A few years ago my wife and I lived aboard our 30' sailboat at The Harborage Marina in St. Pete when our first child was born. There were two other couples on our same dock who also had their first baby while living on their sailboats (30' and 34' long). We all lasted about the same amount of time: when our little guys got to about 1.5 years old each of us moved off our boats to land. This is different than cruising of course, we were simply living on sailboats at a marina. However, all of us regularly did take our sailboats out for trips up to a week or two. We REALLY didn't want to leave our sailboat live-aboard life. I think things may have been easier if we had been actually cruising where both of us could have been present all the time (vs 1 parent having to leave for work each day). However, the problem we ran into is that toddlers need LOTS of space once they start walking. Our son is turning 3 this month and the 2 bedroom house we're currently renting (with a backyard) still seems small for his boundless energy. His job seems to be to explore and dismantle everything! I think the hardest time to have a kid aboard might be when they're between about 1.5-3.5 years old. Of course anything can be done. When they're a baby it's super easy. Loved your review though and looking forward to the rest. You're putting out A+ content, imho.

Remember it's not just as kid's get older... when they are toddlers and learning to walk and through 3, 4, 5 years old. When they are so independent and want to explore. Will have to 'child-proof' many things. How easy will it be to do in each boat you look at. I have a feeling you'll know the boat when you see it. Blessings and my son and I wish you every happiness. Having sailed a Crealock 37, Hull number 17, with my father from the West Coast of the USA to Australia after a 4 year restoration, I can agree 100% with your review. It worked well for the 2 of us and is incredibly secure feeling offshore in rough weather and would do respectable milage (168nm was our best day, most in the 130-140s in 20kt trade winds) sailing on a wind vane for days without touching anything. A little slow in under 15kts of wind though, a code 0 or some other large light headsail is needed for light wind days. The lack of interior space, high loads on sheets in a blow (we found the primary winches to be too small in 25kts plus) due to being a heavy boat with enough keel and rudder to not force reefing early, and a small cockpit, 3 would be the maximum for extended cruising. I spent 3 years on a different sailboat as a child and a quarter birth each side is really what you need for a family of 4, if not double aft cabins. That separation really was important for my Sister and I to have the feeling of our own space and have some room to escape from each other.

G'day Desiree, Firstly kids are definitely teenie mate, at first, but damn, do they grow wicked fast LOL ;) I sailed this exact model of boat back in 2004 or 2005. Me uncle in the States, had a 37' Seacraft. I like the bow design. The boat is in immaculate condition. She's a beaut of a boat mate, but unfortunately, with wanting to have children and raise your kids while on passage, I reckon the 37' Seacraft is too bloody tight, there's not sufficient storage and seams small in general, IMHO ~ Especially the cockpit. Having me wife and both me sons on board during many passages and open water cruising, back when we had our 2008 Beneteau Oceanis 40' ~ unfortunately, the 40' Oceanis was too bloody tight and an uncomfortable fit, generally. I reckon a cruiser that's 42' or slightly larger, definitely makes a huge difference in space, sleeping accommodations, and obviously, the overall comfort level. That's why we upgraded, in 2012, to the Lagoon 450F. What a difference the space made. Obviously she's a multihull, not a mono! You're not packed in like sardines though, mate. Superb priority list. My firts sailboat was a 1969 Cal 29 with a gas engine roller furling on the head-sai and boom furling for the mainsail. My second and last sailboat was a New Challenger 35 Ketch which was wonderful under sail or as you said passage-making on Lake Ontario both in the US and Canada, at anchor or at the dock. She arrived in 1996 and I sold her, in 1995, to A Canadian family with 2 girls, I had 2 boys 7 & 11 when they first started sailing.. We put her, her name was Challenger, in the water April 1st every year, sailed her someplace every weekend all spring, summer and fall and pulled her November 1st. What a wonderful life.

