Draw a line around the Steerer, use a fine tooth saw and cut. Start your cut and progressively drop the heal of the handle and you'll cut straight, working the saw back and forth straight, helps if you hold the work peice securely. Cut 1/8" below the Stem height. Dress with a file. Job done. No need for any fancy tools. Wear gloves and a mask, carbon is absorbed by your body.

Thanks, I was trying to figure out where I need to cut the steerer relative to the stem; sounds like the answer is about 3mm below. Edit: Oh yeah, I just found the Specialized user manual and it says exactly that: 3mm below the top of the stem.

Hi Mitch! The mechanic at my LBS cut my expansion plug too short because they couldn’t fit it in. Is it going to be ok? I have the fork steerer tube uncut and using the full spacers.

There should be literature on what will work and what won’t. Remember, the only purpose of it is to take the slack and play out of your headset bearings….

Did you keep it like that or lowered it later on?

I kept it that way for a bit… in hindsight I should have lowered things slightly.

I've been looking for instructions on removing the newer style fork steer tube expansion plug. I have the basic setup with the same stem. I cut my tube a bit higher and put a spacer on top of the stem. I may change my mind and go with a flush with the stem top cap, which means cutting the steer tube lower. However, the plug must come out for that. Do you have any tips on removing the plug?

I'm glad it helped... You have to unscrew the nut, then smack it down with a mallet if I remember correctly, which will push the expansion plug down, loosening everything off. It's been a few months since I did it, and can't completely remember LOL.

@MitchOnTwoWheels Thanks! I especially liked the smashing down with a mallet. If I decide to alter the height, I'll give it a try.

@MitchOnTwoWheels I have another question about routing the rear brake line. Per the Specialized manual for the Allez, I routed the brake line over the bottom-bracket (BB) shell. I'm sure the SL7 routing method is similar. Going over the BB shell sure was tight and required a hard pull of the line through that area. Hope it didn't pinch or kink the line. I guess I'll find out when pulling the rear brake lever. It would've been easier to route under the BB shell. However, this would mean the line is exposed to potential debris impacts. As an engineer, I always look at the worst case. Maybe I shouldn't in this case. When routing the rear brake line, did you go over or under the BB shell?

@@gnatman1102 I love how specific your questions are… A great bike owner (or perhaps engineer 😂). I went over the BB with the rear brake cable. I think it’s tight as to prevent slop/knocking while you ride around (my best guess anyway). 😃

@MitchOnTwoWheels Thanks for the compliment! 🙂 Now that I have it routed, I may just leave it alone. On another item, I went with a 5 mm spacer above the stem. When I measured for the fork steerer tube cut, I measured 3 mm below the point where the top of the spacer met the tube, allowing proper gap for top cap preload. Per Specialized, they say don't go more than 3 mm lower. So, I got all anal about the 3 mm gap. When cutting the tube, I neglected the width of the blade and ended up with a 4.2 mm gap. I took it to the LBS for an opinion, and they said it's within their tolerance. They said it's a legal protection. Just make sure the cap can apply the proper preload. After getting back home, it hit me. I think the 3 mm maximum drop refers to if one wants to go top cap flush with the stem. If one cuts more than 3 mm below that point, they risk not having enough tube material behind the upper portion of the stem clamp.

Is it compatible in mechanical?

Nope.

Most of the black part of the expander seems to serve no purpose...? Why not cut it off and just keep the top 'nut' part?

I’m sure there’s a purpose to anchor it maybe?
