Last time I made brick walls, I cut foam strips. Glued a strip to the base then cut it into bricks. It made building fast and easy.

One idea to firm up the walls would be to use toothpicks vertically though the bricks to help them stick together better. You could use a small drill bit to drill a shaft after stacking and gluing, then insert the tooth picks and glue them in. Finish the top row of bricks off with no holes to hide the picks. Just an idea.

I'm new to the channel and was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone had brought this idea up yet. I agree with the toothpicks, if we need more strength. Just like cinder block and rebar in real life.

I like these vids because you do explain how it was done. I do still favorite your tutorials because they're extremely specific on colors, techniques etc. But I think once a month for your very detailed videos is a must and once a month is more than enough. There is ALOT that goes into your detailed lengthly videos, so I completely and undeniably agree with you

I use cheap vinyl floor tile for bases. It's cheap (about $1.50) for a 1' sheet, available in single sheets at any Home improvement store. It cuts easily with an exacto knife and provides a sturdy, light base for modular pieces. They are even available with adhesive on one side, which is perfect for attaching them to a larger board (but inconvenient if you use that side as the bottom). When I first started making 3D dungeon accessories I intended to make the entire dungeon on a piece of flat board- this got tedious, because I couldn't use these monstrosities for more than one or two sessions and they piled up quick, with no easy way to store them. So instead, I use the tile now to make moveable "corner" pieces with foam walls or one sided hallways that can easily be placed on the battle map where I need them. Your channel has definitely inspired me to make more detailed pieces and really enhanced our gaming table.

I really like your tutorials, quick and concise with the editing. But I also appreciate this format covering various techniques, what worked best, and the results. I can typically visualize what you did as you're talking and don't necessarily need to witness the build process unless it's a totally new technique. Both formats work well, and you're time and effort is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your contributions to the community, sir!

One my favorite of your tutorials so far (and I've liked them all). Really great techniques - and all of them turned out nice. Also, glad to hear how easy it was, milling thicker foam down on the Proxxon. I just picked up one myself, in hopes that would alleviate the issues I have with finding anything thinner than 1" thickness where I live. Keep up the great work!
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the vid. Yea the proxxon cuts through foam quickly and easily, you can adjust the temperature to suit the thickness, so even cutting stuff across the whole length of the wire is doable without much resistance. The only limitation is the length of the wire/height of the arm, you can't rip anything taller than that.

Love all your older videos like this where you build stuff with foam bricks. Your videos inspired me to buy all the stuff you listed and then turn this hobby into a business where I can help others who can't afford or have the space for the Proxon and all of the tools needed. I think it would be great if you went over these older videos in your new stuff to show everyone what you would now do differently as you have progressed in your skills. I also miss your questions and answer videos where you address questions and your opinions on stuff. Thanks for the inspiration and hobby you shared with us! :)

Another great video and I really enjoyed you sharing the pros and cons of making each ruin. On the issue of base material, I use commercial floor tile. It's sturdy and soft enough to score and trim as needed to base. Also it's a little heavier which is what you want for a base. Easily paints up too. A box of commercial tile is not that expensive and goes a long way. Just a thought 😊

I actually make mine using a similar method to how you do the columns. I cut out a specific length and thickness in my foam in strips over and over, sand all the edges and every inch to half inch depending on size or what not indent with a nail file. That way I can just stack them up on top of one another cutting off what I don't want, and the scraps are usable for other sections or ruble.

Black Magic Craft yeah I can understand that. I just "finished" (aka haven't painted them yet) modular walls for my husband. We play on a giant piece of foam board that I cut into a stone grid that fits over our coffee table, so the walls help denote things, but after making a whole bunch of 4 inch, 3 inch, 2 inch, and 1 inch pieces out of dollar store foam board I'm about ready to not look at another piece of foam for a week or two.

Well done sir! I like vids like this comparing processes so you can see the various results and decide which method best fits your needs. l don't think you need to necessarily need to show craft methods that have been demonstrated before on other pieces, simply recapping as you did in this one should suffice for everyone l would think. You could always drop in a few stills of things for clarity if need be, rather than filming it. And if this speeds up the number of vids you can make, then l'm all for it. I look forward to the next installment and what l can learn from it!

Something to consider to help with making things go faster for you is do some videos on how to.... planks, rocks, stones, shingles, bases, etc. And mass produce a bunch of each of them and just store them in tubs till you need them. That way you don't have to do it each time for each video and that way you don't have to show how to do them each time. Also you should have them already coated in your black magic glue so you don't have to do that each time other then maybe some touch ups. Just a thought on how to make things more streamlined for you. It's what I did in the past when I made my own terrain pieces. I would sit down one weekend a month or so and do nothing but bricks till I couldn't stand it anymore. Then switch to planks or stones or any other thing I needed. I would end up with a 50gl tub of each thing and would be good for a month or two maybe longer on some of them. Though the bricks and shingles I would go through a lot faster then most of the there stuff.

