The point at which Coronation plays is one of the biggest "Did… did I win…?" moments I’ve ever experienced in a game cause you come down from the emotional high of beating the final boss only to remember the damage he wanted to do has already been done. You didn’t stop him, you took revenge.

Cascadia is in Ruins. The War has been Won. The Deal will be Honored [CONTRACT COMPLETE] \\Funds will be Distributed\\ In Ace Combat, power is a force to create legends, to save those who need saving and find the tomorrow where a brighter future lies, people fight to become heroes and arrive home with honor.... In Project Wingman power is a force to be abused and the weak are victims of heroes that fight for petty glory and selfish paychecks.... Kings aren't there to protect, they're there to be feared. When the Coronation begins, everyone bows. Either from allegiance or to keep their heads.

Just for a bit of closure concerning the ending - The second to last mission of Project Wingman is essentially winning the "final battle" and reclaiming the capital city. The entire thing is swept out from beneath you by the final boss (Crimson 1, whose other fight tracks are Peacekeeper I and II). Crimson 1 wipes the slate clean using (basically) nuclear weaponry, and all of the characters that you've come to know and love are presumed dead. The tone shifts (just as it did after Consequence of Power) from the triumphant and heroic themes in Presidia, to Kings. The final battle with Crimson 1 is where Kings plays, and the fight is just as dramatic, intense, and emotional as Kings sounds. In the context of the game, Kings is a song about grief and revenge, two extremely powerful emotions. Throughout the fight, the tone of Crimson 1's dialogue grows more and more desperate, emotional, and hateful (which is mirrored in Kings, to an extent). Towards the end of the fight, the game does something interesting (at least in my opinion): Crimson 1's health bar is three segments, and destroying the third gives the impression that the fight is over. The indicator saying that you destroyed the enemy pops up, accompanied by a large explosion, and Kings fades out. But then, Coronation opens, and the fight continues. Throughout this final phase, Crimson 1's dialogue reveals that he's been totally and completely mentally broken by the war, by loss, and by his own failures. All of it, the music, the dialogue, the context, it all feels exceptionally raw, emotional, and powerful. When you finally kill him and end the fight, the music swells, and he expresses his final wishes--for the player character to remember him. You were right about it not being a happy ending; it's incredibly hollow. The raw, unfiltered emotions of it all, along with the intensity of the fight, leave the player exhausted, which I think is intentional and fitting. I know that you said again and again that you wouldn't try to guess the context on a lot of the songs, but when you did, you were very close nearly every time--here, especially so. While it's hard to express how the songs in this game match with the scenes and how the music improves the emotion of every scene, I don't think it's entirely necessary to try to explain it. You recognize that there's some things you have to experience, and Project Wingman is one of them. That being said, you've done a pretty great job, and I think that both speaks to your understanding of the stories music can tell and the quality of each composition. I've had a blast watching you react to each and every Project Wingman track, and I'll be sure to stick around for more tracks and different games in the future. Cheers.

You're right on the money about Kings "crossing the line from hearing into feeling". It's not about getting a catchy melody stuck in your head (like e.g. Showdown), it's about conveying the despair and chaos of a final battle with the world falling apart around you.

This mission is the final "surprise" boss that comes straight after Presidia. You don't even get a mission briefing for it the first time you try it. Coronation is the last phase of the boss, where he's both in denial but accepting defeat, but still fighting. BTW, "surprise" in quotes because Project Wingman is a love letter to PS2 trilogy of Ace Combat, "there's always an extra surprise mission" and most early players was expecting this moment.

Kings - When Leitmotifs Collide Coronation - We won, guys! Too bad half the planet is a smoking crater...but, we won. EDIT: I'm one of those people that plays a game, and if I love the music, I hunt down the OST and put it in my playlist. If I find myself skipping a song more often than not, I take it out. And with Kings: I took it out. When you're in the game and all these events and characters are swirling in your head, the song tears you to pieces. When you're driving to the grocery store, it's not there. So, I can relate.

