For those who don't know Punana Leo O Maui is a Hawaiian language.immersion school on Maui starting with the very young among us. The parents are considered partners in learning and required to spend significant time in the class room with the children. It is an exceptional program.

Basically the song says “hele au I ke kula mai Maui ma ka punana Leo o Maui.” Meaning “I come to hawaiian immersion school on Maui and to learn to ‘ōlelo Hawaii at school”. Our language WAS dead and is being brought back to life through people who choose to learn the language. Without the language there is death but with our language so near and dear to our heart, there is life. E ola mau mākou o ka lahui o Hawaii nei, ‘ano’i wau iā ‘oukou.

I feel like you guys are my lost family. I’m an Alifuru tribe in Molo’uku Islands. People say, Moluccans are Melanesian. But I believe we are Melanesian+Polynesian. Moluccan people are just like Polynesian people. Our culture, language and traditions share a common value to the people in other Pacific Islanders as well, Polynesian to be exact.

I've been looking for the lyrics (in Hawaiian) of this cheerful song, but sofar without success. Can anyone point me to where I can find them (NOT on facebook etc.)? Of naybe, assuming they're in the public domain, post them here? BTW, I live 7000+ miles from Maui, but distance doesn't matter when it comes to music and song.

The “Aina “of Hawaii belongs to the children, yet we have to do a better job of securing their future here on the islands. Far too often, the children leave to find education and learning on the mainland and only return to see their ohana when convenient. There are huge opportunities here in medicine and other careers. Stay in school, study hard, and come home....the islands need children who become adults and return to make their destiny whole again!
