You might want to add a fuse close to the battery. 14 awg short in the cabin is a fire hazard under the hood. You might even find a free fuse slot in the fuse box under the hood. Great video as always.
@ApartmentKing666 жыл бұрын
Or put an inline fuse directly into the wire itself, although that would involve cutting the wire.
@roryp74156 жыл бұрын
@@ApartmentKing66 "although that would involve cutting the wire." That's the point, lol
@Ccoleworld36 жыл бұрын
putting two fuses on the same wire is pointless
@tapatazapata59705 жыл бұрын
@@Ccoleworld3 True, but the issue here is that the whole red wire is not fused at all. The control box fuse is there to protect the box itself and the stuff that the box powers. If you install anything powering it directly from the battery, it is good practice to place a fuse as close as possible to the battery to protect the wire itself. If your wire gets shorted to ground because of the insulation melting, wearing off, or even because of a crash, the fuse will prevent a possible fire. In this case the wire is quite well insulated and protected, at least in the engine bay, but I'd still place a fuse. Depending on where you live, you may even have issues with insurance in case of fire.
@altonbarna71615 жыл бұрын
know this is late but all police interceptors have wiring for lights and sirens ready and fuses in the underhood fuse box
@Myodots9 жыл бұрын
Great video, but I have one suggestion. From an electrical perspective, a long run of cable like that with no fusing is dangerous. If any part of that wire chafes and shorts out to the frame, you will pass all the current from the battery (hundreds of amps) through the wire, potentially causing a fire hazard. A fuse should be located close to the battery to reduce the length of unprotected conductor.
@chrisfix9 жыл бұрын
Myodots Thanks a lot. That will be addressed in the next episode.
@Marineio9 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix I'm with Myodots - any length of wire should be fused to protect the wire (not the device!). Also, if the module is left on (with engine off), how long is the battery going to last? Would it not be better to run an ignition switched relay in-line with the power wire, to ensure it's off when the key is off?
@dominicrankin96357 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix please make a video
@ApartmentKing666 жыл бұрын
Marineio: the problem with routing the power through the ignition switch is that you have to turn the ignition switch on to run anything that goes thru it. You sometimes need to use something NOW and not have to bother with keys. Bypassing directly to the battery eliminates the extra step of having to turn the ig switch on. Another thing: if something is turned on and even if power to it is run through the ignition switch, it will still drain the battery if the engine's off simply because the alternator isn't running to recharge the battery.

Nice work! And I agree; a push-bar would make it look more legit. If you're buddy's allowed to have all this police equipment on his off-duty he could have been a little more creative with his choice of vehicles though. A low millage Lincoln Mark VII with a few engine upgrades would whoop this thing any day! There was a Sheriff's department with one as a cruiser (or possibly a personal off-duty vehicle?) down in Florida. A stock Mark VIII would work too.

@ronaldandolsek46378 жыл бұрын
Chris, very nice job. I have 35+ years police experience and have done many cruiser installs and repairs. May I suggest that you seal the firewall wire holes with a flexible sealant? I use 3M's "window-weld ribbon sealant." It stays pliable and works much better than silicone, which can leak over time. The crown vic police packages have a terminal post at the fuse box that is dedicated to accessories. Like the others, it is best to install an in-line fuse or circuit breaker near the power source. Crown vic's also have a wire trough that runs along the right side under by the rocker panel. I am very impressed that you used heat shrink butt connectors and protected the wire with the wire loom. Wire loom is essential to protect any strobe light conductors because they chafe and arc to ground very easily. I have got into the habit of using relays for high current equipment. Very impressive and good quality video of the process.

Chris love the videos man just wondering why you didn't want to loom up with cabin wires into a harness with vinyl or standard electrical tape? Also, instead of feeding straight off the battery, there's usually open connection in the fuse panel or rear of the fuse panel for an auxiliary or ignition switched 12v circuit. Love the use of heat shrink. I also pull the hard plastic ends of of crimp terminals. Harbor freight also sells the adhesive lined polyolefin shrink tube. They call it Marine Shrink Tube and it's in the electrical isle with the extension cords and all, NOT the isle that has the regular shrink tube and all of the other "storehouse" products in those neat little plastic cases, even though it does come in the same style case! Ehh butt connectors aren't the best thing to use. Better to solder always, and cover with heat shrink tubing.
@tapatazapata59705 жыл бұрын
There are different schools of thought on this. Crimps done with the right tools are often preferred to soldering in vibrating environments.
@Patrick94GSR4 жыл бұрын
@Meme Man I have since changed my opinion to that of preferring a proper crimped connection in automotive applications, due to solder's tendency to break or crack in harsh conditions. However some butt connectors are junk. As the comment above mentioned, a proper crimp with the right tools are best. Or, crimp and solder for a little extra security.

i see that car in the rear view and im calling 911 just to make sure its a real officer...looks like something a security guard would be driving
@GAMEVIDSnorwegian4226 жыл бұрын
Which is fully legal to do, many people do that just in case, and all officers will understand if u tell them u r calling the police to authenticate its legit. But this isnt gonna be used to pull people over, it was never intended to.

If I recall there is grommets on passenger side of the vic p71s, and pre unused wires to front. Made installs easy when new.

You going to add some power? Or at least do the j-mod... These things have asthma, if you help them breathe better, the performance increases by quite a bit.
@AgentOffice9 жыл бұрын
You don't have a fuse on the battery end??? That's extremely dangerous! ! The other end is only a backup, the entire wire isn't protected!

I like how the sirens are for "a real officer who just needs it installed for work" yet the last video with the same car he's talking about how he's totally redoing the car and buying parts from junkyards so the car is useable, and also departments will usually pay for installs of necessary tools like sirens
