I just love your channel and your work. I don't know of anyone who could do a better job in a home garage situation. I love how the shrinker/stretcher arrives, and you think, hmmm how could I make this about 20 times better?, I know... Also the welding in the short length of rod to make the template, simple but genius. Very well done indeed.

Thanks for the comment, and follow. The new tool is awesome, and now that I have it right next to the car, helps a lot. The wire as a template was a must have, since the beam makes a two direction curve right there. It was not possible to make it fit the Spring bracket without copying the actual shape of the beam. It was only solution that I could come up with...

It's amazing the amount of sins paint and undercoating can hide. When I first saw this car I thought, "Looks pretty good. Shouldn't be too difficult." Boy was I wrong. Glad it fell into your hands and will be done right.

Danke für den tollen Kommentar. Das nächste Projekt wird hoffentlich mein Traumauto sein, der Lotus Esprit S1. Allerdings wäre hierfür eine gewisse Finanzierung erforderlich. Aber ich möchte diesen GT nicht verkaufen

Es ist wirklich schlimm, wie runtergekommen der Wagen ist. Aber umso mehr freut es mich, dass du dir die Arbeit machst und wirklich, das halbe Auto mit neuen Blechen reparierst. Ich freue mich schon auf die weiteren Videos. Wirklich tolle Arbeit. Andere würden wahrscheinlich nur bleche drunter schweißen und die Löcher verschließen. 😊

Danke für den Kommentar. Ja, das ist ein ziemlich verrücktes Projekt. Aber ich will es gut machen, und ich könnte nicht mit dem Wissen leben, dass sich im Auto versteckter Rost befindet. Alles muss entfernt werden.

Wow, I’m doing literally almost the exact same process on my Volvo 1800. The front crossmember were rotted to had to peel off layer by layer weld in new patches . Just got done with making a patch panel for the floor today . I really should keep the phone recoding video as I do it . I’ve got a few KZbin’s here but haven’t done a video for a while because nobody watches them

Hot dwelling excessively on details, but still showing enough to understand what you're doing. Just the right balance in my humble opinion :)

Thanks for the comment. This episodes fix was somewhat annoying and difficult, so it took longer than usually. The welding alone took few days to complete. Thank god it is done now...I appreciate your views and follow.

I fell in love with Opel GTs when I was in elementary school. I saw one pull in at a drive-in burger restaurant and was enamored with it, so I bought one when I was 18. I still have it, almost 40 years later. It needs a restoration now, but is in line with several other project cars and the usual home repairs and daily driver upkeep. I admire your tenacity tackling the metalwork on this one.

Thanks, Yep, I had to...the flexible electric wire was good for reaching the far end of the beam. It will be power sprayed with liquid rust protection before sealing up.

I'm so glad you are restoring this beauty. I suspect anyone else would have settled for less attention to detail thus the rust would return sooner. I can't wait for you to finish your 1900GT, I just know it will be a huge success. I love the 1900GT. One thing you have shown me is I need to find another car to restore not a 1900GT. For me there are too many rusty hidden secrets in the body and frame. I'm certainly not in the same class as you so inspecting and identifying a rusty 1900GT from a relatively rust free 1900GT is going to be far too hard for me without a large x-ray machine. Keep up the great work

Thanks for support and comment. Yes, I would say that tend to overkill tasks sometimes...But I think this car is entitled to survive another 50+ years... Identifying rusty and and "far gone" GT from each other (there is "no rust" option available), is very difficult I have learned. But if I would buy another one, I surely know where to look for if I try to avoid trouble. I wish my next project would be Lotus Esprit S1 with fiberglass body...for a reason...

Last opel corvette style ive seen was in 2012 in this condition stick shift . This is turning out great , great work .

Stick shift is the only way to go with these kind of cars. Performance with automatic must have been rather dull...

Thanks for the support. But honestly, I don't know is it the machine, skills, gas that I'm using, or combination of all above, but it is very hard to have decent continuous welding for sheet metal. For material 2mm+ I have no problem, but it is the sheet metal that bring tears in my eyes. Yes, they are solid and strong welds, but I spend proportionally way too much time on grinding welds.

