In 1989 I did same job on my 78 FJ40 , a bad freaking memory well forgotten until viewing this video lol. Doing job was nightmare on many levels. Leaf knowledge lacked & parts were hard to find in my area. Rear sag was terrible as well , I had to add 5” shacks on back to correct sag which made me prime target for tickets from police. I loved my FJ40 anyway but suspension was pain.

I'm sure you've figured this out by now, but you need as much slack in the entire leaf spring as possible. What you have done by first installing the rear mount and then the U bolts is to remove all chance of aligning the shackle holes. It's best to wait to tighten anything until all bolts are loosely installed. U bolts last so you can shift the spring sideways, twist it, etc. for shackle alignment. I feel your pain though...Just when I think I've done every wrong thing possible I seem to invent another one. Hang tough and keep the entertainment coming. By the way, that heavy thing with the wooden handle...it's for pounding on stuff. That soft thing on the end of your arm...that's for holding the heavy thing. Much less painful that way.
@projectwrongway91275 жыл бұрын
Good advice! I’m going to tighten u-bolts last this time, I’ll be keeping things loose.
@kvanoort5 жыл бұрын
I'd also suggest doing both front leaf springs at the same time versus one leaf corner at a time. Start with Front Spring Hangers on both sides, then both front Shackles and finally U-bots to axle on both sides. By having one of the old springs still in place you are fighting different sized parts.
@projectwrongway91275 жыл бұрын
kvanoort that’s going to happen for episode 4 potentially, it’s the last logical way to do it lol. Thank you for the feedback!

I recommend that you invest in a pry bar to use between the frame (shackle mount) and leaf spring to make the bolts go in easier.

Unbolt u bolts. Take all the weight off the leaf springs by raising the differential. Then you can raise the leaf spring into position on the front. Try using a brass hammer when hitting the pins or put a piece of wood so you dont damage the pins.

The trick is to use ratchet straps to suspend the axle from the frame. You need to treat both sides as one. Remove the old springs entirely. Then you completely attach the new springs with the axle suspended above them. Rear front spring pivot and front shackles on both sides. Then you drop the axle into the springs once in place. You're going to need larger jack stands going forward. Takes me easily less than a day to install a complete suspension. Also, ih8mud > facebook whatever the f**k.

Good chance you're going to need a longer brake line. The center flex/soft line, front and rear. Hate to see you extend the suspension and lose your brakes. I have a 78 fj40 with a 4" lift, definitely needed longer lines. Keep going you're doing a great job. Why did you switch from anit-inversion to barbell shackles? Check your caster angle after your done as well before you cut the u-bolts off to make sure you won't be wandering all over the road. You may/will need tapered shims between the axle and springs. You started down an unending road of suspension...
@projectwrongway91275 жыл бұрын
Hey! I switched from the anti inversion to the barbell only because the barbell appeared to be very stout. I might switch back seeing as how I’m doing suspension stuff for ever. I hear you on the brake lines, it’s like a looming black cloud. I know it needs to be done, but I’m putting it off until I get the leafs ironed out. I’m looking into the caster issues, I know the HFS leafs have an insert in the pass rear leaf for the lean issues, but I also know other things come up so the tapered shims will be on order just in case. Thanks for the feedback man, it’s a uphill battle with a brain like mine. So any advice helps!
