When putting back Needles..doesn't every Needle have the same End point on each needle..for uniformity..another words they all stop at a certain Gap..when re installed..I can't imagine sliding them up or down to match Light..I just ordered white Gauge faces in white..they come with notches to line up on installation..I just noted when ordering that they where 160 MPH..and 6500 Rpm..etc..my set up will be Awesome..white Guage faces..with Green shining thru..Will have an interesting effect.. Much like $200K C30 Polstar does..kinda

While doing this..can 1 change to > NEO 4mm GHP dash Instrument LED bulbs... I believe there are 4 of them...if desired.. ON THE back of Speedo.. 4 bulbs I Believe..that can be replaced correct? RSVP

You can solder in new LEDs, yes. Not sure on the exact type or quantity.

Hi will the cluster display the miles of the car it was out of or will it show my cars miles?

If you swap the whole cluster, it will show the mileage of the car it came out of. One option is to buy a cluster with slightly more miles than your car currently has, then swap it over once you reach that mileage. Otherwise, the legal alternative is to swap the gauge faces. Otherwise it is considered tampering with the vehicle's odometer.

Ah, I didn't know that R-Design was swappable. Cool. I have 2006 as well but S40N but should be the same. A nice little upgrade visually. Any other upgrades like this that are doable.. looking for "plug and pray"

Hi, I know you from swedespeed and I've really enjoyed watching your projects throughout the years so far, I've learnt many things from you on how to take apart/dismantle components on these cars. Which leads me to asking you a Q if I may: The illumination of the stalk on my RPM gauge went out, do you happen to know what type of bulb/diode I should be buying as a replacement? And wether that light source is welded in the cluster circuit board, or is just plugged in? I'd like to go in there fully prepared in order not to remove and dismantle the cluster twice. Thanks!

I am not sure what bulbs, but I do know that they are all soldered in place.

The right side gauges on my S40 are also not lighting up, only the left side is lit as well as all the messages and symbols. We’re you able to fix the right side gauge lights? What bulbs and were the welded in? Do you have any advice?

@@DobraLLC Hi, unfortunately I haven't solved this issue yet, partially because I know nothing about reflow soldering, which is the correct method of fixing the replacement LEDs to the PCB, I think I'll have to pay someone to do this delicate job on my my behalf. But I have however gathered some information about what LEDs are to be used: PLCC-2 type LEDs, 3.4V forward current 120° view angle between 700-800 mcd dimentions 3.2mm L x 2.8mm W x 1.9mm H White color /not green!/ as the greenish color of the cluster is due to a green light filter built in it, but all 6 PCB LEDs emit white light. Their exact designation is: Broadcom HSMW-A100-V40J1 .. these have been proven to be the correct replacement LEDs, google for how to get these, they are very cheap, and most likely you'll be directed to Mouser, which is a gigantic electronic components distributor. Keep me informed on how you get along, best of luck! 👍🏻

Would it be possible to change the lighting inside the cluster? Since you like purple wouldn't it be cool for it to glow purple instead of green? :)

Technically, anything is possible. But this would require carefully removing the LEDs and soldering in new ones. The lights are white, it's the gauge faces that illuminate green (or white for some C70 models). Since the lighting is white, you could have custom gauge faces made with any color film for different illumination colors. However, quality custom gauges can cost nearly $200+, so that's why I choose to just go with a factory upgrade.

Hello, I love your V50/c30 videos. I recently bought a 2005 v50 T5 and I am slowly getting into performing upgrades while replacing worn parts. My question: how would I go about(if it’s even possible) replacing the LEDs in the gauge cluster. They are extremely dim ??? Thanks :)

Swapping the LEDs require carefully soldering in replacements. Someone on SwedeSpeed had done this and may have a write-up out there. Before replacing them, there is a dial on the light switch module that controls the gauge and center console screen display brightness. This may be turned down or damaged if the lighting seems excessively dim.

Could I just take off the fascia and the clear plastic rather than remove whole cluster From the car? I just want to fit a replacement disk for kmh to mph conversion.

You probably could, but it's a lot easier with it fully removed and it doesn't take much more work to get the cluster out of the car.

You can put them on at any angled, which can make it challenging to get them realigned perfectly.

I have a 2005 S40 and the right side gauges don’t light up for the RPM and engine temperature. Would you know if it’s bad bulbs or could it be something else? Any advice on how to diagnose it?