I was going with my sister and brother-in-law to look at houses because I know a lot about home repair and though I would’ve been the end-all inspection I could point out any structural problems pretty easy. Thing is my sister and brother-in-law were looking for their third house and were in their late 40s and there were some young 20 something couples who looked fresh out of college that were looking at these quarter to half million dollar houses. Just goes to show with the right skills and the right career choices you can be very successful and very young. That or one of the families had a successful business and they hired them in at a high position with the hopes that someday they would take over the business thus ensuring their parents pensions and the kids continued success.

3:21 my boat has that incline, I never even notice it anymore. I also have a boat full of dark mahogany which does not seem that dark in sunny environments. But 2 kids?! You are going to need a 40 footer. They dont stay “teeny” long haha. That boat is beautiful though!

I have a PS with an incline and I don’t like it and have had visitors remark about it. It isn’t a make or break but it is a tip-off that the boat is a smaller volume space.

Hi Buds As a PS owner (not a 37) I think you hit the nail on the head. Another tip-off to interior volume is waterline length and PSs have comparative short waterlines for their overall length. So they are small for the deck length compared to many boats of similar vintage. The improvements that you need to this boat for offshore are not that labor intensive but costly IE a watermaker and self steering gear, for example. Those 2 items will run $10K+ but could both be installed in less than a week. You guys can for sure build a Bimini on your own for a grand. Good catch on the fuel tank mine went out a few months ago and it was a bummer getting 5 gal of diesel out of the bilge and OMG what I discovered down there!! New tank was a grand and a fiddlie day rounding up the correct parts to install it but not hard to do. Of course the pluses of a PS are rock solid construction, durable, they hold value better than most boats and in the long run that is one of the most expensive aspects of boat ownership, ask a Beneteau owner. Haha! Bernie mentioned refrigeration issues, not a problem with the right equipment. Beware of being sucked into an attractive Taiwan built boat, you will have a lot more very frustrating maintenance issues including leaks from EVERYTHING AND EVERYWHERE! Depending on the price of the PS 37 I would buy it in a heartbeat but since the guy put a bundle into it I am sure the price makes it not attractive compared to other boats in that price range. My own notes on this boat since we are looking to purchase, the cockpit is too small and yeah, small kids don't take up space, but they grow. Hey, as someone who has gone from van dwelling to a converted school bus RV to now a cruising boat all with the wife, 2 kids, and large dog there are a few points I just have to say. 1 obv PSCs are built to last beautifully for years and years. Very nice 2 almost kinda enough headroom isn't enough headroom - ask my back bro. 3 my son looked at the quarterberth and said "oooo Buttons!". This is a beautiful boat and is in amazing shape with its recent re-fit. After your last video, I googled each of the boats on your list and briefly looked them over. It reminds me of when we bought our first new car as a young couple. I owned a Mazda GLC and my wife a VW Rabbit. I did all the maintenance work and even did some light mods (to install a stereo that could thump your chest). At the Saab dealership, the sales guy lifted the hood and I said "Well...I ain't working on THAT!". It was the same when we went from our "used" 25 y.o. house to a new spec home. I knew that I would not be cutting into walls and making mods, and instead, leaving that job to people with real skill! You guys had no fear with Atticus and knew her inside out. You cut fiberglass, made your own covers and felt unrestricted in what you could do with her for repairs and mods. Looking at Jordan at the nav station and commenting about making a backrest, I started to think about the difficulty of making mods that will be consistent with the "new" feel of this boat. I look forward to your next review and that you find the perfect Atticus II.

As a new dad with a wild mustang 2 year old girl and a 12 year old boy. Space for kids is more then just a sleeping cubby. Once she started walking, man she was off! I get the price point considerations, maybe consider bigger, the kids will need it. I think Zatara is a good example of kids needing room. Super excited for ya'll! Can't wait to see what you do. :)

