Good idea to label that drive shaft. Parts organization and tagging is critically important especially on a long term project. I can't count how many times I've gone to my project parts shelf and said "what the heck is this thing" when I start going through the contents. Looking forward to seeing more work on Atlas!

Just never know what you will find until you dig into a project. I would bust those drums loose on that rear end and see if the axles spin and check for interesting noises.

It’s crazy how much that rust can push that frame out. Too bad that it has seen a lot of abuse. I thought it was funny that someone stick welded the bumper to the frame🤣. That gapping hole in the transfer case is definitely an issue. Hopefully it can be rebuilt because I’d imagine it would be difficult to find a replacement. I think a 12 valve is an excellent engine choice. When it comes to diesels it doesn’t get much better👍

Bummer Zane, hard to tell what imploded on the transfer case. She could be full of water and frozen at some point? When I was 7 years old I would pick up the used needle bearings off my grandpa's garage floor and collect them. Your u-joint comment reminded me. Cheers, 👍😁

Those battery angle grinders are awesome for disassembling rust buckets! I even halfway disassembled my finger once with one too lol. I'm not a 4x4 guy but I don't know that a bad tcase would necessarily tear up an axle, I'd think the brakes just locked up.

I see you the same brand of creeper that I use as far as the case you could probably braze that hole up and have a machinist cut it back in but if you’re going to use a common might as well use the NV 4500 and transfer case for that will be plenty strong and easy to get parts for👍

Probably just frozen brakes. That broken cap is just that, a cap. They did offer an optional pto that could bolt in it's place though. Should be a rockwell T-223 transfer case. Another option is to source a transfer case out of a M35a3 truck, rockwell t-136-27s. 4wd engagement is accomplished with air & it's a shift on the fly system.

Kinda sad about that frame because that truck is nice. I'm pretty sure you told me before but if you did I forget but that front axle looks like a Marmon-Herrington axle. If that's a Marmon (Rockwell) transfercase it's going to be expensive. Marmon-Herrington & NAPCO were common AWD/4x4 Convertions on Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks back the .

WHAT! You don't like that style Ford truck? Why my boy that's un American. Everybody likes what they like. I am a Ford man and I wish I could find a truck like that in good working condition. You can fix that transfer case. Jack up the rear and see if it turns freely. I dare to bet that transfer case is a Spicer or Borg Warner.