If only some of the back lighting is out, then my first guess would be burnt out bulbs.. They're LED that are soldered in. They can be replaced and changed out for different colors, it's just a bit involved.

I did not. If I remember correctly, these were "built in" so they couldn't easily be transferred over.

It's not a direct swap, if that's what you're asking. With a standalone ECU, you could probably get move of it to function. But with a standalone ECU, you should really just go for an aftermarket digital readout.

Hi There, I was wondering how you fixed the new style dial rings to the gauge plastic. I know you said you had to shave them down because of the curve of the plastic, but I'm stuck on fixing them down. The clips don't line up to any holes behind the dial faces. Hopefully you can shed some light on this?

I used a tacky adhesive on the back of the black rings, which hold the outer silver rings in place. A small dab of super glue might work as well.

If you swap the blue-R display cluster, is it possible to update it with the ebay VIDA/DICE? And do you think I could just change the blue C30R blue faces and put them in my '07 C70 without any modifcation?

You would need a subscription to VIDA to be able to program it and even then, I'm not sure what all is involved. I know a few people have tried unsuccessfully to update the mileage; probably because it's considered illegal to alter. The best advice I have is to find an R-design cluster with slightly higher mileage than your car currently has. Once you hit that mileage mark, swap the gauges assemblies and it'll be close enough to never be an issue.

The only problem will be the mileage will be mileage on the old cluster- no other communication problems? And could the blue faces just be popped out and placed on my old C70 cluster? No, the only option would be to create a completely standalone system, or look into the Blue Power head unit.

Hi, do you know if you can fit facelift lights from a 2009 v50 on a 2006?

The headlights? As long as it's halogen to halogen or bixenon to bixenon, they plug right in and will work. The fenders will also line up, but you'll need a facelift front bumper as well. For taillights, the facelift lights are a direct swap, but they are about 1 inch shorter than pre-facelift, so you'll want a facelift rear bumper as well.

The gauges? Direct swap. The C70 gauges look nice with their white back lighting. Though if you swap the whole gauge assembly and not just swapping the dials and faces, then your odometer will be off.

@@DaveWshh No, the front end is not a direct swap between the C70 and the V50. The bumper mounting points and hood are the same, but the lights and fenders are different and would not be interchangable. You could however, merge the C70 and V50 front bumpers so that you could still use the V50 headlights and fenders.

You cannot buy just the face, it's an entire unit. I had a spare set of gauges from my C30 that I used. There was a company that made custom faces for Volvos, but they were German based and they no longer appear to be in business. Swapping for any different gauge cluster will require reprogramming to transfer over your mileage data. While the gauge should still function, the mileage will either reset itself to 0 or continue counting from the mileage of the donor car. There are also two different style gauges, one has two wiring connectors, one only has one. No idea the reasoning behind which is which. My 2004 S40 had one connector. My 2008 C30 has one connector. My 2006 V50 has two connectors. My friend's 2009 C30 has two connectors.

if you replace the whole gauge with anothers car, will the car start or do you need to reconfigure it to your keys?

The will run just fine and your RPM and speedometer should read accurately as well. The only problem is that the mileage will not display your car's current mileage. The dealer would need to reprogram your cluster to read accurate mileage based on what is saved on your ECU.

That I'm not sure, but I know if you disconnect the gauges or even the center console controls, the key fob might not work and other various electrical components won't turn on/off. But I know a few people have swapped out their entire gauge clusters without any problems other than the mileage being off.

For that, I cannot confirm. 2008+ removed the clock element from the gauge display and usually has two wiring connectors on the back, where 2004-2007 only have one. It might work! I just can't say for certain.

If the gauge cluster is out, it could be a loose ground or it could also be something disconnected with the radio / waterfall console. All the electronic components need to be connected for the gauges to come on.

@@jimmyzavala844 I can't say exactly what part it could be. I would start with checking the wiring connections to the gauge itself. Then trace those back to other components. If you have access to VIDA, you can probably pinpoint exactly which component is not receiving power.

As long as the V50 bumper is also from 2008-2012, it will be a direct fit. You can also swap for a pre-facelift S40/V50 bumper, but this will require retrofitting the older style lights as well.

The gauge faces? At this time, there are no aftermarket options available anymore, so the only solution is swapping different faces from Volvo options, which requires buying complete Volvo gauge assemblies.
