As they said multiple times: it's easy to stay at zero on the straight roads, but it's hard to keep up with time on the twisty bits, so drivers won't be so careful when they have to catch up a few hundred meters (standing still at crossroads also adds time to catch up) That, together with the lack off pretty much any safety from factory such as ABS, responsive suspension, airbags, etc still might not be enough to demand a full roll cage, but if it can save 1 life in 10 races, it wasn't. Better safe than sorry, as many of those cars don't have crumple zones or the strength of modern cars.

At the start of this series Alex mentioned getting young people more into classics. This is just not how to do it. I think it's cool, but I agree with a lot of the comments....it is a bit boring. Do something more exciting and engaging with some old classic. Maybe getting some old British car and doing a track series? Now that would be fantastic

Does anyone else think this is the lamest “race” ever. Driving around streets doing the speed limit for 300 “grueling” miles. The mods on all of these cars are completely useless. These rally’s are for elderly people who want to dress their cars up like rally cars but without any of the actual risk, so they just end up with a street car with a useless roll cage and light pods. Edit: this is basically the elderly European equivalent of riced out Honda’s with picnic bench wings and fart can exhausts. Except those Honda’s actually have a better chance of driving fast than these dust buckets

Most classic ar rallies in Germany are like that, because moft of the cars attending are far too valuable to put them in a risk of crashing. And unlike Americans we don't throw our money out of the window.

capitis_damno it’s fine to take classic cars for long trips in a slightly competitive setting. The problem is all the useless “racecar” mods on street cars that will never be driven hard at all. So many of the cars shown were dressed up like they were ready to Dakar when in reality they’ll never leave the streets. And these Germans aren’t immune to throwing their money out the window either. Those roll cages and light pods aren’t cheap.

I can say it is a great experience. Especially if the roads are challenging because in a straight line it is easy to average a certain speed, but on a windy road, it can be hard to maintain the respective speed. And no it cannot be compared to actual rallying but it is one of those things that you can only 'understand' if you actually try it.

When you are dealing with old cars there is no point risking wrapping a rare car round a tree just to race at speeds any normal car today can achieve. Much more sensible to make it a technical challenge.

Not at all, theres full action rally (fast as you can) and regularity rally which is what he is trying with the merc. The latter is often driven by pure street cars and the fast rallies arr fully prepped rally cars.