What a beautiful craft, and someone is going to buy this treasure, but it's not for you. That's what makes your review top notch -- you have your criteria and you don't hesitate to point out why this PS37 doesn't meet your needs. Great review of the Crealock 37. The storage space is actually pretty incredible, but not easily accessed. However, you're right, it's too small for a couple with kids. I looked at a PSC37 and PSC34 and ended up buying the 34. There isn't a lot more room on the 37 and the layout is similar. Fantastic boat for a couple, but that's about it. The cockpit is small so that if you get pooped, the water can clear quickly. I disagree with your expert about the canoe stern, it is great with following seas. Even though the cockpit is rather tight, you can still lay down full length on the seat. She sails great. I've had mine for 5 years now and I love her. I hope that you can see a PSC 40, I think that would be the perfect size if you can swing the extra price. Another boat that I looked at that I almost wish I had gotten was a Tartan 40, they are nice, but not as sea kindly.

All you need is small kids in that aft port berth pushing all the buttons on the circuit breakers when they are bored ... no thank you! Nice layout for a couple and maybe a friend or two. Beautiful condition inside for sure! Very cozy V berth. Gorgeous boat! Thanks for sharing!

Cape Horn to Starboard or Sailing a Serious Ocean, but my personal favorite is Sailing to the Edge of Time. I'm glad you guys are going to pass on that boat. In fact, the oldest was as tall as i am at 14. Ok, they said for the next 10 years. May aswell go with adult size then. You are going to need that.

Our parents took 4 kids - ages 7 to 16 - sailing for a year from Lake Ontario to the Bahamas in 1977/78 on an Atlantic Clipper 41 (Yankee Clipper 41). Have fun on your boat tour! ⛵

A gorgeous boat that a family of four could do day sails or even a trip for a few weeks but as a full time live aboard for four people, they would drive themselves crazy running into to each other all the time. So it’s definitely time to see something else and I think that’s one of the things you learned with Atticus, don’t jump at the first opportunity, see more of what is available before you decide on which one you’re going to decide on.

Firstly, excellent piece; great editing and concise review for your parameters. Secondly, I own a 37 and as you experienced and many have stated, she's a bit tight down below for a 37 foot boat. I don't see raising a family aboard. She izz however wicked fun to sail and I have been blown away with how well she handles heavy weather. I look forward to seeing the other boats y'all review. Just viewed a Tayana Vancouver 42, 1991 with new rigging 2018 and a 61hp Yanmar diesel that was well maintained, as was the whole boat. It sold for AU$103,000 in Sydney, NSW. An absolute dream. Especially suited to family cruising. Even had a small bath for kids! It had two cabins. The main was quite roomy for two. The other was okay for two kids. But the headroom throughout most of the boat was excellent. The spacious cockpit had very wide benches which obviously were designed to walk on as well. Galley was spacious with excellent storage. The Nav space was well appointed from an instrument perspective. This boat looked hard to beat, Especially as value for money.

Our C&C 38-3 (similar cabin layout as the Crealok) is perfect for us to spend summers on with occasional guests. Would definitely be tight for 4 full time. Great video. I like the unique ranking scheme aspect and the good use of sailboat data to introduce common performance measures. Very clever and well-done with the graphics. In the vlog genre where KZbinrs just tour and rate boats I've not seen them go to that much effort. It'd be nice to see a category for how well-equiped the boats are for long-term cruising. You discuss it in the video, but it'd be nice to see the metric for the look back once you've toured all the boats. The Seacraft is in amazing shape, but it just feels tiny. It reminded me of how the Seawind is small inside for a 30-footer. Looking forward to seeing some of the larger boats and hopefully they're in good shape even if not as near perfect.

That is a beautiful example of a Seacraft 37 but John K nailed it when he said it is a SMALL 37 foot boat (more like a 34 foot boat without a canoe stern). I hope you keep looking for a larger design; I think you will be happier with a bigger boat.

I did a 1500 nm sail on a Hans Christian 40 about a decade ago (3 full sized adult males). Very nice boat with fin keel and it performed admirably for a mono. It had a wheel with round stern and the gripe I had is when fishing on passage, it's hard to land and clean the fish. It was a beauty of a boat and with every fish, the owner went nuts cleaning the cockpit. For big passages, this is a consideration. A swim step might be nice, or slightly open transom.

