In my experience Colin the most elegant and seemingly straight forward looking parts often require the most forethought. Hats and off to you mate I see why so many safety beers are required...

Over-complication at it's finest. Love it mate :D
@105colin4 жыл бұрын
cheers mate, I should probably pull myself back a bit or this thing is never going to get finished, that was a ridiculous amount of time to spend on what was essentially 4 brackets, but, i don't see that happening

@@105colin Haha. It is great to watch, and at least from this side of the screen, I am not sure if I want to see this or Binky ever finished ;) . Bring on the over complications.

Great work as always, if you want a touch more give in the muffler, you can get some high temp thin rubber strip that can wrap on the inside of the clamp between the muffler and the clamp.
@105colin4 жыл бұрын
Great idea, Will have to track some down, i have some rubber mat but didn't want to use it as was worried about the temp factor

So damn impressed I can't even express it... your videos are addicting. One question though, shouldn't the flexi section be between the part of the exhaust that's fixed to the engine and the part of the exhaust fixed to the chassis? My untrained logic tells me that after the flex pipe any mounts should be to the chassis, not the engine.
@105colin3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, appreciate it. Those flex joints have very limit movement, they are really just designed to help out with thermal expansion and vibration, rather than provide lots of articulation. After a huge amount of issues braking headers on my previous rally car I learnt you won't to keep the exhaust mounted on the engine for as long as possible

Impressive!

on that last muffler mount arrangement. I wonder if you would have used one of the T bolt pins as the place the mount attached to. Rotate the T clamp around the muffler until it is close to the frame. Make a new T clamp pin that it is a U shape. One end goes in the clamp and the other end into the rubber bush on the frame. Then you wouldn't have had to reinforce the thin part of the clamp and all of the stress would have been distributed through the strongest pat of the assembly.
@105colin4 жыл бұрын
I thought about something like that, Initially i had envisioned a lot more movement in the muffler and was worried about clearance between the clamp and the body/frame, if i had spun it around, turned out it probably would have been OK. Also the bolt for the clamp is only 6mm, needs to be small diameter to clear the muffler, at the moment its in pure tension, so all good, if I'd used one of the pins to mount the muffler, with the offsett to the side the mount needs to clear the body that 6mm bolt would end up getting a torque applied to it and go into bending. Its a good idea though and you could get it to work
@brianbob75144 жыл бұрын
@@105colin Well, it is always easy to think of something different when you aren't there. Your solution looks really great. Do you think those bushings can take that heat? They seem closer to the muffler than in their "normal" locations. I also thought you would hang the small mufflers off of the exhaust manifold flange so that the exhaust system could be more of a separate unit but I think that wouldn't have been as compact as coming up from the transmission. Awesome work!
@105colin4 жыл бұрын
@@brianbob7514 I think they'll be fine, there's a pretty big air gap and not much much metal to conduct the heat. Thought about hanging off the manifold, but one of the reasons for the second rubber mount was to reduce the stresses on the manifold itself. I've had a very bad run with breaking manifolds on the 105, had to weld them up at nearly every rally, granted the v6 should run a lot smoother, but it's scarred me for life
@brianbob75144 жыл бұрын
Colin Byrne I guess those rubber parts hold up to welding so they should be okay. Can’t wait for the next episode.

Have you had thoughts about an engine steady bar to one of the heads to reduce engine motion and consequent exhaust movement? REPLY
@105colin4 жыл бұрын
Yep, getting a engine steady/torque reaction bar, i was just waiting until i had a better idea what i was doing with the inlet manifold as they both be getting very close to each other

@regalheros3474 жыл бұрын
@@105colin This car is more than the usual You Tube build; it will get thrashed around the roads of Tasmania when finished. At 950kg/225kW the power to weight should be a lot better than an Alfa GTV, 1200kg/150kW, so the hammering will be at a much higher rate. Are my numbers close? I've added 100kg for roll-cage etc and guessed the power. I built a Cobra replica in the nineties and it was not especially light considering its size (1200kg); not sure about the Stratos. Another great video. Thanks.
@105colin4 жыл бұрын
Correct it well get thrashed! I think your numbers are close, the alfa was a but lighter, around 1050, and the stratos should be better than that. Should be a lot of fun anyway
