Have you already considered a Island packet? Really good liveability and comfort ,that is even more important than fast sailing. Your ‘children to be´ will feel safe and that way develop pleasure in sailing. When you’re heeling a lot ,it’s not real fun for small children. Good luck with searching !

The forward 'sail locker' looked to me to be a perfect cot / berth for a small child! You could even sleep on the pullman berth to be close but slightly separate when they are little. As a kid I would have loved that as a cosy little hiding space, right up the end of the boat. :)

That was my first thought as well. Kids are really small for the first four years and don’t require that much space.

I totally agree, that way they would have three sleeping areas, one for themselves & 1 each for their future 2 kids they want to have. Besides, they could put the kids on the shorter side of the table where they sat in the video & sit on the other side which is longer & more spacious. Seems to me like there's plenty of room to sit a family of four around the table 😀

The only downside to this is having the kids in there sleeping while under way in bumpy seas. Having been a kid in the front birth on many a bumpy ride, it was not a comfortable sleep. Especially as the bow is the most turbulent place while under way, not great if you're feeling queasy. Would occasionally wake up mid-air after a particularly large wave.

One of my favorite elements of your channel is the large amount of diving and snorkeling footage of untouched reefs you post. My wife and I spend hours snorkeling off shore when we head south. Our best experiences are from the 3 to 5 hour snorkeling excursions that we’ll do. Patience and just slowly floating and searching has brought countless finds and experiences. Love seeing the pristine reefs through your lense. No one does it better, and believe me I search every winter. Thanks🙂

*Slow chant* atticus II, Atticus II, ATTICUS II... You guys were right with your comments about the Valiant on the kickstarter thread. Valiant has an amazing floor plan. The aft cabin and bathroom alone are perfect. The mechanical room is great for a boat this size. Even the canoe stern cockpit is reasonably sized. The Pullman layout is a bit of a sacrifice for sleeping and eating area, but the storage space could be worth the trade-off especially for baby supplies and equipment. You will be astounded how much room baby stuff takes up. Might even fit a little washer/dryer combo (so much baby laundry). Happy to see you find a great boat in your budget. Can't wait to see the travels in Atticus II. Good luck with checking out the v-berth layout and locking one down if that's the better fit.

This one is really interesting. With a second furling front sail, and potentially a spinnaker in a sleeve, you may not need to put sails in the Pullman's front "room" at all and it actually could be a separate baby/toddler sleeping room. While they are still small, it could sleep two. And the berth next to it could be play space. Smaller dinner table space? Kids growing up in the boat will not know differently and feel at home anyway because that's the feeling that comes from you, not the sailing estate.

This is the best answer. I wouldn't want to live on any boat with 2 kids but could with one. This boat ticks that box for 2 kids. Especially if they are planning on sailing for 10 years. I think their thoughts are until the kids get early school aged. I would have loved doing this with my son and wife during his young years.

I couldn't agree more with you JPdJ. With another furling headsail and sheathed spinnaker, there is really no need for a sail locker. What an ideal place then, for a sleeping place for a new family member.

I own a lovely Perry Tayana 37, the Valiant is a wonderful choice and I’m happy for you! I have a photo of a 40 that broke free from its mooring during a Winter storm in Puget Sound. It washed onto rocks in West Seattle and was pounded hard for over 24 hours before salvage could arrive. It suffered without hull water intrusion, only very little damage to the rudder. You will love the sailing performance and many other fine characteristics of this boat.

Hi guys, I think this one is the boat for you. The different sleeping areas allow for a growing family. Everything else is there to make a it a safe boat. Nice wood interior. Lots of character. I fully agree with Rachel Pooley below: the sail locker would be just the thing a little kid would crawl into.

Ohlalala Desiree and Jordan, wahou I am so happy for you guys that this one might be THE one. Can’t wait for your trip next week to test out the boat and the other configuration. I have 2 kids and I definitely see myself on this boat. Plus, the cabin at the front, with the removable window is just perfect wen you have a little baby (changing station and nap area)! Also, you might want to add a net on the guardrail to prevent little onces from falling, and this will be super easy, thanks to the wholes in the aluminum piece. Oh and what a great kitchen!!!! G'day Desiree & Jordan, of all the boats you've looked at, the Valiant 42' is the best bluewater, open ocean cruiser mate (Buds :) They're built like a bloody tank, solid ~ but sail like a true performance cruiser mate. I wish it was the V-Birth Model instead of the Pullman, but regardless, they're both AMAZING CRUISERS. The craftsmanship is absolutely impeccable. I'm personally not a fan of the doublev-ended profile, just my preference mate. The interior layout can be a wee bit congested,, but nothing you can't figure out. Beautiful woodwork and joinery. The hull design has definitely been put to the test in the most radical offshore conditions and has passed amazingly well. Plus, the Valiant 42's hold their value extremely well. You guys should totally speak to friends with 8yr old and younger kids. I think you’re viewing the boats through the lens of young adults not kids. For example this 42 forward space would be ideal for a kid until 2/3 yrs and super safe. Also the table in saloon would be fine for a young family. This boat shopping journey is great. Yes, those Valiant 42's are superlative boats. Broker Bernie Jackits is an interesting person himself, having over 100,000 miles at sea and owning many boats, from a 28' Bristol cutter to a Hallberg Rassey 53. You could spend many evenings with him and never run out of sea stories. He currently owns a Valiant 42 so knows them really well. He helped us find our boat last December and was awesome to work with.