Hey guys! We have a Crealock 37 hull #15 of 16 built. The first Pacific Seacraft! Whether or not she’s big enough for a family I wouldn’t say, we decided not to have kids, but the PS is one of the best designs and builds for ocean passages ever built. Super comfortable in a seaway!! They don’t beat ya to death and fatigue the crew. They sail like a dream, have tons of storage and are pretty fast. Ours is a cutter rigged yawl with a tiller. The tiller of course folds up out of the way when laying on the hook, the pedestal of course is big and always there! I know you might be tired of a tiller but if you have a kid you might really want that extra room in the cockpit!! Hope this helped!! 🤙🏽😊 Peace Curtis

I grew up sailing on a Newport 30 MK1. My parents and two sisters. Five people living out of that boat for two weeks at a time. I had the quarter birth and loved the semi-private space of that bunk. It really never felt that cramped to me as a kid. I'm sure my parents felt differently.

I have a Pacific Seacraft 37' and absolutely love it. With that said I sail solo 80% of the time and agree with your assessment of livability... It is made for two folks that prefer performance, balance, safety and durability over storage and interior volume. I don't necessarily agree with your broker's take that a higher price point means you are able to step into better upwind performance as the PSCs perform exceptionally well to weather. I'm sure you are familiar with Millenial Falcon's channel, they sail a Tayana 42 and have spent most of their time repairing vs sailing, but it's got way more space than the PSC 37.

I’m sure you’re a few weeks ahead of this video, but have you looked at a Gulfstar 50? (1978 and above) I have one, & we love it! If you can find one in good shape, they are tanks as far as build quality and below deck room. Their keel/skeg/rudder design is exactly what you mentioned you’re looking for. Excellent review guys. Very professional and interesting. I’m looking forward to more. My wife and I live aboard our 2012 Hallberg-Rassy 64 which we consider a perfect blue water cruiser. She’s just going through a full refit at Berthon in Lymington, UK after a four year post retirement circumnavigation with various children and grandchildren as crew. We’re back in Maine during the refit but hope to bring her west in May. We can sail her easily as a couple but appreciate the larger family crew on long passages. Best of luck in your search!

Have you thought about an Alubat OVNI? These are true Bluewater boats; aluminium hull, with lifting centreboard and rudder to get into shallow bays and river estuaries. They are also incredibly tough boats. Many of the larger versions will be fitted out for long distance, offshore cruising, because thats what they are for. They all have large capacity fuel and water tanks and many will have water makers, solar panels and wind generators. Some owners fit wind vanes. They will be a lot more expensive than a production yacht of equivalent age and size, but probably in a similar range to a well kept Najad or Halberg Rassy. When we were looking for our current boat, an OVNI 365 (its actually 40’) we also looked at a Najad 37, which is on your shopping list. Beautiful boat and fantastic quality of workmanship. You won’t go wrong with one of those, although I would suggest they are a bit on the small size for a family of four. But we have never regretted our choice. The OVNI is certainly not as beautiful as the Najad, but it’s built like a tank and is a great sea boat. We have been out in some pretty challenging conditions and have always felt safe. That’s really what you want in an offshore boat. I have enjoyed following your adventures and do hope that you find the right boat, whatever it may be. Good luck with the search.

One of the best blue water boats ever built. The 40 would address the space concerns, but at a significantly higher price. You will love the Vancouver 42, it will feel almost twice as big.

Been watching your channel for years. Never knew you are 6’4” tall. I’m 6’5” and had a hard time finding a boat in which I could stand. Downeaster 38. 6’7” standing headroom. They make a 41 and a 45. Looks like a Gozzard. Clipper bow, wineglass transom. Built in early 80s. Very affordable.

Looking for a new boat is so much fun...and frustration...and compromises. But I can't really see you getting away with a boat under 40-42 feet. In my experience it's better to go a little larger right away then to have that nagging feeling once the "yeay we got a new boat" feeling fades. -And especially since you have a 10 year horizon with this new boat.
