PROJECT SLAVE 1 PART 11 ‘PAINTING THE UPPER HULL’
This is the final episode of this phase of ‘Project Slave 1’ where I complete this iconic spaceship from the Star Wars saga. It has taken many months to assemble and radically re-design the original parts to produce this studio scale model. I so frequently get dismayed at my results before I'm even halfway through with finishing a paint job. I need to keep this in mind as an example. It's not done until it's done. Incredible results.

Thanks for the great comment poppduder. I do find oils a great way of tweaking the colours to get to the image I have in my head. They have often saved my bacon. 🙂

Man you’ve done it! Congrats! Really should be proud. I’ve enjoyed watching you from start to finish! If you end up building your CAD model, and paint it like this one, I have 1 small critique, the canopy… I think it’s a little to clean for the weathered and chipped hull of the rest of the model. 👍

I'll be honest, your voice gives a very distinct look in my head for your appearance. when I saw the long hair in the painting shot I was like "hold on, this isn't what I thought" Not that it's a bad thing of course, it's just interesting the assumptions people make when they hear someone before seeing them.

Great work amazing just like a studio scale prop ! air brush tip its better to use .3 or .35 needle for the fuselage /bigger areas . The iwata HP-C Plus is amazing . Well done looks incredible !

Thanks destinyangel5, absolutely right a bigger needle would have helped. In truth with all the prep and setup for filming I clean forgot to upgrade. It wasn't till I started spraying that I realised the mistake and by then it was too late to reset everything. Thankfully it turned out fine. 🙂

Try inks, they were used for staining, burnt umber i think or maybe raw, cant remember what i used now. Dab on and off for effect. They stain around the areas on the upper hull behind the wing cowls and down onto the skirt, theres black aswell. Liquitex inks is mostly used.

How do you paint black models? For instance, I want to do a 1/12 scale Tim Burton Batwing… how do you paint black panels and still give them highlights?

Good question. Nothing is truly black. Start with a black base and selectively lighten with dark brownish greys from an airbrush. Adam Savage did a good video on the original model - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoS3qquni72Ujqs 🙂