Saw Jose Pavli tweet out this video and had to check it out! Presidia, by all rights, is the final mission of the game. You've clawed your way through impossible odds from Red Sea, having achieved victory in a Naval engagement that by all conventional wisdom, you should have lost. You had to win in Red Sea in order to achieve final victory to liberate Presidia. You can hear, feel, through the Presidia track that you're in the final stretch. That you're about to accomplish everything you've set out to achieve. You can hear the hope throughout Presidia's track. The long road that's been taken to get here. This is the finale. And just when everything has gone in your favor and the enemy is surrendering: Kings happens. You're no longer finishing the final battle. The battle, the war you've been fighting as just been cleansed in fire and what you've been fighting over is gone. Everything is consumed by flames and there is only two things left. You and the final enemy that just cast the world in flames. You're no longer fighting for a greater purpose. You're now in a Dogfight in the truest sense of the term. You're both locked in a phone booth, knives out, maneuvering to thrust your blade into your enemy's jugular, to bleed them out before they can bleed you. There is no quarter to give, there is no mercy to show. One of you gets to walk out of that phone booth while the other drowns in their own blood, and the one that walks out will be crowned King. As the victor is being crowned, you're reminded that this victory you've achieved means nothing. Everything is already gone, and the one that took everything from you? You're reminded that you've taken everything away from them too. Their hopes for the future. Their dreams for a better world, just not in the way you envisioned it. Just not in the way you wanted the future to be. And with that reminder, your Coronation over a land that's turned to ash is complete. In all my years of gaming, I have yet to experience to tonal whiplash that occurs between Presidia and Kings. Nothing has ever made my jaw drop quite like Project Wingman's final mission has, going from a well earned victory in to being crowned a King of a burning land. I've really enjoyed seeing other Musicians comment on Jose Pavli's work on Project Wingman. The brilliance of Project Wingman's soundtrack is that you don't even need the context in which the tracks occur, you just get it. Even if you don't have the full picture of what's going on in a specific track, you already know what it's conveying, what it's telling you. Every single "reaction" video I've seen on Project Wingman tracks all nail the same concepts and feelings, especially with Kings. I've yet to really encounter a soundtrack that does it like Project Wingman does. It was also the first soundtrack I tracked down and purchase (which you can do on Jose Pavli's Bandcamp account!).

Kings and Coronation are incredibly powerful and moving tracks. It's truly incredible just how much emotion flows through these songs, especially considering how silly the story of Project Wingman really is when you think about it too hard. Jose Pavli really is an incredible composer. I cannot wait to see what he does in the future.

Of course a game that's a love letter to Ace Combat needs a final boss theme to match! Also Kings transitions into Coronation when you've essentially won the fight and are now chasing down the limping boss to deliver the final blow. (I have some gameplay footage of the final boss on my channel wink wink) And yeah, the ending is melancholic. It's like a 'you've won, but at what cost?' situation where you're flying over the ruins of the nuked city you were just trying to liberate

Kings is what made me play the game and it absolutely rewards you emotionally by playing the ending and having the last dance. Absolutely amazing piece . About Coronation you're spot on, it suppose to give you this hollow and nostalgic feeling that has this bitersweet feeling and a taste of defeat despite winning. You won... but at what cost? Thanks again for the reaction, love your honest opinion and its what brings me back.

Pavli offers a decidedly much darker and more somber tone altogether here when compared to Ace Combat's selection of finale tracks. There's nothing triumphant about the dogfight with Crimson 1. Thousands in Presidia, the city your squadron is contracted to fight for, are already dead and you're the only one left flying who's capable enough to tear the wings of a delusional broken man for good.

I remember the first time I had finished PW and I thought how everyone in the game was lost, it hurt cause the characters (although they were background noise) were growing on me and I was attached. I then remembered about a snarky character you can have that’s present if you choose certain planes. So I did it all again, having that side character be my passenger until the end. I was so focused on the fight, I never noticed that they had ejected from my plane in the first few minutes. When the fight was over, the day was won… I looked at my cockpit for the first time in at least 6 minutes and noticed… I even failed to save my back seater. Coronation was playing and I felt actual grief. It was ROUGH. One of those “sit there and watch the credits roll without moving” sort of moments.
@evilbabai7083
@evilbabai7083 Жыл бұрын
She didn't ejected, she just passed out form over-Gs. And if you'd finished the game on the Mercenary difficulty, you would've known that some of Sicario has survived, including Hitman team. P.S. when ejection is triggered, the whole crew is elected, you can't stay in a cockpit even if it wasn't you (and you won't want to do this anyway since you won't be able to fly a jet without a canopy).

