Original release - June 2016
2018 Director's Note:
Two years after the making of 'Project Socialize', Casey Neistat's social media app 'Beme' was bought by 'CNN' and converted into a web-news series, using the app as a tool for journalism. Unfortunately, it seems the market wasn't interested in sharing their unfiltered lives online, but the app was able to pivot in a productive direction. One of the other interviewees, Cesar Kuriyama, has found more success with '1 Second Everyday'. At the beginning of 2018, it was the number one paid app in the app store. More people are trying to find a method of documenting their lives for themselves, rather than others, and '1 Second Everyday' is the best option! Thank you for watching.
In today's world, things like FOMO (the fear of missing out), social anxiety, and a decrease in real life interaction skills are being perpetuated by social media. Project Socialize confronts these issues in a conversational approach while trying to understand how we can use it to compliment real life interaction, rather than damaging it or replacing it all together.

This is a conversation at least every social media user needs to be having. Questioning the negative effects of social media is so important because it isn't just about connection and community anymore. It's low-key been taken to the extreme to where we obsess over those likes and followers and "friends". You can hide behind a screen and be only the highlights of your life. This, whether we're aware of it or not, can deteriorate our own self image, feeling like our actual life isn't good enough. Unfortunately this is one among many problems having a plethora of knowledge of other peoples' lives and being able to "stay connected" causes. Not to mention how this impacts a child's necessary development of social skills. Man. Anyway, thanks for making this video and continuing an important conversation!

great documentary! It is interesting to hear people having this problem. I started using social media in 2016, and I always tried to find a purpose for each network I signed up for. I produce content, and I consume a little. I always use more time on creation then on consuming the life of others. But it is also great to see what people did in the past when you want to get an update of your friends. It's also a great possibility to learn a little bit about new people you meet. If they share some of their ideas, you can already connect in a different way. We started using this medium in a wrong way and now we have to deal with the problems.

I just wish social media didn’t exist :( It ruined a lot of my teenage years and now at 21 I’ve quit everything except KZbin- but I feel even lonelier than ever because everyone is on social media and not actually socialising. Thanks for this documentary!

This is NO unintended consequence but completely 100% about restructuring human behavior to a point of dependincy on artificial adulation. Digital addiction has always been directed at youth this is psychological warfare. Kids are having withdrawal just like a junky this is an assault on human relationships no accident. The 11 year old boy in the red shirt was really the only conscious one at the table he DOESN'T require other people to tell him he matters! Fantastic that he gives 0 shits about what his buddies post how many likes He lives in real time.

Casey makes always a good point about things, as for Beme it had a good idea, but i think people like the non-human idealizing part of social media more.

You know what? All these kids with FOMO have the world at their fingertips, able to get themselves a view of the world that is unprecedented. If they would just loot at what is happening in Venezuela today, where people threaten to starve and want to flee their own country, they would get a little perspective. Instead they overdose on selfindulgence. That's poetic justice for you right there.

I tell my kids...none of this matters. Only people who by blood or marriage can hurt you or let you care. Hurt people Hurt People. Nobody should hurt and nobody should hurt. It’s all for nothing. None of this matters. Hug those who need and need those who hug. The rest can troll on troll island and grow up to be grumpy cat lady covered in piss and fur old and decrepit and miserable that they did not just smile and care. Yeah. Only by blood and marriage can you be hurt and only by friendship can you learn the difference.