Hey, buddies. i am 55 yrs old very active sailor with a 1984 Santana 23. My time of being a young father showed me that kids up to age of 10 or 12, normally adapt to sailing mood very easily. Everything is an adventure and Discovery for them and for the parents too. 18000miles of south Caribbean cruising and two Caribbean expeditions from Venezuela to Antigua, allowed me to enjoy those times with no worries about their comfort and possibilities. Of course we were not living on board, but it is just a little insigh.. a 42ft robust boat like this will me more than appropiate platform for sailing family of 4, but also can tell you an 53 ft Amel Mango or Maramú can be found in a similar price range over tje Caribbean and Venezuela, and that is a struddy ocean going sailboat with tons of space. Of course we are talking about 30 to 40 yrs old boats.

Valiant 42 seems like the perfect boat. The forward storage on the boat you looked at would be perfect for storing all the parts, tools, and extra clothes. Having all that storage, especially with four on board would be ideal.

If you are still looking, try an FD12 50ft sloop. I had one and believe it fits most of your criteria except it is big enough to take guests or crew too. We sailed from the States to NZ in ours over 5 yrs. Wonderful adventure.

With a 4 and a 6 year old you would sit them on the Port side. and you two would be on the Starboard side. Also with a new high output alternator you might be able to get rid of the generator and have some extra storage or equipment space. With the open port on the pullman berth you need to remember that the boat is still usually going to point into the wind so you can sew or have sewn a funnel that fits around the port and points forward that would bring air into the pullman and it would flow out into the salon. Valiant is a good boat. It is sturdy. In it's day it was a performance cruiser. Today it is a bullet proof passage maker.

Lovely. Maybe create an opening from the pullman to the "sail locker" like the one from the quarter berth. That might help with ventilation from the forehatch. I agree with the suggestion about the sail locker as a child's cabin. When they get to ages 4 and 6 our feeling is no saloon will be big enough when they get stir crazy. Being able to spread out to separate spaces (enclosed cockpit, qtr berth, nav station, saloon, pullman, forecabin) is going to be more useful.

A good workout space was what I was thinking 20 seconds before you said it. This type of space is a big concern for me. It looks like most boats don’t have this type of space. As I’m at the beginning of old age it’s seems to be way easier to “grow” even without doing anything “wrong”. I definitely need a good workout space I can use on a regular basis to avoid growing. It’s a major concern for sure for me also because I think I would go little nuts without being able to get a good workout in on a regular basis. It seems to clean clear and reset what ever needs be. Plus it just feels so darn good to get a good sweat in.

I really appreciate these boat tours/reviews that you guys are doing. You think of so many things that I wouldn't otherwise consider. Also, Jordan and I are about the same size, so it's very useful to see how he fits in some of the typically tight boat-spaces. There is no such thing as the perfect boat, but I think this one suits you better than any you've looked at so far.

A pretty good looking boat for sure. I love the deck space, hand holds and the enclosed cockpit. I can see sleeping out on the top deck with a tent like structure to keep the sun and rain off. That pullman berth has a lot of nice storage up front not only for sails but also stuff for the boat and kids. Small kids don't need much space either. For the reefing up on the mainsail set up some D rings so you can clamp into the boom or mast with your harness like your friends Dan & Kika have on Sailing Uma. If you can't find a Najad 440 then this would be a pretty ideal boat. Thanks for sharing!

YES hard attach points on the mast free up both hands for reefing - long tether for jackline, short tether for mast. If you need to reef then you need a harness.

I personally am delighted with this boat. In my opinion it seems to meet most of the conditions. Right from the first sight it looks well built, solid, practical and on top with a very elegant line. I'm sure Jordan already has the skills to adapt to their style of being, the few inconveniences he's discovered. Yes, I fell in love with this boat and I would be very happy for you if you could buy it. From my point of view, there would be just a "small" problem that needs to be solved: the price, but I like to believe that in the end your dream will come true. I think you should consider a Nauticat 43 or 40. Not the full keel boats some are familiar with, but the Sparkman and Stephens type - fin keel and skeg hung rudder. Good sailboats, very well made, strong and safe off shore. As an owner of one, and a parent, I can tell you that having a full size queen bed, your own head with a shower plus private space for the kids with their own head is a huge bonus. I think you’d find them spacious and comfortable for family as well as an excellent offshore boat. Big interior spaces and options for everyone in a family.