@@GT1900garage I can understand what you tell me, it took me 4 years of evening lessons to do it properly. I don't normaly help people because I got a lot of rebuke in the past. But you seem to me a very honest person, so ok, there is one person out there where you can learn a lot about welding, but the guy is a pain because of his stubborness. On you tube you have a certain bad chad, he is a welder www.youtube.com/@BadChad. And I agree with his methods. You have to point each five cm a weld, then to not warp the metal, you joint the points very slowly. But I prefer you to watch him. I hope sincerely that this can help you a lot Cheers, Guy

A rotisserie is THE ONLY WAY! The car I am finishing - as I told you probably my last - is on my lift. I have used 4 sq ft of 18 gauge, 2 rolls of wire, 2 bottles of gas and uncounted types and numbers of abrasive discs. Why on my lift?? Because I loaned my damn rotisserie to a buddy for his R Code 1964 Ford Galaxie. Rangoon red, dual quad 427, 4 speed. A good deed never goes unpunished. But for a car like that? My upside down welding is justified. Yes. Pilot hole. A Rotabroach wants to dance and skip all the way back to where it was made! Great work!

I hear you !! I share the agony. When I finished my Mini in 2010, I gave my rotisserie to someone who was about to start working with his Mini. This is now 13 years ago, and I have forgot who that person was !!!.....So this one that I am now using, belongs to my friend..

i love how you actually know what tin snips are. people have an unhealthy obsession with grinders, like it's the only tool in the universe. also, you keep your workspace spotless, respect.

Thanks for the comment, and for noticing this. Actually there is one (main) reason for not using grinder for cutting too much. I have policy that I cannot do any fire hazardous work for three hours before I call it for the day. So there must be at least three hours from last sparks in the garage, before shutting the shop for the night. So usually if you see me using hand tools, that is mostly due to late hours... And pretty much same goes with the keeping workspace clean and in order - safety first.....And it looks better...

Thanks... I also thought that I have healthy rear beam, but luckily I have the best tool (endoscope) to find out more bad news. And then I just could not leave any rust, so no other option but to take the beam open. And I'm glad that I did so.. Now this is good for another 53 years.

To be honest. I was kinda disappointed, since the beam look good from the outside. But thanks to by best tool, endoscope, I was able to prove myself to be wrong again !!! But I'm glad that I did fix this properly !!

Definitely a labour of love rebuild. That kind of previous damage and rust would've turned-off even the most ardent Opel GT fanatic. My hat is off to you, good sir. You're a better man then I when it comes to restoring an automobile! :)

Thanks for the comment again. This topic of "is it worth the effort" seems to be the main subject in my comments, I think I need to address that in my future episodes.. But the main point is that I would be devastated not to finish this project after all the effort (and money). And since I have no deadline for this, it is just quality time by myself in the garage.

Thank you so much for another excellent video. After having seen so many similar contents on YT, i may say that your video diary really stands out for several reasons. First of all you demonstrate masterful crafting skills. But i guess your success is more based on the emotion of the viewer, that you are able to create. It all comes together. The lighting, the focus, the whole scenery, the timing and the music that ties everything together. I cannot overemphasize how much i appreciate your selection of music to underline the mood of every workstep. There are many talented craftsmen on YT, but few are able to edit their contents in the way you do. It’s just brillant. Can‘t wait for the next episode.

Well, it looks a lot. But I have EVERY SINGLE piece of metal that I took away from this GT so I could measure it exactly how much I have changed the metal, I think it will be something between 10-20% from the total weight.. But yes, I paid shit load of money for the car, and hauled it from Germany to Finland (cost me another shit load of money) .... I have no other option but to make it worth the investment 😂

Thanks for the comment. Kindly disagree with grinding flat. When the seam is not visible, I will make sure that weld is not the weakest point. My welding skills are FAR from that quality that I could grind the welds to level and still have 100% strong sheet metal. I will grind flat when it is outer panel (but then I have full weld at the back of the panel), but when it is not visible, I rather leave a nice chunky seam to resist the corrosion and strain. To be honest, I think many of the non-professional car restorers grind way too much off the welds, just to look good. But I think in frames it will create a weak spot for the sake of looking good..

Your fabrication of replacement panels is outstanding. Don't be afraid to grind your welds flat. Try welding on some scrap pieces, grind them flat and try to break them. You will be amazed how strong they are. keep up the good work. Thanks for the videos. @@GT1900garage

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have grinded flat, ( in episode of fender fixes), but there it is ok since I have full fat weld at the back of the panel. But this is a learning process.... maybe some day I can have invisible welds that holds....

Yes, if you don't count your own work hours in terms of €....It will be cheap restoration. Definitely will pay back when finished.

From the outside it didn't look too bad... but omg it was gone on the inside! well done! Can I recommend a tig welder, I tried mig for quite some time but it was all flash bang and either miss completely or big blob. With tig it's much more controllable, more like gas brazing, and you can go back and tidy it up, my angle grinder is doing much less work now. Worth a try.

Yep, that was my thoughts initially, only upon closer look, I realized that it is as rusty as the other side was... Well, its done now...And YES, I have considered buying a TIG, for long time. So far I have not come across with reasonable priced used one..But I'm looking. Especially when it is time to weld the roof panel in.....I think I need a TIG.

