Hinges- 3m Blenderm..... It's like magic...... I've been flying for 45 years. I haven't found anything else that works as well as this stuff. And it seals the entire length of the control surface. Bevel the control surface. Lay it on top of the wing with a 1/32" shim as a spacer. With the top of the elevon resting on the top of the wing with spacer in between the two. Basically the elevon at its farthest extreme travel all the way until it's resting on the top surface of the wing with a spacer in between... Run the tape the full length of the hinge line. Now move the elevon into it's normal neutral position. Run tape the length of the top of the hinge line. If the elevon down travel is restricted, you need a better bevel or a thicker spacer. The tape sticks to anything. It's flexible. And it lasts forever. It's sold as hinge tape by some hobby companies in small quantity. Or you can buy it from your local pharmacy on a lifetime supply roll for the same price.

That is really impressive! I'm excited to follow the design-build-crash progress on this build. One interesting thing is there are these 50mm jets sold by Arrows. They're rated for 3S but we exclusively fly them on 4s and they really get going. We clock them peaking our around 84mph. I am sure that your model is much more slippery than those. I noticed that the arrows 50mm edf is a 2627 4500kv motor with an 11 blade flan vs powerfuns 2611 5000kv motor with a 12 blade fan. Your plane is much more aerodynamic than the little pocket jets, so you may be able to get some additional juice out with some more motor experimentation.

I really like the overall design. Personally, I'd print a version with the nose right in between this and the previous version and with the impeller moved back half an inch to compensate for cg. Would let you straighten out the inlet duct slightly more as well. Maybe add a quickchange feature to the exhaust nozzle? Some twist lock mechanism or maybe just a thread on design. That'd probably add another gramm or two in the rear ^^ Looking forward to the next iteration.

With this particular plane ( model ) - try using some small-ish Kenard wings midway back from the nose to the leading edge of the main wings & angled slightly downwards to try to lift the front upwards a bit , or , try to add a small amount of length to the tail end or tail weight to your model & see if that works any better ; also , how are you able to video while flying your plane?

a humble suggestion for dealing with CoG issues - print your battery compartment 2x as deep as you need, and print some spacers that are about 1/4 of the battery in length. Using spacers behind or ahead of the battery, you can decently 'dial in' your center of gravity by shifting the location of the battery in the fuselage. The spacers would keep the fit tight so it wouldnt shift in flight. It would also allow you to replace spacers with weights if you wanted to offset a fairly sizable weight or drag vactor, like a go pro.

@hotlapkyle5 ай бұрын
Absolutely I’ll be revisiting the speed jet! Funny enough my 64mm 6s delta fighter didn’t go much faster. It’s a function of the thrust the motor generates or the efflux. It’s tricky to get edf jets flying past a particular speed
@amydenton47598 ай бұрын

Very cool. BTW, adjusting trims will not affect top speed. Trims are just holding a stick position for you.
@thedoctor46378 ай бұрын
Doesn’t holding a stick position (that is not neutral) increase drag and decrease top speed?
@hotlapkyle8 ай бұрын
Yes so I’ve been designing wings for years and I’ve found that having anything up or down from neutral trim will cause drag. Any time you deflect air up or down your causing drag. Look up what a “reflex wing” is. I put lots of reflex into my wings that need to be for beginners so they are more stable. Reflex is an amazing feature in a wing. You can run a reflex flying wing without vertical tails because of the natural stabilization
@OregonMotorcycle8 ай бұрын
@@hotlapkyle Yes anything up or down from neutral will cause drag. Say you have 3 clicks of up elevator. And in your vid you said ok now I am going to remove that trim... Go back 3 clicks, now it's neutral, but you are still holding 3 clicks of trim to keep the plane level with the stick. If you weren't, the plane would nose dive. Meaning once you took the trim away, you still held the trim manually.
@hotlapkyle8 ай бұрын
@@OregonMotorcycle absolutely correct. It did have a slight nose down with zero trim but not enough to cause a problem with level flight speed pass. That’s why I did that

With that one you don't have to worry about sucking any crap into the inlet duct. Funky looking jet - reason enough to own in my book right there. Seems like the nose being so long has questionable benefit but I'm no aerodynamic engineer.

About ‘cooling the ESC’: it doesn’t get hot on full throttle, but at half throttle because it has to dissipate heat. It’s counterintuitive but you can check it on the work bench.

Exactly what I had in mind. My 2 cents then, if I may: The auto stability of your delta wing might need some change ? Plus duct tape as a hinge back-up never hurts. And finally, even on model planes, flutter might be encountered at a point. If you want to go real fast-er you will have to balance (weight) your control surfaces at a point, or face an unexpected event (certainly catastrophic) at a speed you don’t want to lose controle of this tiny thing. Have fun ✈️
