I used the the old input shaft to whack out the spigot bearing with grease. It was a tighter fit aan no hole in the middle. But I've never done that scary seal.. just mop oil off the floor..;) Great to see so much progress!

Was keeping quiet as unless your seal has the instruction leaflet it’s not obvious. The sealing face is ptfe and has to ‘settle’ in before running ( a few hours), oil or grease prevent the seal from doing so apparently 🙄. Bugger !
@darrellsears-uk2 жыл бұрын
Great Job on the series Max, been following you for years no since first off grid talks. I have always put a small amount of grease on the inside of the seal, it will be fine. Dry or a touch of grease/Oil will have no impact. The Seal will no degrade due to oil as its job is to keep engine oil seeping onto the clutch, there are still parts in the clutch that recieve grease (thrust bearing etc) its not going to mess the clutch up. Any contaminants wont last long in the clutch the forces and heat involved will just burn it off in worst case scenario. If it was a F1 car I would redo it but a landy it will be fine. Youre doing a great Job its not a Site repair with cornflake packet gaskets and baked bean tin exhaust clamps. Its all by the book with care and diligence. Dont let keyboard warriors tell you you are doing anything wrong. I love the real life working environment and making tools to do Job (angle iron Brace and Dumb Bell Drift) instead of KZbin Workshops with every specialist tool.

Yes Darrell you are correct about the small amount of lube. I certainly do and no problems. You need a good degree of common sense and you do find official workshop manual instructions a little questionable some times.

The trick with the grease in the spigot bearing works better if after you put the grease in you then stuff it with some rag, this stops the grease escaping past the socket or whatever.

Max, I did the same thing with my 2.5 diesel in my 110. There should be a label on the seal box saying do not lubricate! Then when I replaced the clutch on my 2.25 petrol, the o-ring came out of the channel at the back, and wouldn't allow the flywheel housing to sit correctly. Another crankshaft seal ruined as it all had to come off again. Best to order two seals for each time you do the job, I guess. I am really enjpying your work. Cheers!

Had no idea you were converting to 200tdi, great choice,I did that to my series 3 109 almost finished, Full engine rebuilld from when I bought it in a million pieces and having to order missing parts and such BUT its done and Runs like a champ.

Good work, I've just finished rebuilding the 200tdi in my defender. Running well now. Went through 2 rear main seals before I finally decided to rebuild it to get rid of the pesky leak. Fitted a genuine corteco seal and not a drop of oil.Definitely have to be fitted dry. Also replaced the T seals on the bearing cap as they can be bad for oil leaks too. I had the same experience with grease and the spigot Bush, didn't do anything so chisled it out too.

Max, my friend the use of grease to remove the pilot bearing was right method but the exacution is the problem, you need to have the plunger fit tighter. Whittle a piece of wood to be just slightly oversized, what is required is a kind of hydraulic action. Your plunger needs to fit tighter, it does work, cause I do it this way. Good luck.
@jonnoMoto2 жыл бұрын
Not sure why he didn't use the old shaft he used as a clutch tool. I've used bar soap successfully in the past. Works instead of grease when I don't have a tight fit

Great vid. Hard to imagine how putting oil on a seal that will b sealing oil would in any way hurt it. Been a mech all my life. The 73 at present. That pilot bearing didn’t have much in the way of square inches of area to allow the massive hydraulic pressure generated by the hammer blows. I thought for sure u would machine a little round stock in your lathe to act as the piston. That would have stopped the leakage around the extension that was reducing your effective pressure by a whole bunch. Anxious to c the reasoning behind u having to take it all apart again. I think it would have been just fine. Of course I may b wrong. Just not convinced yet. Oil walking up the threads of the flywheel bolts can b a problem. When assembling, a dab of silicon on the flywheel and matching bolt faces helps out. Many new bolts come coated with the sealing similar to what the rear main had on its exterior.

Teflon seals have very good chemical/oil resistance and work well under high temperatures. They seal effectively with friction, oil reduces the friction so they leak if oil is applied during assembly

The hydraulic method works you just need a solid bar instead of a socket then wrap it in tape until its a snug enough fit that when inserting there is a bit of effort required
@LiamRoberts002 жыл бұрын

@innleadair2 жыл бұрын
re the spigot bush removal. You need something that's a much closer fit than the socket and something without a hole through it :o) A chunk of steel bar is ideal, doesn't need to fit exactly as a few turns of carefully wound electrical tape can be used to make it fit perfectly. Instinct says that the tape would just wilt immediately, but as long as the steel bar was free from oil/grease when you wound the tape on, it works fine. Fill the hole with grease, start the punch in the hole and hit it hard with a decent sized hammer. A couple of goes is usually enough to pop the bush out.

Be careful when using 21/4 engine mount brackets. Yes they will fit and in some cases work but sometimes they don't mount the engine high enough for the 200 tdi front pulley to clear the front diff at full travel (sometimes it works fine. Hurrah for Land Rover build tolerances!).I think the 200 has a bigger pulley than a 21/4 and also the front diff is in a slightly different place in a series than a coiler. Great video as always!

On the better quality seals it does include a leaflet that explains not to lube and why. It’s the ptfe coating that is damaged before it’s bed in so doesn’t seal.

200tdi's all came painted gold from factory, and the 'gold seal' rebuilds that everyone raves on about were never a thing for the 200's, they were just factory rebuilds if they had any work done whilst in service, the amount of people trying to sell 200tdi's that still show the original gold paint as gold seal engines is laughable! True gold seal engines had a totally different engine number to the original, along with paperwork verifying it was an authentic rebuild, either way, the 200/300tdi is about the best mechanical injection 4 pot diesel out there, such a lovely lump that land rover just got right!

I have always greased the backside and inner sealing surface of every seal I've ever installed and while I've had two leak it was due to imperfections that tore up the seal. I'm interested in hearing the explanation as to why application of oil to a seal would ruin it. My understanding has been oil on the seal lessons friction, and friction causes heat that can overheat the seal.
@dragon4r42 жыл бұрын
Teflon works best with friction, oil applied during assembly obviously lessens friction and it will leak. Teflon also works well under high temperatures so heat from friction is not a problem
@nickboylen68732 жыл бұрын
Max, do yourself a big favour now, when replacing the crank seal, and drill clearance holes through the bell housing flange for those four cap head bolts into the ladder frame - with the bell housing undrilled, you will not be able to remove the bolts with the gear box attached, and thus unable to remove the ladder frame to access the crank shaft without removing the gear box from the engine. Using a drift to hydraulically remove the spigot bush needs a solid drift. With the socket set, you are just compressing the air inside the void of the socket.
