They've done compression tests and checked the engine over and it's in really good condition. Mercedes made cars to last.

So can some one explain . To be in this race you gotta have a 20 years old car ? And drive slow ? What else ?

Slow...ish but constant. It's harder than it looks although not that impressive at first glance. It's also a test of endurance for you as a driver because if one stage is 580km that's a lot without highways and so on. And by the way, try to keep an average of 46kph on national twisted roads. The most important thing in regularity rallies is that you need to end a stage in an exact given time. It's a rally on public roads with different weather conditions that can lead up to snow and ice. And the cars that can be used are usually from the '50-'70 eras, so not so common. It's an endurance rally for old cars that aren't so reliable in first place. Take a car from 1980, not older, and do 1900km. See how you cope in 5 days or so of driving in these condition. This is pretty much a regularity rally. Not for show but for love of cars. And this is why these rallies aren't so known unless you're into such thing.

I'd guess the Benz is probably an easier car to drive slow than some of the cars he'll be competing against. How do you drive any of those Lancias he listed slowly?

It's not a race, it's a rally. In this sort of rally you have to keep to a specific time for each stage set by the organisers of the rally. Generally, that is a fairly low speed but on some sections (like the Col de Turini) it's a lot faster for the conditions. The accuracy expected of the winner requires amazing consistency and care. It's a very different sort of driving skill to racing round a circuit.