Back in the early 80s I met a couple who had sailed their Valiant to Bermuda & spent a winter here. They did quite a bit more than the usual stop off in St Georges. Seem to recall that theirs had a centerboard so they could get around into shallower anchorages. Beautiful boat, extremely well equipped for blue water sailing. I do recall them having hull blistering issues. A long time ago. Don't know what became of them or the boat.

First ever V42 galley review that didn't even highlight the amazing pantry - one of the best features - I hope you found a V42 CE Queen to buy. 2 years ago there was a good selection on the market, they all got bought up, leaving only a few with tradeoffs - like no arch, enclosure, vane for example. I really want to see you out on one of these. Can't wait to see you testing out your friend's boat and seeing your reaction to the layout and the way these sail.

Love it. I love a canoe stern, there looked like ample room to work on the engine but let’s not start having to fix things. My favorite boat was a Hans Christian . I fell in love with the lines an the almost plumb bow. I owned a Malabar jr. it was just right for me and my sons as my wife would not go out with us. No blue water cruising. the other cool thing about the CE Queen layout is that the port salon seat extends (sliding insert) inboard to the folded down table tower to form a wider berth. The table acts as a lea cloth - I know since I slept there on a 10 day 170 mile per day crazy 100% port beam reach sail to the Caribe from Newport :-)

Of all the boats you've looked at, I like the layout the best. It oozes quality. Love the woodwork down below. I like the teak & holly on the sole. The Gulf Star Yachts I used to build all had that. Plus the fact that all woodwork is below, not on deck...minimal maintenance. Foredeck space for dinghy and yoga...I guess you'll have to take turns. lol The narrower beam may also allow the boat better windward performance, and the beamy aft section will likely give it more stability downwind. Listen to your broker!! :-) Look at the V-berth layout...it just may be Atticus II.

My father and a close friend in 1974 Took the plans to a valiant 40 To Taiwan And bilt the Polaris 42.Sunflower and Radora were the first 2 boats made. Both have been around the world many times.

I looked at boats for over a year and did a lot of research. As soon as I got on a Valiant 42 the angels finally sang. Everything I opened, inspected, explored, observed my reactions was "wow". The factory tags every wire and pipe so you know where it gores and what it does. The interior is solid cherry furniture. The floors you saw. No shortcuts on hardware spec, everything oversized. Everything accessible. Best stainless steel welding work I've seen on any boat. Beefy backing plates on every fitting. The list goes on. My point? Imagine the Texas crew knew nothing about boat building but had the perry specs. Imagine they were told "do your best and comply to standards (e.g. ABYC) and build something to be proud of, and something you'd put your family in". this is the result.

This one is my favorite one so far, but I think the other lay-out will be better for you. Kitchen is spacious, for storage and foot prep. Separate shower is awesome. I agree with having the head closer to the stairs is nicer. Looking forward to next week's review.

I’ve commented before and believe you will definitely end up with a Valiant. We owned a 1992 V 40 hull #295 (pullman version) that we took to Mexico for a year with our 2 year old daughter that we loved. We also owned a 1998 V 39 hull # 7 that was a wonderful boat and now own a 1982 V 47 that we have restored over the past 4 years. For what you are looking for you cannot go wrong with a 42 and I think you might be happiest with the forward V berth version.

Oh the suspense. Can't wait until next week now. That is one sweet boat. It's not overstated but has some great features. Love the Nav station. The kitchen is awesome and yeah that window at the stairs to the bed, perfect! I can see you making some changes to her to fit your style and with your knowledge and no how you will make it work. Getting excited to see the big purchase. And I love this series. The graphics are great and they flow nice. You guys have done a great job. Video and editing quality are way up.

I suspect that this is the boat for you guys, am I guessing, that you have made an offer. Jordan, I have the opposite problem that you have, I am less than 5'7" and I can tell you, on my current boat, I can just barely get the sail cover on. This is an excellent boat. Another boat to keep an eye out for is the Baba 40. Phenomenal boat and designed by Bob Perry.

Yup, this feels like the right boat to me! The storage in the v-birth could easily be reconfigured for little kibblers and they would be nice and close. Agree solar array should be upgraded and remove the generator. Good luck in your decision. We really liked this one.

OK, about the midship cleats. First you said loved them, then dissist them about the toe kicking. So, you have ALL-STAR seamstress that could make covers with padding to put over them while underway, like you do winch covers while at anchor.😁😁😁 just my humble little opinion.

I love this series of searching for a new boat. I look forward to seeing what boat we’re going to get to tour the next week. I do like the boats that have had the possibility for the children later to have separate rooms. I had to share growing up and I hated it. My sister always put her cold feet on me🤪. I do hope you will go back to the ending that you used to use on your other videos were you push her into the water. I love that ending to your videos. It’s the best out there!!
