where a flywheel grenades I'd suggest looking one up and watching the carnage it's an eye opener. Also your truck looks like it's taken quite a few years to acquire that patina no it's not a show truck but more of a survivor storyline of a long running hard work life. Even though the paint they put on those trucks wasn't great from the factory. I would suggest a patina clear coat from Vince Grip Garage. It's extremely easy to put on can you enjoy the truck almost immediately instead of trying to body work and repaint as a beginner. Without the right tools they tend to have potential to look even worse than a simple shine juice application.

One thing that might help just a little bit though bud, I don't know exactly what you're using to film with but a cheap little personal clip on microphone can help a lot with narration while you're working. Diesel Creek is a pretty cool guy and he uses one on his channel you might be able to message him and ask what is using and I'm sure he'd give a reply when he gets a chance

get rid of that junk fram oil filter. they have consumed thousands of engines. i had a chrysler 400 in a 68 newport and put one on it had no oil pressure. they were good in the late 80s. use if you can a purolator or a wix oil filter. cut one apart and compare it to a good one. those internals are garbage in fram filters. thought i would let you know. ill be watching the next one. take care and stay warm.

I’d do a bondo and Rustoleum job to that ol truck. It’d be really cool to see you do that . 366’s are good motors, especially if you get a good set of heads.

While I like the weird and pointless...it is a lot of work to have more weight, more expensive parts , for less power then a small block
@offroad6309
@offroad6309 4 күн бұрын
What do you mean by power? For some it's horsepower, for others it's torque. These were never designed for HP. The long stroke gives unmatched torque. A little work and money this could be even a larger torque monster. For trucks, torque is generally the way to go.
@2fuzy
@2fuzy 4 күн бұрын
@offroad6309 its just a big block with a small bore and an extra ring and a deck hight that prohibitive to finding anything other then what gm had to offer The stroke isn't evan that long 3.75 same as a small block 400 or 383 Both of which would be more capable of producing HP and Tq and weigh less Where they are great is in low speed heavy load applications such as driving the kiddos to school or running an irrigation pump And if stroke is the thing go find an old poncho But i get you probably had this and that laying around and it seemed like a match made in salvage heaven so why not I just wouldn't expect much
@offroad6309
@offroad6309 4 күн бұрын
@2fuzy WOW, GM really blew it by putting those tall deck block motors and regular BBC in grain trucks and 1 tons and everything else. They could have just put the SBC in and got more torque by your definition.
@2fuzy
@2fuzy 3 күн бұрын
@offroad6309 naw they didn't blow it is a very durable engine and I have one in a bus that is probably coming out and a small block or 454 going in simply because it is ridiculous to find and pay for parts obsolete engines are just expensive