For cleaning the primer and paint from your spot weld spots you can use a broken drill or rod the right size for the hole and grind a flat on the end. The friction will take it right off.

Very good point, and actually I did use the old bit where I grind the tip flat. But it only works well when the epoxy was completely cured. When the epoxy was somewhat soft, the sharp hobby knife was the best tool..

I've watched you fab a good 75% of this car out of flat sheet metal & there's still more to go yet, & you make it look like anyone should be able to do it, & I'm still struggling to get my prestamped floor panels in so I can then struggle with some more prestamped panels...Lol! But one thing is for sure, once completed, this is gonna be the cleanest, most rust free Opel GT on the planet! Lol! Are you doing a custom paint job, or a factory color?

Thanks again for feedback. Yes, one thing is for sure, this will be one of the rare bunch of totally rust free GT:s 😀 I think that most of us could do this, all it takes is tools and time. Skills will evolve along the process... About the paint, I have couple of the options, but it is definitely not going to be so called tuning painting....Factory color, but not necessarily Opel factory...

@@GT1900garage well, I certainly learned a few things about pattern making & using a shrinker/stretcher & why I need one, & using a bead roller & why I need one of those, even if I'm not punching louvres...Lol! But hands on experience will have to come later... I'm doing ok, & it's certainly gonna turn out fine, but it's not especially easy even with prestamped panels, I couldn't even imagine tackling this with nothing but tools & flat sheet metal... though my tool collection is steadily growing... for me, flat metal is for a flat patch...Lol! I'll get past that eventually, but right now I'm doing good to fit these other patches... Lol! As far as paint, I was hoping it wouldn't be that grotesque orange color that it was originally... I'm certainly not against orange, but that particular shade just isn't very flattering... but as smooth as you're getting it, I'm sure it'll look good whatever color it's gonna be... pearl white would actually make it look like the gemstone... that would be kinda cool...

Sorry, I have missed this reply.. I have learned that special tools are handy, but one does not always need to have the best and most expensive option... Best tools that I have, are from 60's , simple and rigid. Keep up the good work with your projects. And I am truly happy that I have few regular viewers that comment the videos... So keep on commenting.. they are fun to read and reply...

Ich habe das Auto in Hamburg gekauft, weiß aber nicht, wo das Auto vorher war. In den letzten 10 Jahren war das Auto als Auto eine Requisite für Filme und Fernsehproduktionen. Und es scheint selbstverständlich zu sein, dass das Auto eine Vorgeschichte aus einem Gebiet hat, in dem schlechte Bedingungen herrschten und beispielsweise Streusalz verwendet wurde

Thanks for the comment, appreciated. No spare part cars available in Finland, so it would cost a lot of money to transport the car up here. And still, all the parts I need would be as rusty in the spare part car I presume. Some parts are commercially available, but mostly they are flimsy repro parts. So few reasons why I make my own parts: 1. Very expensive original parts. 2. Not available locally 3. I rather make parts from 1,25 mm steel, instead of 0,6 reproduction parts. 4. I am a part of the generation that rather fix things than buy new. 5. I like to challenge myself 6. Better youtube content, I would say... Thanks for the follow, and hope you enjoy rest of the project as well !!!

Great Video! I will have to look at my 1973 GT. I hope it isn't that rusty! Also was that shrinker/strecher worth it? I am sure my grandpa and I are going to need something that that for sure.

Hi Sam. That's why I named the episode as "Pandora's Box" because I KNOW that many GT owners will start to think, "I wonder do I have the same problem" 😅😅 The shrinker/stretcher was around 200€, (this is the light and cheap version), and I made the foot operated stand from scrap metal so it was free. I think you can find these way much cheaper in US, and maybe second hand...

Thanks for comment. Yes, it was, I'm glad that is done, because it was a pain in the... I have some thoughts about the engine, maybe searching for 2000 engine with fuel injection...My initial target would be about 20% hp increase, but could go higher is opportunity rises. To be honest, I havent paid too much attention to the requirements for getting first registration to Finnish system (with spiced up engine)...I need to study a bit..

Yes, when metal work is done, car will be sand blasted again VERY LIGHTLY, and completely sealed with industrial heavy machinery proof epoxy. On top of that layer, and the filling and smoothing, and then painted...

Tuossa käytin vielä Motonetin 2K epoxia, mutta noi puhalletaan vielä pois ja auto maalataan ympäriinsä raskaan kaluston epoxilla. Siitä en tiedä tarkempia speksejä vielä. Mutta nyt kun tuota oon hionut jostain kohdista pois, niin oon todennut että pirun kovassa tuokin on...
