Fantastic guide, 10/10. I just got my server up and running! One extra tip I have relating to mods and sandbox settings: After setting up your server, before configuring your sandbox settings and mods, you can launch regular PZ and select 'Host' and then 'create new settings'. Give these new settings a name other than "servertest", just to stay organized. Using the GUI, you can now change all the settings you want in Sandbox, and configure your mods how you want them. This is a bit more intuitive than copying the MOD ID and number and pasting them into the notepad, this essentially does that step for you. Now, you can locate the new settings you have created, rename them to "servertest" and overwrite all of the existing files (in other words, replace the files the server created with your new ones, but make sure you retain the same name). This makes it easier to keep track of your mods, and also makes adding/removing mods in the future easier as you can always just backup and overwrite the servertest.ini file. After this, I would still recommend double checking the password and public/private options like this video suggests.

@@DaCouchWarrior No, without the router's port forward you can't. You could try joining the game, sometimes it's not necessary to do so. Otherwise ask the owner for access (if possible)

Just a heads up for people getting a "server not responding" even with port forwarding, if you are trying to connect to your server from the same machine, do NOT use your public IP to connect. Use your IPv4 address! Public IP is for friends to connect!

I can connect to my own server just fine using the IPv4, but the server says "not responding" to my friends when they try with my pub ip. My Pub IP matches the one the server says in the commandpromt. Even when I invite them to join through steam they get the "not responding" - any idea what to do?

For people having trouble with map mods. Specifically rv interiors the line of text is in the sever setting .ini not sandbox. Map mods need to be added maulally. The way I did it was to set up s test sever with my own private game. Then copied the map list from the ini on my personal pc. Added to the separate sever pc. BOOM worked. Hope it helps someone running sever one a pc without zomboid or steam installed and running.

@@skuzzy115 I just wanted to add a quick update. I ran into a snag at 7:20, apparently I need to put my LOCAL IP, rather than the IP found on the website. When I tried finding the IP on the website, I was constantly met with a server not responding error. As of writing this message I have not tested with one of my friends yet, but is it possible that the host of the server needs to use their local IP to connect, and the friends joining need to use the public IP?

One thing I do want to point out at 6:29 - at least for my personal setup (I am using ATT fiber with the wi-fi disabled and the modem connected to a Netgear R6700). I was not able to set up my server with my public IP, my router has an Internet IP address set to it (login to the router IP admin console>advanced tab>Internet port section on the right) which turned out to be my true public IP according to my router is setup to be this Internet IP address. This is for anyone struggling with this step here as I did.

Great video, Just thought id stop people from making the same mistake as me. The files he asks you to delete at the start of the vid contain the save for world saves so if you are wanting to turn a local server into a dedicated one you need to save these files to yous later. :)

If you're having trouble with port forwarding you can set it up via the Windows firewall settings without signing in to your router. I'm also wondering when we are offline do I just close the server cmd?? Does it automatically save the game? Do I manually have to wipe server whenever we're ready?

Hello there, greetings from germany. awesome guide! i struggeld hard on the port forwarding. in the end it wasnt even my bad. my internet runs via. DS-Lite. So you dont have a puplic ipv4. @@JrMonkeyYT Is your server hosting multiple people? if not and it's only for you and a freind. then just make a multiplayer game in the game and subscribe to the mods and add them. You are doing the exact same thing but manually. If you dont follow these steps exact you will have problems. Dont skip steps. Also need to load the server every time you add a new mod so it can grab the mod. You also have to make sure the info meaning the mod ID is exact, if you are manually typing the ID you will have errors, copy and paste.

6 hours later, my 16261 port is still not visible. I'm able to see my own server via my IPv4 address but when looking at it with my public ip, it isn't available. I've tried everything I found online and this video and at the end no luck. I'm starting to think It's Bell Aliant in Canada that doesn't allow port forwarding on those ports.

Hi man, I apologize for my English, I'm Brazilian and I'm using Google Translate, lol. I was able to open the server and connect using my IPv4, my friends were also able to connect to my public IP to play. However, ports 16261 and 16262 remain unreachable on an open ports test site that I use to confirm. Also appeared the error "No UPnP enabled Internet gateway found, you must configure port forwarding on your gateway manually to make your server accessible from the Internet." Honestly, I don't even know how this is working, but it worked for me lol

Yes, hosting from the PZ menu only allows people to play if the host is online. Dedicated servers are online always

Just wanted to add, If you are unable to connect after port forwarding, often times your windows firewall did not allow it. I turned all of my firewall setting off and I can now join. Do this at your own risk as I have no idea what could happen but this should help.

I figured out mine, I had to port forward the ports for steam and PZ on both my router and my firewall, by adding exceptions in the inbound rules for the ports needed.

I wouldn't recommend port forwarding on your home router. I'd recommend something like Tailscale or ZeroTier. Opening up your ports allows ANYONE to attempt to get into your machine hosting your PZ server.

what are the advantages of using Steam CMD instead of the project zomboid dedicated server tool in steam? it seems like a lot of extra work and its not abundantly clear to me what the advantages over the existing tool is.

Great question! To be honest I’m not exactly sure if there are any advantages. For now, this is just one method that I know of. Feel free to use the dedicated server tool as well.

I'd like to add, the two ports you forward only need to be UDP, the cut away after you showed the ports on screen listed as TCP One question, how do you edit the sandbox settings, such as zombie damage or gas? Where is the file for this? I know how to edit these through host, but I don't see how to edit through this steamcmd process

Thank you! To edit the sandbox settings you will locate the sandboxvars config file in the server folder and edit that with any text editor.

Good question. I don’t believe there is an option for infinite gas (I could be wrong) I do know there is an option for Full, which should last you your entire play-through and more.

in the port forward section it says DMZ is disabled, 1 port forwarding rule is defined, 0 UPnP rules are active When I add a port it says Name(name of port) Protocol WAN Port LAN Port Source IP Destination IP Name - PZ Server Protocol-TCP/UDP WAN Port - 16261 LAN Port - 16262 Source IP - I dont know what to put there Destination IP - My IPv4 My friends cant join. Ive got everything up and running well, is there a way to transfer over the world and player information from a server run thru the "host" option in the mainmenu of the game? Where the servertest.ini files are i see my other ini and lua files but i dont know how to tell the server to run off of those instead.

Yes I believe this is possible however try this at your own risk since there's no guarantee there will or will not be version issues or what-not. But I believe there is a 'Saves' folder inside your Single Player Project Zomboid installation. And of course, there is 'Saves' folder inside of your Dedicated Server File structure as well. You should be able to replace your Server's Save folder, with your Singleplayer Save folder. With a little bit of googling, you can find guides with more descriptions on this. I hope this helps a bit.

Just wanted to add, If you are unable to connect after port forwarding, often times your windows firewall did not allow it. I turned all of my firewall setting off and I can now join. Do this at your own risk as I have no idea what could happen but this should help.