Love the format, especially the fact that it gives more of your content! I admire your craftsmanship, and I've stolen most (if not all) of your ideas. I do have some questions about the 3M spray adhesive you mentioned. I know you said you have to work quickly, but what's that mean in real time? Seconds? And how forgiving is the adhesive? Once I mate the surfaces together, is there any 'wiggle room' or is it bonded? Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom, and I eagerly await your next video. Peace out!
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. When I say work quickly I mean 15-30 seconds quickly....and you got one shot for the bond, once the glue touches, its STUCK and there is no wiggle room. Other thing to keep in mind with that glue is that it is very harsh and needs to be done outside, and even then I wear a dust mask as it mists fibrous adhesive particles that you really don't want to breathe. It's a bit of effort, but it is very strong adhesive that wont warp anything.

I seen that you really hated scoring the lines for your first ruins project and I was wondering if you have considered making a small fixture that could hold multiple knifes or pens an inch or centimeter apart to score multiple lines in one go? This could also work very well for evenly spaced curved lines like with your long boat video. If you have considered this, what has deterred you from doing it? I'm thinking about starting some of these crafts and if thats a big no-no I'd like to know it before hand lol. Also, I'm trying to watch these in order so Idk if you covered it yet, but I saw some amazing looking trees in the background on this video. A tutorial on those is on my wish list. Keep them coming, you are just as entertaining as you are informative. Even if I don't make anything, they are still great watches.

By not using any sort of pva glue all over them. Don't coat them in things that shrink when drying.

I've shown it in a few different vids, but its honestly super simple. Just take some tinfoil crumple it up in a ball and roll it over your xps foam to dent it up and give it texture.

Once a month is fine for a build and/or a tutorial. Anything beyond that would be a bonus for us but should not constitute an onus on you...Love 'em all anyway and am old enough to understand delayed satisfaction...

No, the game table is a sacred and private place....also I think watching people play D&D in a non online medium is super weird and boring....not my cup of tea. Possibly something like a campaign diary though would be fun to do.

Thanks!....to be truthful it's not the actual editing thats the problem, I like doing that...it has more to do with the fact that I film on my phone and have to jump through hoops with conversions and audio syncs to get everything editable in final cut pro...really I just need a proper camera.

I just tried my hand at the scatter wall in this project, and didn't use the jig. I don't think it's necessary. Furthermore, I actually made variations in the sizes as I cut, and I think it's a better piece for it. I have a few other tips, I'll probably make a video at some point.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial I don't craft (this might change), but I love watching you turning very basic stuff into something great. I sometimes wonder - would non-lurkers benefit from a few rough measurements in the videos? Might people who are still finding their way and haven't yet got the crafter's eye inadvertently create giant cottages with tiny doors, or arrested-growth castles, without a little size-prompting? (Not everyone's going to find it easy to judge dimensions from the vids, or to extrapolate successfully from a 28mm figure.) That's enough. Always a pleasure to watch you doing your thing. Thrive, and keep warm.

Hello, newbie here. Great work you did there. What adjustments (material wise) do I have to make for them to be aquarium-safe?
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
This project is in no way intended to be submerged in water....the whole thing would have to be approached with totally different materials. And since I craft for the game tables, not to put things under water I'm not the one to answer that question.

paul coy As a craftsman myself, I beg to differ. Many mistakes over time can build up quickly. Plus the video is about the ruins, and not the table he is using. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything.

Everything I said Was nice. I didn't curse, I didn't disparage the actual crafting of the ruins, I didn't claim my version is superior. And, if you were paying attention, you can see that I have put out ZERO videos myself. I am happy BMC is doing this, as well as other builders on KZbin, as it gives me ideas for my own private games. Some things I have made are really good, but that accounts for, what, 5% of my stuff? Most is okay to put on a table with my friends, but I would be ashamed to bring them up for peer review. I have two, maybe three, really good paint jobs on lead minis, and 1 really good Bridge I built, and that's it. And I've been playing since 1981. And, at the beginning of the video, there is clearly a large glass of beer on the work table. I did not make that up.

The buildings look great. I don't have the tools you used (hot wire cutter etc proxon table?) Talking without showing really doesn't work. You assume that I have seen other videos you have done. This technique doesn't work.

@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
From over 100 comments on the video, you are the first the dislike the format, can't please everyone. I have many videos, and viewers who watch regularly, showing the same techniques over and over again would be very repetitive for them, so I have to assume some things are already known if I've covered them many times. That being said this is more of an advanced project that assumes some base knowledge of tools and techniques, I have started a series of BASICS videos that doesn't make any assumptions, starting from the ground up for new crafters/viewers.

Not as helpful. I understand why its this way, and I applaud you for finding a medium between "can't do it due to time" and "need to inspire". There are tons of nice things online, but similar to a DM Scotty showcase, its not as helpful to see what a master can do if given their own time. Yup, called you a master.