@@1cooooolguy because it's an indie game and it's fine to cut the corners? Why make a collapsed WSO model of you just can remove it? And, as I've said, there is no way to eject separately. If you listen closely, she struggles a lot throughout the dogfight and finally breathes out she can't keep up and that she's sorry before we hear her crumbling. That's because WSO is more vulnerable to sharp turns: pilot is in full control of his maneuvers so his brain can connect vestibular signals with brain commands and following plane feedback and pilot himself can start AGSM (anti-G straining maneuvers, to redirect bloodstream towards upper body) in advance, while WSO only able to react plane movements resulting disorientation and AGSM delay, so in case of intense maneuvering WSO will get dizzy and hypoxic quicker than pilot of the same health and strength, and effect can build up the longer they experience sharp high-G maneuvers, eventually leading to a loss of consciousness (which is exactly what happened, since Monarch was pushed to his limits, therefore it was just a matter of time before Prez gave up).
@hresvelgr7193
@hresvelgr7193 Жыл бұрын
@@evilbabai7083 That's actually not true. Prez's model does in fact slump over in the cockpit after phase one finishes. As for ejection it actually varies between aircraft. On the F-14 you can eject the RIO but not the pilot. And you can actually fly most planes without the canopy but it won't be comfortable
@evilbabai7083
@evilbabai7083 Жыл бұрын
@@hresvelgr7193 that was just my best guess, since I was pretty sure that she's still there, regardless of how it's visualised, and never bothered to check closely. And, yes, I forgot that some older aircraft had a feature of separate rejection, because there are no modern planes I'm aware of that doesn't eject the whole crew when one of members initiates the sequence. And once the canopy is off for some reason, even landing the plane safely would becomes a challenge, so saying it's uncomfortable is an understatement - dogfighting like this is nearly impossible, since it not only exposes the pilot to an extreme wind during the maneuvers, but also hugely impacts the plane aerodynamics.

Love the symbolism with the context of these songs. The two best pilots head to head for the last time going beyond their capabilities until one falls. And afterwards the realisations. Kings sounds perfect as an almost the end song, it feels like the moment in game is a now or never type of moment. I love the string melody at 2:45 it sounds awesome, I like how more and more gets added which build that tension wonderfully. There is some emotional sections in this which is a really nice way to add to a song. I just noticed that the beat is very driving and motivating, I have a sneaking suspicion this works perfectly in game. Great dynamics going on. I like this but not super strongly. Coronation sounds devastating, judging by the context it fits very well. The cello sounds super mournful, the string sounds sharp and painful (emotionally). It's a moving piece and I generally like it.

Project Wingman is like a long hard-fought chess game that you finally win by checkmate, but your opponent stands up, picks up the chess board and smashes you across the face with it. Cue: Kings The chess game is not a ferocious fist fight with the both of you clawing and kicking at each other, despite your opponent throwing everything he can at you, you manage to gain the upper hand. Cue: Coronation You begin landing the finishing blows and finally win the fight, standing bloodied and gasping for breath over the mangled body of your opponent and the shattered, somehow burning remains of the chessboard.

This final mission really highlights the futility of war and conflict. Yes, your side supposedly "won" but the nation of Cascadia is in literal ruins, death counts are in the literal millions, and the entire world just experienced a second Calamity. Nobody truly won, all that happened is one side of the conflict was destroyed but at a price nobody could have fathomed

I've said this before about these specific songs and I'll say it again here. If you ask me, these songs weren't written to be the final boss theme of the game, or even necessarily from your perspective. You play as Monarch, a mercenary. You aren't necessarily a good person. The person you're fighting, Crimson 1, has been REPEATEDLY unable to stop you, so much that it caused significant damage to his mental state. He's become obsessed with defeating you, and it's driven him quite mad, so much so that he basically did the Volcanic equivelant of Nuking a city just to get you in a 1v1 fight. These songs are written from his perspective. This song isn't *His* final boss theme. *It's yours* . He is the Hero of the story, in his eyes, and you are his final boss. It's tragic, really, considering how far gone Crimson 1 really was at the end. He was delusional, to the point he began projecting and blaming the ENTIRE WAR on you, and you alone. Not even in the most advanced plane in the world could he stop you. Nothing could. You won the game... but the Hero lost.

This version of Kings definitely suffers by not having the battle ambience of the constant missile warnings, the sound of popping flares as you desperately try to foil the oncoming swarm of missiles, and the rythmic bass of the pop and hum of railguns as they're chain fired at you and rush by as you twist through their contrails.

Alert, spoilers ahead. "You're a slave to history. Even after Calamity, you fight against the only order that can guarantee the safety of your people." After all what happened in this war, you can't be ready for what awainting you in this battle. All your wingmens is wounded or dead, your WSO already pased out beacuse of G-Loc, AWACS downed and ground forces of your PMC wiped out. "You, solely, are responsible for this." You feel only rage. But this fight cannot be win by rage. Even the music tells you, the player, that. "Me and you now. No distractions, no wingmen, no war. Just me and you. Whoever wins is the best pilot. Every safety's coming off, no second chances." Cacadia is in ruins. The "Peace" is just a word. But you can't run or retreat. Beacuse there is nowhere to. This not fight for winning war, this fight for title "The King of the Skies". And only true "Ace" will leave this graveyard alive. "Monarch...when you hear the thunder...when the storm...comes for you...remember me..." And you won. But at what cost? . . . You wont recieve answear. Titles.
