Project Car: 2000 BMW M Roadster Hardtop

Last year, I bought a project car: 2000 BMW M Roadster - to preserve the manuals. It needs a new soft top, but I was lucky enough to find a sapphire black BMW Z3 hard top for sale in Texas. The soft top folds down and the hard top drops right on top and you secure it to the vehicle.

I bought a light green hardtop two years ago for $1,500. Right now they are going for north of 3k here in California. These things are very expensive now and the cars are gaining value too.

Hopefully, you have the oem BMW hardware for securing the top. They don't make the brackets anymore.

@@RoadandTract Yes I was able to get the oem brackets when I purchased the hardtop from a car. A used car dealership in LA had a z3 sitting for months and I contacted the owner to see if he would sale the hardtop and he agreed. He even told me he would mark up the car now that it was a convertible 😂. Heck if I had known that I would have offered him 500 bucks for the top.

what part of TX? I'm in Austin and just got my 98. The hydraulic top doesn't do anything or even make any noise that I can tell when I try to open it. Also, it has resistance if you try to push it open so I didn't force it.

The engine is running when you try to use the top? Did you check fuses?

Great vid! I have a 2001 Bmw Z3 and I can’t stand the cabin noise and I want to install a hardtop to reduce the noise but I don’t know how to go about looking for one😭 do you think you can make an updated video explaining the process and your review after having it installed for awhile?

When you find one, make sure it has the oem mounting hardware. The hardware is extinct. The hardtop is night and day but bulky to store. It does transform the car, but it's not without the same problem as the soft top: water leaks. Proper top placement resolves the wind noise, but if your soft top leaks water, your hard top will also leak water. The hard top does provide an extra layer of security when parked outside. There is also better visibility and more headroom with the hard top. If you can find one in decent shape, get one.

Do you need to first remove the old soft top? Or does the hard top fit over the collapsed soft top? Thanks

You just lower the soft top. No way to remove it. It stows away and you place the hard top on top.
